Yayın The 110°C Thermoluminescence peak as a probe in bioactivity study of the 58S sol-gel bioactive glass(Trans Tech Publications Ltd, 2011-11-06) Polymeris, George S.; Goudouri, Ourania Menti; Paraskevopoulos, Konstantinos M.; Kitis, GeorgeResults of the present study provide strong indications towards the effective application of the 110°C Thermoluminescence (TL) peak in discriminating between different bioactive responses for the case of the 58S bioactive glass. The in vitro bioactivity of this glass in the form of powder in SBF solution was tested for various immersion times, ranging between 0 and 6 days. This TL peak is ubiquitously present in all 58S samples, for all immersion times. The intensity of the 110°C TL peak was proven to be very sensitive to the different bioactive responses, indicating a strongly decreasing pattern with increasing immersion time in SBF, easily identifying thus the loss of silica. This loss is reflected to the decrease of the 110°C TL peak intensity, which appears to be fast even for the shorter immersion times. The 110°C TL glow peak intensity and sensitization could also be yielding a time scale regarding the beginning of some among the several stages included in the bioactivity sequence.Yayın Component resolved IR bleaching study of the blue LM-OSL signal of various quartz samples(Wind-J Wojewoda Publ Co, 2008-01-01) Polymeris, George S.; Güneç Kıyak, Nafiye; Kitis, GeorgeThe present work provides an initial component resolved analysis concerning the effect of infra-red (IR) exposure at elevated temperatures on the blue LM-OSL signal of quartz (stimulated at 470 nm). The study was performed on a total of seven quartz samples, among which five originated from Turkey, one from Greece and one synthetic quartz sample. For these quartz samples, the presence of 6 or even 7 independent LM-OSL components was previously reported, after the application of a computerized decomposition analysis. IR bleaching of each one of these components is studied and compared to the respective signal reduction due to the same thermal treatment solely. It is clearly demonstrated that IR stimulation at temperatures above 50 degrees C does not deplete only the fast component in most sedimentary quartz samples studied. Net depletion of fast and medium components resulting from IR exposure is sample-dependent and occurs faster as the stimulation temperature increases. Weak IR bleaching of slow components is also reported in some cases, being more effective for stimulation temperatures up to 100 degrees C. No depletion of either the medium or the slow components was detected for stimulation temperatures above 150 degrees C. Finally, IR does not stimulate any of the LM-OSL components in the case of the synthetic quartz sample.Yayın Component resolved OSL dose response and sensitization of various sedimentary quartz samples(Elsevier Ltd, 2007-02) Güneç Kıyak, Nafiye; Polymeris, George S.; Kitis, GeorgeThe structure of the linearly modulated optically stimulated luminescence (LM-OSL) signal was studied for four sedimentary quartz samples, collected from different sites around Istanbul, Turkey. Applying a computerized deconvolution analysis to the LM-OSL curves, at least six individual components of first-order kinetics were identified and photoionization cross-section of each component was evaluated. The OSL dose-response curve of each component for each quartz sample was obtained, showing a remarkable differentiation from component to component. The behavior of a highly dosed sample to successive LM-OSL measurements was also studied showing a stable recuperation signal in the position of the "slow" and "medium" components and high resistance to OSL bleaching of the "slow" component. The individual sensitivity of each component as a function of the activation temperature was obtained. The sensitivity of each component was normalized over the respective sensitivity of the glow-peak at 110 degrees C of quartz in order to investigate the ability of the 110 degrees C glow-peak to act as a correction factor for all components of the LM-OSL curves examined.Yayın Component-resolved thermal stability and recuperation study of the LM-OSL curves of four sedimentary quartz samples(Elsevier Ltd, 2007-09) Kitis, George; Polymeris, George S.; Güneç Kıyak, NafiyeThermal stability as well as recuperation stands among the crucial general characteristics of different OSL components in quartz. Through a series of thermal stability and recuperation experiments, in conjunction with curve fitting studies, a component resolved analysis is carried out, studying these two aspects for the OSL components identified ill quartz samples collected from sites around Istanbul. A thermally unstable ultra-fast component is reported, which is almost totally removed by heating up to 250-280 degrees C. Its relation with the thermoluminescence (TL) glow-peak at about 325 degrees C is well established for naturally irradiated quartz. This relationship is also an important part of a general model for quartz on which many theoretical simulations of various OSL experimental results have been based. In the present work this relationship is systematically investigated in nine quartz samples of different origin. The linearly modulated OSL (LM-OSL) curves of all quartz samples for stimulation time less than 50s consists of two components discriminated easily by a computerized curve deconvolution (CCD) analysis. By comparing the un-bleached to the respective bleached TL glow-curve, it is found that the system of these two fast OSL components is directly related with only a small portion of the electron traps responsible for the TL glow-peaks in the temperature region 200-400 degrees C. By increasing the stimulation times, besides the two fast components, the medium and the slow components are also obtained. The medium and slow components are clearly related with the main body of the electron traps responsible for TL glow-peaks in the same temperature region 200-400 degrees C. Despite their different origin all quartz samples show an appreciable homogeneity concerning the number and time position of the individual components, whereas, the relative TL/OSL intensities vary strongly from sample to sample with the integrated TL intensity being generally much less than the integrated OSL intensity.Yayın Dating fossil root cast (Black Sea coast, Turkey) using thermoluminescence: Implications for windblown drift of shelf carbonates during MIS 2(Elsevier Ltd., 2016-05-16) Polymeris, George S.; Kitis, George; Güneç Kıyak, Nafiye; Theodosoglou, Eleni; Tsirliganis, Nestor C.; Ertek, Topçu Ahmet; Erginal, Ahmet EvrenRhizoliths are mostly sub-aerially exposed root prints which appear through removal of the rock units that cap them. A horizontal-lying residual of a rhizolith, consisting purely of soft inner core material of white color was recovered 10 km west of Şile, Istanbul, in northwest Turkey within laminated oolithic massive aeolianite. The inner part, consisting purely of calcium carbonate, was dated by applying thermoluminescence, while for the outer shelves optically stimulated luminescence of quartz was used for age assessment. The age of the CaCO3 infill occupying the original place of the decayed plant roots was found to be 26.8 (±5.0) ka, corresponding to MIS 2. When compared with the ages of the middle (105.2 ± 15.6 ka) and outer (127 ± 9 ka) layers, corresponding to the later stage of MIS 5e or early stage of MIS 5d, the inner core coincides with the last glacial period when the sea-level was lower than the present, promoting transportation of ooids by offshore winds in conjunction with the exposed shelf carbonates. Based on the results yielded, rhizolith is much younger than the host rock aeolianite and witnesses to last glacial sea level lowstand when removal of shelf carbonates by offshore winds was promoted from the exposed shallow shelf plain. It was found that the very good sensitivity of its main dosimetric peak is strongly affected by thermal treatments. This is also the case for OSL emission. The sensitivity loss due to heating implies that caution should be exercised while applying single aliquot protocols for dose evaluation. The sequence of dissolution and subsequent re-crystallization was established to be an extremely effective zeroing mechanism for the TL signal. The linearity in the dose response was also monitored in the case of dissolved and subsequently re-crystallized salt. The methods for this estimation involved the observation of the thermal and pre-dose sensitization with various re-firing temperatures for both TL and the OSL signals. In the former case, the 110 degrees C TL peak and the rest of the glow curve were used as proxies in this study. In the framework of a first attempt to investigate the impact of grain-size dependence on the sensitization of the luminescence signals, the aforementioned study was performed with four different pottery grain-size fractions: (i) less than 60m, (ii) 60-90m, (iii) 90-180m and (iv) 180-250m. The results clearly demonstrated the firing temperature mark of approximate to 500 degrees C in for the grain size of 90-180m, whileas in the case of the lower grain-size fractiona third proxy, the ratio of the pre-dosed to the thermal sensitization, was seen to indicate the firing temperature. The remaining two grain-size fractions failed to provide any meaningful results with regard to the firing temperature estimation. In the present work, a homogeneity study was performed on pre-dose sensitization in grains obtained from large quartz crystals samples collected from 10 different origins. The aliquot - to - aliquot scatter of the pre-dose sensitization of the 110 degrees C TL peak within each quartz crystal was monitored. The influence of the annealing on this scattering was also studied. Therefore, the investigation was applied to the un-fired "as is" samples as well as to samples annealed at 900 degrees C for 1 h following cooling to room temperature in air. The results showed that in the case of "as is" quartz the sensitization effect vary strongly within each aliquot of the same quartz sample. This strong variation is removed by both the high temperature annealing as well as heating up to 500 degrees C, involved in the TL measurements. These results are generally discussed in the framework of existing models and applications of the effect.Yayın Investigation of OSL signals from very deep traps in unfired and fired quartz samples(Elsevier Science BV, 2010-03-15) Kitis, George; Güneç Kıyak, Nafiye; Polymeris, George S.; Pagonis, VasilisThis paper presents an attempt to isolate experimentally optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) signals which may originate from very deep traps (VDT) in quartz samples. As VDT we consider those traps which are responsible for TL glow peaks with a peak maximum temperature above a TL readout temperature of 500 C. The basic experimental procedure used to isolate OSL signals from VDT is heating the quartz samples to 500 C immediately before measuring the OSL signal. The study was carried out on eight quartz samples of very different origins; it is found that all eight samples exhibit OSL signals from VDT, and for a wide region of OSL stimulation temperatures. The OSL signal from VDT depends strongly on the type of quartz sample studied and on whether the sample was fired at high temperatures or not. The behavior of the OSL signal from VDT as a function of the stimulation temperature is found to be very different in fired and unfired samples. The thermal activation energy E for the OSL signals from VDT is obtained in both fired and unfired samples. The OSL signal from VDT in quartz samples fired at 800 C for 1 h is very high, and the OSL curves consist of three well-defined components and a fourth slow component which is rather poorly resolved. The dose response of these components is obtained using a computerized deconvolution procedure for the dose region 0.5-300 Gy. The results are of importance for dating of ancient fired ceramics, since OSL signals from VDT could potentially extend appreciably the equivalent dose region toward both lower and higher values.Yayın Investigation of the OSL signal from very deep traps in natural quartz(Univ Agean, Dept Mediterranean Stud, 2010) Kitis, George; Güneç Kıyak, Nafiye; Polymeris, George S.; Pagonis, VasilisIt has been recently reported by several studies that a thermally transferred optically stimulated luminescence (TT-OSL) signal from quartz grains can be used to extend the dating range for quartz samples. The TT-OSL signals are believed to consist of a recuperated OSL (ReOSL) component and a basic-transferred OSL (BT-OSL) component. In the present work the TT-OSL signals from several types of unfired quartz samples were studied. A special protocol was used, which allowed the measure the OSL from very deep traps (VDT) as a function of the OSL stimulation temperature. It was found that all quartz samples exhibit TT-OSL signals, which are depended on sample and on the OSL stimulation temperature. The activation energy of the process was evaluated and the influences of the TT-OSL on the ReOSL dating protocol are discussed.Yayın IRSL dating of a deep water core from Pylos, Greece; comparison to post ir blue OSL and TL dating results(Univ Agean, 2011) Polymeris, George S.; Kitis, GeorgeThe 'double SAR' protocol procedure permits the determination of two equivalent dose (De) values for each polymineral aliquot; an IRSL De resulting mostly from feldspars along with a post-IR OSL De for a mixed signal for quartz (mostly) and feldspar grains. The objective of the present study is to test for the first time its usefulness for polymineral, coarse silt, closely-spaced deep-sea sediment samples. A new, 'double SAR' IRSL dataset is presented for the sedimentation ages of a deep-sea sediment core of the Hellenic Trench, drilled from a water depth of 4 km, near the deepest site of the Mediterranean Sea, outside Pylos, Greece. Post IR quartz-based optical dating was previously proved to be consistent with AMS radiocarbon ages, obtained from planktonic foraminifera from the same core. IRSL De values are, with one exception, always much greater than the corresponding (post-IR) OSL results. This result suggests that for the present study 'double SAR' protocol procedure was proved to be extremely effective method for separating the luminescence signals from quartz and feldspars. Furthermore, De values obtained after infra-red stimulation and thermoluminescence generally agree within errors. This quantitative equivalence of those two sets of De values implies that as in the case of IRSL, TL signal is also feldspar-dominated. IRSL ages vary between 3.5 and 7.8 ka with associated errors up to 9%. Application of 'double SAR' protocol to coarse silt, closely-spaced deep-sea sediment samples seems advisable, despite the fact that the post-IR blue OSL signal is the most stable signal, and is preferred for dating.Yayın LM-OSL thermal activation curves of quartz: Relevance to the thermal activation of the 110 degrees C TL glow-peak(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2008-01) Güneç Kıyak, Nafiye; Polymeris, George S.; Kitis, GeorgeThe thermally activated characteristics (TAC) of the linearly modulated optically stimulated luminescence (LM-OSL) signals of seven quartz samples from different origin were studied relative to the TAC of their respective thermoluminescence (TL) glow-peaks at 110 degrees C. Within the framework of the study the TAC behavior of the LM-OSL was investigated by measuring the OSL signal at room temperature (RT) with the 110 degrees C glow-peak present during OSL measurements, as well as, at 125 degrees C without the glow-peak at 110 degrees C removed by a cut-heat at 180 degrees C prior to OSL measurement. The LM-OSL curves were analyzed into individual components using a computerized deconvolution procedure. It was found that all individual LM-OSL components of each kind of quartz follow the TAC behavior of the respective TL glow-peak at 110 degrees C. The fourth component of the LM-OSL curve, centered at about t(m) = 400 s, appeared when the OSL measurements were performed at RT, whereas it was absent when the OSL measurement were performed at 180 degrees C. The experimental study measures both the continuous wave OSL (CW-OSL) and the linearly modulated (LM-OSL) signals from the same quartz sample for a range of stimulation temperatures between 180 and 280A degrees C, while the former is transformed to pseudo LM-OSL (ps LM-OSL). A computerized deconvolution curve analysis of the LM-OSL and ps LM-OSL signals was carried out, and the contributions of several OSL components to the initial OSL signal (0.1 s) were shown to be independent of the stimulation temperature used during the measurement. It was also found that the composite OSL (0.1 s) signal consists mainly of the first two OSL components present in the OSL curves. The equivalence of the ps LM-OSL (transformed CW-OSL) and of LM-OSL measurements was also examined by an appropriate choice of the experimental stimulation times, and of the stimulation power of the blue LEDs used during the measurement.Yayın Preliminary TL and OSL investigations of obsidian samples(Univ Agean, Dept Mediterranean Stud, 2010) Polymeris, George S.; Gogou, D.; Afouxenidis, Dimitrios; Rapti, Sofia; Tsirliganis, Nestor C.; Kitis, GeorgeObsidian is a volcaniclastic mineral extremely hard to break, which was used in prehistoric Greece (and elsewhere in the World), in order to provide tools, weapons, knives and arrowheads. The present work aims to characterize this extremely precious tool stone by using both thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) techniques and investigate its potential use for luminescence dating purposes. Basic TL and OSL properties, such as TL and OSL thermal and optical stability, repeatability, TL and LM-OSL glow curve shape and mainly the linearity of the TL and OSL signals as a function of beta dose were investigated. Artificially irradiated samples indicate all promising luminescence features, such as the 110 degrees C TL peak and dose response sub-linearity for intermediate doses, quick and effective bleaching all over the entire TL glow curve, along with quite linear CW-OSL dose response for doses larger than 5 Gy. The lack of predose sensitisation indicates the suitability of the material for single aliquot measurements. Furthermore, several features provide indications that the signal does not relate to quartz, but in fact to other silicates. Unfortunately, both lack of bleaching ability for NIL signal, along with a peculiar shape of NOSL, provide major difficulties in dating applications.Yayın Reconstruction of thermally quenched glow curves in quartz(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2012-04) Subedi, Bhagawan; Polymeris, George S.; Tsirliganis, Nestor C.; Pagonis, Vasilis; Kitis, GeorgeThe experimentally measured thermoluminescence (TL) glow curves of quartz samples are influenced by the presence of the thermal quenching effect, which involves a variation of the luminescence efficiency as a function of temperature. The real shape of the thermally unquenched TL glow curves is completely unknown. In the present work an attempt is made to reconstruct these unquenched glow curves from the quenched experimental data, and for two different types of quartz samples. The reconstruction is based on the values of the thermal quenching parameter W (activation energy) and C (a dimensionless constant), which are known from recent experimental work on these two samples. A computerized glow-curve deconvolution (CGCD) analysis was performed twice for both the reconstructed and the experimental TL glow curves. Special attention was paid to check for consistency between the results of these two independent CGCD analyses. The investigation showed that the reconstruction attempt was successful, and it is concluded that the analysis of reconstructed TL glow curves can provide improved values of the kinetic parameters E, s for the glow peaks of quartz. This also leads to a better evaluation of the half-lives of electron trapping levels used for dosimetry and luminescence dating.Yayın Relative response of TL and component-resolved OSL to alpha and beta radiations in annealed sedimentary quartz(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2011-10) Polymeris, George S.; Afouxenidis, Dimitrios; Raptis, Spyridoula; Liritzis, Ioannis; Tsirliganis, Nestor C.; Kitis, GeorgeKnowledge of the relative luminescence response to alpha and beta radiation is very important in TL and OSL dating. In the present study the relative alpha to beta response is studied in a sedimentary quartz sample, previously fired at 900 degrees C for 1 h, in the dose region between 1 and 128 Gy, for both thermoluminescence (T) and linearly modulated optically stimulated luminescence (LM - OSL). The LM OSL measurements were performed at room temperature and at 125 degrees C. All OSL signals were deconvolved into their individual components. Comparison of OSL curves after alpha and beta irradiation strongly supports that quartz OSL components follow first order kinetics in both cases. In the case of TL, the relative alpha to beta response is found to be very different for each TL glow-peak, but it does not depend strongly on irradiation dose. In the case of LM OSL measurements, it is found that the relative behaviour of the alpha to beta response is different for three distinct regions, namely the fast OSL component, the region of medium OSL component originating from the TL glow-peak at 110 degrees C when stimulation takes place at room temperature and finally the region of slow OSL component. Following stimulation at ambient temperature, the relative alpha to beta response of all components was not observed to depend significantly on dose, with the value of ratio being 0.03 and a tendency to decrease with increasing dose. However, in the case of measurements performed at 125 degrees C, the relative response of the fast components is much enhanced, and for the remaining components it increases with increasing dose. Special care must be taken to examine the relative alpha to beta response of the fast component at 125 degrees C which contrasts the relative response of the TL peak at ca. 325 degrees C. The implications for the dating of annealed quartz are also briefly discussed.Yayın Temperature lags of luminescence measurements in a commercial luminescence reader(Elsevier Science Inc, 2015-09-15) Güneç Kıyak, Nafiye; Kitis, George; Polymeris, George S.The temperature recorded in thermoluminescence and optically stimulated luminescence equipments is not the temperature of the sample but that of the heating element on which the thermocouple is attached. Depending upon the rate of heating, a temperature difference appears between the samples and the heating element, termed as temperature lag, which could have serious effects on the curve shapes and trapping parameters. In the present work the temperature lag effect is studied in a newly developed luminescence equipment measuring both thermoluminescence and optically stimulated luminescence. It is found that the temperature lag could be large for heating rates above 2 K/s and it is strongly dependent upon the sample holder. Since the quartz samples used in various applications are all of different origin it is useful to investigate whether the values of the thermal quenching parameters, i.e. the activation energy for thermal quenching W and a parameter C which describes the ratio of non-radiative to radiative luminescence transitions, evaluated mainly in specific quartz samples can be extrapolated to quartz samples of unknown origin as well as to quartz samples which are annealed at high temperatures. In the present work the TL glow curve of a series of un-annealed and annealed natural and synthetic quartz samples were studied as a function of the heating rate between 0.25 K/s and 16 K/s. Using an indirect fitting method it was found that the thermal quenching parameters W and C in most of the quartz samples are very similar to the values accepted in the literature. Furthermore, in some cases the thermal quenching parameters Wand Care not the same for all TL glow-peaks in the same glow-curve. In present work it is investigated that the thermal quenching parameters i.e. the activation energy W and the dimensionless parameter C, are more or less the same for every kind of quartzes or sample dependent on strong external treatment like a high temperature annealing. This preliminary investigation of seven quartz samples of different origin showed that the thermal quenching parameters W and C are common (universal) for most of the quartz samples.
