Yayın Ecotourism, traditional architecture and sustainable settlements(Ahmet FİDAN, 2026-01-22) Koca, GülruTourism is a major source of income globally, but rapid, uncontrolled development to meet demand has caused serious environmental degradation. As sustainability becomes a central global concern, integrating tourism with nature in a balanced way is increasingly important. In response, ecotourism has emerged as a sustainable alternative, aiming to preserve natural and cultural heritage, respect local lifestyles, and provide socio-economic benefits to communities. Rural areas are often considered ideal locations for establishing ecotourism facilities due to several factors. Primarily, they enable the sharing of natural and cultural assets with environmentally conscious tourists while helping to reduce rural-to-urban migration. Preventing rural depopulation and strengthening local communities socially and economically are therefore key objectives of sustainable settlement development. Proper site selection is the key factor during the construction of ecotourism facilities. Incorrectly located facilities can harm the natural environment. It is also essential to preserve the authenticity of these regions while enhancing their environmental friendliness through modern systems. This study focuses on some important criteria related to ecotourism facilities that are directly related to the protection of ecological balance and ensuring rural sustainability. Accordingly, the main aim of this study is to evaluate the potential of the traditional Turkish House as a model for ecotourism facilities. Within the scope of the study firstly, a literature review was carried out focusing on ecotourism facilities. This review explored the fundamental concept, key features, site selection and construction characteristics of ecotourism facilities. Then, the suitability of the traditional Turkish House for adaptation as an ecotourism facility is evaluated. In this context, environmentally compatible design, water management, waste management, energy conservation, sustainable technology and material use have been put forward as fundamental design features. When these features are evaluated in terms of traditional Turkish House; it has been seen those issues such as the use of water-efficient fixtures, the development of waste sorting practices, use of alternative energy sources, reforestation projects to meet timber demands and the improvement of wood’s fire resistance used come to the fore.Yayın Vertical design studio experience in interior architecture education(Eastern Mediterranean University, 2018-04) Adıgüzel Özbek, Derya; Melikoğlu Eke, Armağan Seçil; Yücesan, Ebru; Ozar, BetülDesign studios are at the core of interior architecture education. Environments where “learners form their own learning” enhance the communication between the teacherlearner, and learner–learner. Within this scope, the organization of design studios and the models that are applied are still the crucial research subjects on which teaching interior architecture works on. This paper investigates into the vertical interior design studio experience that is rebuilt in accordance with contemporary approaches towards studio education. Vertical interior design studio experience is built on associations, separations and on the interrelations between these associations and separations. The other input of this formation is the relations, associations, separations among the students within the group. The vertical studio setup that is applied during the 2016- 2017Fall Semester at Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design of FMV Işık University is examined in terms of its construction, experience process, outputs and further critical investigation is carried out on the learning method.Yayın Art Nouveau interiors in The Ottoman Empire: the case of Pera Palace hotel(Asos Yayınları, 2025-10-27) Erol, Eda; Karadağ, DeryaArt Nouveau, an influential art movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, shaped architectural and interior design across Europe and beyond. The period between 1960 and 1975 is an exceptional era of change and renewal for Turkey and Turkish Cinema. The acceleration of Turkish Cinema in this era has led various artists leading the change and development to arise. In this study, space use in Turkish Cinema, language and narration of spaces and the relationship with the point of view of the directors were investigated. It was intended to read and analyze the melodramatic movies of 1960-1975 by “Atıf Yılmaz Batıbeki, Lütfi Ömer Akad, Metin Erksan, Memduh Ün” who are considered as the leaders of the era of “film auteur period” in Turkish Cinema. 5 movies from each of these mentioned 4 directors, making a total of 20 movies were analyzed in the sense of “space, technique and narration”. Through the information gathered, it was concluded that even though different directors had different approaches on melodramatic movies of 1960-1975 area, these films have similar styles and properties, using urban images frequently and widely using single environment spaces.Yayın Importance of sketching in the design process and education(The Association of Science, Education and Technology, 2017-04) Özker, Serpil; Süyük Makaklı, ElifDesign education adopts different education models that changes constantly due to differences among disciplines. Education models can be varied with different training techniques. The design approaches introduced during the design process, which forms the basis of design education, gain meaning through sketching “with free-hand drawing” which is an effective communication tool for the profession. Sketching ensures fast development and introduction of opinions, serving as an active transmitter of visual expression. The computer technologies that are advancing rapidly today turns the traditional design, the “free-hand technique”, into an element with a conceptual impact on the design process. The study aims to discuss the “process of sketching” behind the design factor in the architecture and interior architecture education in Turkey and to analyse the method of sketching as well as its application styles, design, presentation, education, process and results, discussing the importance of sketching process in the education. Finally, the sketching process is associated with the concept of design, emphasizing that it is essential for the architecture and interior architecture design education and it is a skill that must be enhanced through education.Yayın High rise buildings in historic cities(The Association of Science, Education and Technology, 2017-04) Süyük Makaklı, Elif; Özker, SerpilHigh rise building was the most remarkable new building type to emerge in the late 19th century which has entirely changed the scale, appearance, concept and image of cities with its great visual impact. With advanced technologies the skylines of the cities dominated by high rise buildings all over the world in 20th century. In the 21st century it can be expected that more and more innovative high rise buildings will be built, utilizing the cutting-edge techniques also in historic cities with World Heritage Sites. High rise buildings’ relationship with their context is more problematic than any other structure, the subject of what they add and what they take away to the city is quite controversial. Introducing a new building in a historic city has a dramatic impact on traditional urbanistic structure. In this study high rise buildings in historic cities with World Heritage Sites, their development, and impact on the city and the urban image are examined by selected examples from different historic cities. The current approaches for designing high rise buildings in a historical setting will be also examined.Yayın Spatial analysis of traditional Ayvalık houses(Eastern Mediterranean University, 2021-04) Özker, SerpilArchitecture is a combination of economic, political, and cultural developments and as a result of this fact, it is reflective of the social life based on the specific characteristics of the period. The reflection of historical and cultural values in traditional architecture is significant in terms of obtaining historical facts. Traditional structures carry examples of architectural heritage to the future; especially socio-cultural changes have an impact on architecture. In this study, the traditional residential architecture of Ayvalık district in the province of Balıkesir-Turkey, which carries the traces of the 19 th century history in a socio-cultural and economic sense, is shown. Ayvalık is a district that provides examples of architecture, and that carries to the present day the 19th century social life with its traditional structures, where there are different economic, cultural and ethnic structures, and which boasts natural features as a result of the diversity formed by these different structures. It is observed that the district has increased its locational value even more recently thanks to its historical texture, commercial areas, and touristic facilities. In this regard, the aim of this study is to reveal in a spatial manner the traditional residential architecture shaped by the geographical, social, cultural, and architectural features of Ayvalık. In the study, approximately 20 houses built in different periods of the Ottoman Empire have been examined within Ayvalık’s urban fabric, and spatial analyzes of 4 traditional houses have been made in the context of “space, facade, construction” features. Finally, the current status of the houses has been revealed with the transformation of the historical and cultural heritage resulting from traditional structures.Yayın A biomimetic design experience in informal interior architecture education(The Design and Technology Association, 2020-03-02) Tuğlu Karslı, Umut; Özker, SerpilBiomimetic design is the process of creating innovative ideas inspired by nature. This approach adapts processes of natural organisms to solve design problems and guides design in interior architecture, similar to many other disciplines. This study aims to present the process of implementing the biomimetic approach to interior architectural design in an informal education environment and to discuss the outcomes of this experience. In this context, the approach and implementation methods of biomimetic design have been examined and a workshop study called “BIOStructure”, which was intended to integrate these methods into spatial design, has been analysed. This workshop was organized as part of an International Student Triennial in order to experience the approach of biomimetic design as an informal education tool. In the workshop, students were asked to experiment with biomimetic design in either a solution-driven approach, or a problem-driven approach. As a result, it was observed that most of the students preferred a solution-driven approach to a problem-driven approach and students in earlier stages of design education tended towards form-oriented abstraction of biological knowledge, whereas students with more design experience tended towards principle-oriented abstraction. A significant portion of global energy consumption is electricity, much of which is allocated to building lighting. The large number of educational buildings and their year-round use require efficient lighting strategies to reduce energy consumption. In classrooms, proper lighting design not only ensures energy savings but also enhances visual comfort, thereby supporting efficiency in education. This study aims to examine lighting design in classrooms within a holistic and sustainability-oriented framework by revealing the impact of wall surface colors and student desk material properties on energy-efficient lighting design. In this context, current illumination levels in classrooms were measured and evaluated for compliance with standard, then illuminance calculations were carried out using DiaLux.evo software to suggest wall color and desk material recommendations. The research findings indicate that, regardless of room orientation and the reflectance coefficient of the color, warm colors contribute more to work plane illuminance compared to cool colors. In addition, it has been observed that changes in wall surface colors and desk surface materials significantly affect not only the level of illuminance on the work and focal surface but also the quality of light distribution.Yayın AI in architectural education: rethinking studio culture(Atatürk Üniversitesi, 2025-09-20) Karadağ, DeryaThis article examines the pedagogical transformations emerging in architectural education through a conceptual and critical perspective focused on human–AI co-creativity. Co-creativity specifically refers to collaborations between human designers and artificial intelligence, in contrast to broader notions of collaborative creativity. The paper argues that AI functions not merely as a technical instrument, but as a co-creative partner that reshapes studio culture, authorship, and creative work. Drawing on selected studio-based cases, the study explores how AI-supported workflows influence ideation, representation, critique culture, prompt literacy, and ethical reasoning. Thematically, it engages with concepts such as cognitive augmentation and conceptual ambiguity to demonstrate how design pedagogy is evolving in response to intelligent systems. Rather than viewing AI as a generative tool alone, the article positions it as an epistemic and ethical agent that prompts a rethinking of studio environments as cultural and pedagogical spaces. Methodologically, the study adopts a casebased approach, analyzing selected 16 design studios in which AI was integrated into early-stage ideation, feedback sessions, and conceptual development. These cases extent strategies from prompt-driven speculation to hybrid critique practices, revealing a dynamic landscape of experimentation and adaptation. The findings suggest that AI can foster deeper conceptual inquiry, student reflection, and new modalities of authorship and collaboration. Eventually, the study underscores the need for reflexive pedagogical frameworks that integrate AI meaningfully enhancing, rather than displacing, human creativity.Yayın Pre-occupancy evaluation of wayfinding signage using immersive virtual reality(Elsevier Ltd, 2025-07) Karadağ, DeryaThis study explores how alternative wayfinding signage designs influence user experience within immersive virtual environments during early-stage architectural evaluation. A 3D model of a university building's ground floor was developed and experienced through head-mounted displays (HMDs) to simulate spatial conditions. Eighteen participants completed structured navigation tasks in two signage settings, followed by post-task surveys and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data—task completion times and circulation paths—were analysed alongside thematic evaluations of user feedback. Findings reveal that signage design affects spatial perception, navigational efficiency, and user satisfaction. The study shows that early-stage VR testing supports user-informed design decisions, especially for evaluating signage-based spatial strategies and related user experience considerations. VR emerges as a practical tool for integrating user-centred feedback into the pre-occupancy phase of spatial planning.Yayın A new frontier in design studio: AI and human collaboration in conceptual design(KeAi Communications Co., 2025-12) Karadağ, Derya; Ozar, BetülThis study explores the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the conceptual design phase of interior design education, focusing on AI's potential to help students visualise and refine creative ideas. Conducted within a design studio course, the research integrates text-to-image generators, particularly Midjourney to support students' design processes. Implemented in the fourth week of a 14-week course, a structured workshop introduced students to Midjourney, with surveys conducted both at this stage and during the final submission to capture changes in student perspectives. Using a two-phase case study involving a workshop, surveys, and interviews among senior undergraduate students in the bachelor's program of the Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department, the study assesses the impact of AI prompts, from simple keywords to detailed narratives, on concept development and project outcomes. Findings indicate that AI broadens design possibilities, facilitates iterative ideation, and improves conceptual precision through high-fidelity visualizations. While students view AI as a valuable addition to their creative process, they also express concerns about ethics and the need to balance AI's benefits with preserving design authenticity. This research contributes to the broader discussion on AI's role in design, advocating for a balanced integration that respects both technological potential and human creativity.Yayın Architectural images and values in banknote design: Turkish Republic E1. Emission Group(Gazi University, 2024-12-29) Süyük Makaklı, Elif; Ozar, BetülBanknotes are more than just a tool for economic exchange; they also represent the identity and shared ideals of the country they belong to. The elements used in banknote designs are a part of social values rather than aesthetic or visual features. The main design elements are images, color tones, flags, signatures, and various security codes. The designs symbolize the common values shared by societies and also their future goals. From ancient times to the present, banknotes featuring images of architectural structures have been popular. The images used are either pictures or abstractions of architectural structures. Abstractions often have broader meanings and symbolic connotations. Including the E9 emission group that is still used today, a total of 9 emission groups have been printed since the date of the Republic of Türkiye. The study focuses on the E1 Emission Group, the first banknotes of the Republic. It uses the descriptive analysis method to investigate the architectural, social, and cultural meanings of the architectural images on these banknotes. In addition to the functional and spatial characteristics of the architectural structures, their social, cultural, and historical meanings were evaluated with their periods' political and social atmosphere. The study reveals that banknotes are not only an economic tool but also a reflection of spatial and cultural values. The architectural images used on banknotes in the examined period emphasize common values and ideals and reflect the Republic's ideology and the period's spirit.
