    Experiences from IYS 2020, public engagement and awareness activities in Turkey

    The year 2020, which has been designated as the International Year of Sound with the intention of celebrating and promoting the importance of sound for science and society was ironically started as a silent and isolated year with the global COVID-19 pandemic. However, these unprecedented times and activities around the world, which explored the interaction between sound, technology and the society, presented sound experiences for humanity and the ecosystem that they have never had the opportunity to experience before. This study reports on the activities of Turkish Acoustical Society during these times and aims to draw attention to the benefits, challenges, and opportunities of the instruments for widening participation and spreading knowledge relating to sound. The main activities were public opinion survey on noise annoyance in dwellings before and during the pandemic, Turkish Glossary of Acoustic Terms, IYS Drawing and Composition Competition in Turkish schools and various seminars, interviews, podcast on social media channels. Our experience and findings suggest that designing and implementing activities that actively includes researchers, teachers, students and ordinary people may help increase public engagement behaviorally, emotionally, and cognitively, there by positively affecting awareness in sound related subjects.

    EMDR Flash technique in adolescents with depression: a twelve-week follow-up study

    This study aims to investigate the specific effects of the EMDR Flash Technique on adolescents with depression. This follow-up study consists of 32 adolescents, 12-17 years of age (M = 14.34, SD = 1.56), including 7 males and 25 females. They were evaluated with Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children Present, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Children Revised Impact of Event Scale-8 (Cries-8). These were administered at baseline, at the end of the 4th and 12th weeks of treatment. The EMDR Flash Technique which can be utilized in the preparation phase of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to reduce the intensity of highly distressing memories rapidly and relatively painlessly was applied for 12 weeks, one session per week as a free-standing intervention. Also, the EMDR Flash Technique can be effective in decreasing the rate of noncompliance and drop-outs of adolescents. The baseline means of total BDI scores decreased from 48.19 to 2.16 at the end of the 12th week of treatment. Also, the CRIES scores decreased from 31.78 to 0.44 at the end of the 12th week of treatment. In addition, the baseline means of SUD scores decreased from 9.53 to zero at the end of the 12th week of treatment. Overall, our results underscore the effectiveness of the EMDR-Flash Technique in adolescents with depression. Depression is a significant mental health concern for adolescents due to its early onset and chronic nature. Depression can be observed in conjunction with PTSD, and sometimes, depressive symptoms may transform into traumatic experiences. EMDR is an 8-stage protocol that includes history taking, preparation, assessment, desensitization, installation, body scan, closure, and reevaluation, used to alleviate the effects of traumatic experiences. It is hypothesized that unpleasant and traumatic events are stored in a dysfunctional way, and it promotes an adaptive processing and resolution of the traumatic experience. The goal of EMDR is to achieve an adequate processing of negative experiences and to create new adaptive information. The EMDR Flash Technique (FT) is utilized in the preparation phase of EMDR to reduce the intensity of highly distressing memories rapidly and relatively painlessly. Although a few studies have shown that the FT is effective in adults, there is only one study to investigate the effectiveness of the FT in children and adolescents. This research, in determining the efficacy of the EMDR FT on adolescents with depression, particularly focused on depression symptoms and assessed the observed changes in these symptoms. It aims to evaluate the specific effects of EMDR-FT on adolescents with depression, providing a unique perspective compared to previous research that has mainly focused on broader mental health disorder indicators. It is hypothesized that EMDR-FT is an effective therapy for treating adolescents with Depression. In the present study, adolescents with depression showed significant improvements in symptom severity and their traumatic events impact levels decreased. As a result of our study, a 12-week EMDR-FT treatment was observed to be effective for adolescents with depression and in reducing and improving traumatic stress levels and depression. Our results underscore the effectiveness of the EMDR-FT in adolescents with depression.

    Assessing the mediating relationships between psychological factors in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and cognitive disengagement syndrome

    This study aims to investigate the predictive and mediating relationships between emotion dysregulation, internalizing disorders, family functionality, loneliness preference, and executive functions (EF) in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and cognitive disengagement syndrome (ADHD + CDS). This study included 176 children and adolescents (92 boys, 84 girls) who were diagnosed with ADHD + CDS according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the Fifth Edition criteria by a fellowship-trained child and adolescent psychiatrist, between ages 8 -12 (M = 10, SD = 1.52) with a convenience sampling method. The solitude scale for children, difficulties in emotion dysregulation scale, Child Behavior Checklist, Barkley Sluggish Cognitive Tempo Scale, Family assessment device, and CNS Vital Signs test were used. The results showed that difficulty in emotion regulation, preference for loneliness, internalizing disorders and CDS symptom severity did not have a mediating effect between family functionality and EF. Still, emotion dysregulation mediates the relationship between EF and internalizing disorders by itself and through loneliness preference. Also, preference for loneliness and emotion dysregulation had a mediating effect between family functionality and internalizing disorders. Finally, it was found that the effect of emotion regulation difficulty, loneliness preference, and internalizing disorders had a mediating role between CDS symptom severity and family functionality. In conclusion, the information obtained from this study on the etiology of CDS may guide future studies.

    Implementing lightweight, dynamic hierarchical key assignment scheme for cloud computing

    In this paper, we propose the implementation and adaptation of a hierarchical key assignment scheme (HKAS) previously developed in our research to improve access control in cloud computing environments. The secret keys generated and managed by this scheme can be utilized for various purposes within the cloud computing, including data encryption, integrity checks, secure communications, and accessing critical infrastructures or services. Our implementation performs dynamic update operations with minimal computational cost and storage demands, as users within the hierarchical structure do not store any key components. Through security analysis, the scheme demonstrates strong key indistinguishability security (S-KI-security), effectively safeguarding keys against various cryptographic attacks. The scheme's flexibility allows it to be tailored to specific organizational needs, whether for securing sensitive data, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, or facilitating secure data sharing and collaboration in cloud environments. Thus, we advocate for the practical implementation of the HKAS in transitioning to cloud environments.

    Paradox of optimism: opposition coordination against autocratic incumbents in Turkey’s 2019 and 2023 elections

    In the 2019 local and 2023 general elections, Turkey’s opposition parties joined forces in pursuit of a common objective: to oust autocratic incumbents and democratize the political system. While they achieved noteworthy successes in 2019, replicating these gains in the 2023 presidential and parliamentary elections proved elusive. This study reveals that coordinating opposition efforts becomes more challenging during general elections, particularly when a charismatic presidential candidate, capable of fostering synergy among opposition factions and voters, is absent. Additionally, when opposition parties span the ideological spec-trum, crafting a unified campaign around a shared manifesto becomes more intricate. The resulting atmosphere of uncertainty is exacerbated further in the absence of decisive leadership. Most importantly, the research highlights a paradox: as optimism for electoral victory grows, parties become more inclined to form alliances but less willing to nominate a strong leader, due to con-cerns about power-sharing overshadowing electoral success. This paradox diminishes the chances of opposition victory.

    How do human resources practices affect the performance of the employees in Syria? International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)

    The purpose of this research is to analyses how HRM practices affect worker output in a high-pressure setting like the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Syria. It contributes to literature by expanding the understanding of HRM. It provides useful insights and ideas for improving the efficiency of HRM procedures in businesses. This study highlighted the need for the ICRC to prioritize and invest in strong human resource management practices. Primary data was collected from ICRC employees through survey questionnaire. Findings show that HRM practices have a significant direct impact on the motivation and performance of ICRC employees. Meanwhile, psychological safety mediates the relationship between employee's motivation and employee's performance. On the other hand, employee's motivation partially mediates the relationship between HR Practices and employee's performance at ICRC.

    Annelerin psikolojik dayanıklılığının ve duygu sosyalleştirme stratejilerinin çocukların duygu düzenleme becerileri üzerindeki rolü

    Amaç: Bu araştırma, 48-72 aylık çocuklara sahip annelerin psikolojik dayanıklılık puanları ile duygu sosyalleştirme stratejileri puanlarının, bazı sosyodemografik değişkenler kontrol edikten sonra çocuklarının duygu düzenleme becerileri üzerindeki yordayıcı rolünü incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Kartopu ve kolayda örnekleme yöntemi ile ulaşılan, 48-72 aylık çocuğu olan 659 anne ile yapılan araştırmada veriler, Sosyodemografik Bilgi Formu, Duygu Düzenleme Ölçeği, Çocukların Olumsuz Duygularıyla Başa Çıkma Ölçeği ve Erişkin Yılmazlık Ölçeği aracılığıyla gönüllülük esasına göre çevrimiçi olarak toplanmıştır. Bu araştırma ilişkisel tarama modeline dayanan kesitsel bir çalışmadır. Bulgular: Analiz sonuçlarına göre, annelerin psikolojik dayanıklılık puanları çocukların duygu düzenleme becerilerini pozitif yönde anlamlı düzeyde (?=0,279; p<0,01); annelerin destekleyici duygu sosyalleştirme stratejileri puanları çocukların duygu düzenleme becerilerini pozitif yönde anlamlı düzeyde (?=0,220; p<0,01); annelerin destekleyici olmayan duygu sosyalleştirme stratejileri puanları çocukların duygu düzenleme becerilerini negatif yönde anlamlı düzeyde (?=-0,260; p<0,01) yordamaktadır. Çoklu doğrusal regresyon analizi sonuçlarında ise çocuk cinsiyeti ve ailedeki çocuk sayısı sosyodemografik değişkenleri kontrol edildikten sonra, annenin psikolojik dayanıklılığı, destekleyici ve destekleyici olmayan duygu sosyalleştirme stratejileri puanlarının, duygu düzenleme puanlarının anlamlı yordayıcıları olduğu bulunmuştur (p<0,01). Sonuç: Bu bulgular annenin psikolojik dayanıklılığının ve annelerin kullandıkları duygu sosyalleştirme stratejilerinin çocuğun duygusal gelişimi üzerindeki önemini göstermektedir. Dolayısıyla çocukların duygu düzenleme becerilerini geliştirmeye yönelik terapötik müdahale ve programlara annelerin de dahil edilmesinin terapi verimliliğini artırabileceği düşünülmektedir. Aynı zamanda araştırma bulgularının, ebeveynin psikolojik dayanıklılığı ve duygu sosyalleştirme stratejileri ile duygu düzenleme becerileri arasındaki ilişkiyi ortaya koyarak literatüre ışık tutacağına inanılmaktadır.

    Imaging of rough surfaces by RTM method

    An electromagnetic imaging framework is implemented utilizing a single frequency reverse time migration (RTM) technique to accurately reconstruct inaccessible two-dimensional (2D) rough surface profiles from the knowledge of scattered field data. The unknown surface profile, which is expressed as a 1D height function, is either perfectly electric conducting (PEC) or an interface between two penetrable media. For both cases, it is assumed that the surface is illuminated by a number of line sources located in the upper medium. The scattered fields, which should be collected by real measurements in practical applications, are obtained synthetically by solving the associated direct scattering problem through the surface integral equations. RTM is subsequently applied to generate a cross-correlation imaging functional which is evaluated numerically and provides a 2D image of the region of interest. A high correlation is observed by the functional in the regions where the transitions between two media occur. Hence, it results in the acquisition of the unknown surface profile at the sites where the functional attains its highest values. The efficiency of the proposed method is comprehensively tested by numerical examples covering various types of scattering scenarios.

    Microservices-based databank for Turkish hazelnut cultivars using IoT and semantic web technologies

    Information and communication technologies (ICTs) can play a crucial role in facilitating access to comprehensive information on the quality standards of Turkish hazelnut cultivars. In this regard, this study introduces a Hazelnut Databank System (HDS) that utilizes the microservices architecture, an integrated software system supported by the Internet of Things (IoT) and semantic web, to categorize Turkish hazelnut cultivars. The study focuses on developing microservices using various programming languages and frameworks. Specifically, C# on the.NET Core Framework was used for both microservices and the web-based application implemented through the ASP.NET Core MVC Framework. Mobile-based software applications were created using Xamarin. Forms, and the IoT application was developed using the Python programming language. The data storage is facilitated through the MS SQL Server database. Additionally, the study incorporates the implementation of a hazelnut species classification system using the DNN + ResNet50 machine learning model, achieving an impressive accuracy rate of 95.77%. The overall usability of the system was evaluated, resulting in a score of 42 out of 50. By providing detailed information on Turkish hazelnut cultivars, the HDS has the potential to greatly improve hazelnut production quality in Turkey and increase awareness of hazelnut agriculture among relevant stakeholders.

    The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on online grocery supply chain management: a case study in Istanbul

    The COVID-19 pandemic has already crippled normal life all over the world. Its negative impact not only changed the human health system tragically but also disrupted the global economic system. One negative result was ended up in the global food supply chain. As the lockdown times have suspended the manufacturing and logistic activities, therefore, the customers have experienced unimaginable chaos in the shopping markets. Moreover, the purchasing habit of the consumers has remarkably changed compared to pre-pandemic. To meet this new demand pattern, many grocery retailers have tried to adapt to the new normal. While before COVID-19 offline grocery purchasing was popular, after the pandemic, online service got tremendous attention in market. In this study, online grocery supply chain management during the COVID-19 in Istanbul is considered. The aim is to find out how online grocery companies will serve more efficiently during the pandemics and which factors have more effect on the customer’s satisfaction. To do so, first, three popular grocery retailers in Istanbul were selected. Then, a related survey was designed to understand the consumer experience as doing online grocery shopping in COVID-19. Unsurprisingly, a result shows that 60% of the respondents did online shopping every 3-4 days in one week, and the delivery time is the most important factor for the customers. Then, the SWOT analyses were performed accordingly, and the related strategies were summarized. Finally, several managerial implications were given to may improve the company’s online services in COVID-19 and post COVID-19 in Turkey.

    Impact of climate change and land cover dynamics on nitrate transport to surface waters

    The study investigated the impact of climate and land cover change on water quality. The novel contribution of the study was to investigate the individual and combined impacts of climate and land cover change on water quality with high spatial and temporal resolution in a basin in Turkey. The global circulation model MPI-ESM-MR was dynamically downscaled to 10-km resolution under the RCP8.5 emission scenario. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to model stream flow and nitrate loads. The land cover model outputs that were produced by the Land Change Modeler (LCM) were used for these simulation studies. Results revealed that decreasing precipitation intensity driven by climate change could significantly reduce nitrate transport to surface waters. In the 2075–2100 period, nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) loads transported to surface water decreased by more than 75%. Furthermore, the transition predominantly from forestry to pastoral farming systems increased loads by about 6%. The study results indicated that fine-resolution land use and climate data lead to better model performance. Environmental managers can also benefit greatly from the LCM-based forecast of land use changes and the SWAT model’s attribution of changes in water quality to land use changes.     Leveraging transformer-based language models for enhanced service insight in tourism

    Customer feedback is a valuable resource for enhancing customer experience and identifying areas that require improvement. Utilizing user insights allows a tourism company to identify and address problematic points in its service delivery, provide feedback to partner companies regarding their product offerings, and even reconsider agreements by incorporating these opinions when curating their product portfolio. Setur implemented a systematic approach to collecting customer feedback by distributing "after-stay surveys'' to its customers via email following the completion of the agency services provided. Guest answers to open-ended questions that gather opinions about travel experience are analyzed by four tasks: user intention for answering, the sentiment of the review, subjects touched upon, and whom it concerned. For these tasks, transformer-based natural language processing (NLP) models BERT, DistilBERT, RoBERTa, and Electra are fine-Tuned to classify customer reviews. Based on the test results, it is observed that best practices could be gathered using Bert. In addition, we showed that different insights can be obtained from text comments made for two hotels in Aydin, Turkiye. Some users made complaints using neutral sentences. In some cases, people gave high scores to the numerical rating questions, but their open-ended questions could have a negative meaning.

    Forecasting and analysis of energy consumption and waste generation in Antalya with SVR

    Antalya, a rapidly expanding coastal city in Türkiye, has experienced significant changes due to urbanization and increasing tourism activities. Comprehending tourism trends is crucial for the city's sustainable development and environmental management. Based on this perspective, this paper aims to present a comprehensive retrospective analysis of Antalya's energy consumption, domestic solid waste generation, wastewater generation, population growth, and tourist numbers over the years. Antalya faces significant challenges due to escalating trends in listed areas. Utilizing the Support Vector Regression, this study projects a need for an additional 1715 GWh of electricity production capacity, an expansion of wastewater capacity by 85639 thousand m3, and an increase in domestic solid waste disposal capacity by 597745 tons by 2028 to accommodate growing demands. We emphasize the importance of adopting effective policies and strategies to support energy efficiency, waste reduction, and wastewater management alongside sustainable urban planning and tourism management for Antalya's long-Term environmental sustainability and development. The findings presented in this study provide valuable insights for policymakers, urban planners, and stakeholders to make informed decisions, ensuring a balanced approach toward economic growth and environmental conservation.

    Application of ChatGPT in the tourism domain: potential structures and challenges

    The tourism industry stands out as a sector where effective customer communication significantly influences sales and customer satisfaction. The recent shift from traditional natural language processing methodologies to state-of-The-Art deep learning and transformer-based models has revolutionized the development of Conversational AI tools. These tools can provide comprehensive information about a company's product portfolio, enhancing customer engagement and decision-making. One potential Conversational AI application can be developed with ChatGPT. In this study, we explore the potential of using ChatGPT, a cutting-edge Conversational AI, in the context of Setur's products and services, focusing on two distinct scenarios: intention recognition and response generation. We incorporate Setur-specific data, including hotel information and annual catalogs. Our research aims to present potential structures and strategies for utilizing Language Model-based systems, particularly ChatGPT, in the tourism domain. We investigate the advantages and disadvantages of three different architectures and evaluate whether a restrictive or more independent model would be suitable for our application. Despite the impressive performance of Large Language Models (LLMs) in generating human-like dialogues, their end-To-end application faces limitations, such as system prompt constraints, fine-Tuning challenges, and model unavailability. Moreover, semantic search fails to deliver satisfactory performance when searching filters that require clear answers. To address these issues, we propose a hybrid approach that employs external interventions, the assignment of different GPT agents according to intent analysis, and traditional methods at specific junctures, which will facilitate the integration of domain knowledge into these systems.

    Resource allocation in the finite blocklength regime under PAoI and delay violation constraints

    URLLC (Ultra-reliable low-latency communication) is one of the more challenging modes for 5G for resource allocation (RA). Most of the previous studies for RA for wireless access in URLLC assumed known packet arrival processes, and focused on maximizing average rates or throughput. The objective of this paper is to present a formulation of allocating resource blocks, modulation and coding rates to multiple short packet machine-type information flows to provide information age and delay violation guarantees. The scenario is motivated by the scheduling of URLLC flows among users served by a common 5G base station. The problem involves the selections of frequency allocation policy and modulation and coding scheme (MCS) under estimated CSI. Moreover, the sensitivity of the information packet size on the choice of modulation and coding parameters as well as the number of resource blocks and the choice of the number of pilot symbols is demonstrated. The results of this formulation are compared with resource allocation algorithms in the literature.

    Engineering four-qubit fuel states for protecting quantum thermalization machine from decoherence

    Decoherence is a major issue in quantum information processing, degrading the performance of tasks or even precluding them. Quantum error-correcting codes, creating decoherence-free subspaces, and the quantum Zeno effect are among the major means for protecting quantum systems from decoherence. Increasing the number of qubits of a quantum system to be utilized in a quantum information task as a resource expands the quantum state space. This creates the opportunity to engineer the quantum state of the system in a way that improves the performance of the task and even to protect the system against decoherence. Here, we consider a quantum thermalization machine and four-qubit atomic states as its resource. Taking into account the realistic conditions such as cavity loss and atomic decoherence due to ambient temperature, we design a quantum state for the atomic resource as a classical mixture of Dicke and W states. We show that using the mixture probability as the control parameter, the negative effects of the inevitable decoherence on the machine performance almost vanish. Our work paves the way for optimizing resource systems consisting of a higher number of atoms.

    Assessing dyslexia with machine learning: a pilot study utilizing Google ML Kit

    In this study, we explore the application of Google ML Kit, a machine learning development kit, for dyslexia detection in the Turkish language. We collected face-tracking data from two groups: 49 dyslexic children and 22 typically developing children. Using Google ML Kit and other machine learning algorithms based on eye-tracking data, we compared their performance in dyslexia detection. Our findings reveal that Google ML Kit achieved the highest accuracy among the tested methods. This study underscores the potential of machine learning-based dyslexia detection and its practicality in academic and clinical settings.

    AnlamVer: Semantic model evaluation dataset for Turkish - word similarity and relatedness

    In this paper, we present AnlamVer, which is a semantic model evaluation dataset for Turkish designed to evaluate word similarity and word relatedness tasks while discriminating those two relations from each other. Our dataset consists of 500 word-pairs annotated by 12 human subjects, and each pair has two distinct scores for similarity and relatedness. Word-pairs are selected to enable the evaluation of distributional semantic models by multiple attributes of words and word-pair relations such as frequency, morphology, concreteness and relation types (e.g., synonymy, antonymy). Our aim is to provide insights to semantic model researchers by evaluating models in multiple attributes. We balance dataset word-pairs by their frequencies to evaluate the robustness of semantic models concerning out-of-vocabulary and rare words problems, which are caused by the rich derivational and inflectional morphology of the Turkish language.

    Sustainability via extended warranty contracts: design for a consumer electronics retailer

    Warranty is one of the most important attributes of any product, from both manufacturer and consumer points of view. Although the retailers connect manufacturers to customers by selling goods, traditionally, they have isolated themselves from warranty-related matters such as customer complaints and maintenance costs. However, recent trends in consumer behavior toward extended warranty contracts have changed this approach. While retailers have started to generate considerable revenue from the sale of these contracts, sustainability is also achieved by longer product life cycles. This study analyzed the failure behavior of different classes of cell phone products and their related costs through a chain of consumer electronics retailer operating in Türkiye. To compete on pricing and customer service, a novel policy was designed for the retailer to honor the contracts in house rather than underwriting to a third party insurer as the industry standard. The maintenance records of 328 previous failures were analyzed to plot a failure model. Failure mode and effects analysis was carried out to identify failure classes and the respective costs for extended warranty design for cell phones. The expected warranty costs for coverage of the third, fourth, and fifth years of operation were determined. The results show that the retailer may achieve the same level of profit by increasing customer satisfaction along with the sustainability of the product through repair actions.

    A review of recent innovations in remote health monitoring

    The development of remote health monitoring systems has focused on enhancing healthcare services’ efficiency and quality, particularly in chronic disease management and elderly care. These systems employ a range of sensors and wearable devices to track patients’ health status and offer real-time feedback to healthcare providers. This facilitates prompt interventions and reduces hospitalization rates. The aim of this study is to explore the latest developments in the realm of remote health monitoring systems. In this paper, we explore a wide range of domains, spanning antenna designs, small implantable antennas, on-body wearable solutions, and adaptable detection and imaging systems. Our research also delves into the methodological approaches used in monitoring systems, including the analysis of channel characteristics, advancements in wireless capsule endoscopy, and insightful investigations into sensing and imaging techniques. These advancements hold the potential to improve the accuracy and efficiency of monitoring, ultimately contributing to enhanced health outcomes for patients.
