Öğe Earthquakes, sustainable settlements and traditional construction techniques(Mehmet Topçu, 2023-12-31) Koca, GülruUrbanization is increasing all around the world due to population growth and big cities receive a high volume of migrants due to economic and social reasons. However, rapid population growth should be prevented in big cities in order to provide comfortable living conditions to the population. When urban planning practices do not catch the speed of urbanization; the tendency towards vertical architecture increases, the amount of green space decreases and problems related to unplanned urbanization come to the fore. These important problems, which have considerably increased recently in Türkiye, may lead greater problems in many respects. The parallel and self-sufficient development of urban and rural areas, which is defined as urban sustainability, is considered as the best-case scenario in urban planning practices. This aim is adopted nowadays by most of the countries in the world as it prevents rapid population growth in cities and depopulation in rural areas. Decisions which are taken to ensure urban sustainability are important for all countries. However, these decisions become even more important in regions with disaster risk. As the majority of Türkiye’s land area is under seismic risk, the problems which may arise due to rapid urbanization during an earthquake should be prevented. The damage and losses which could occur during an earthquake and the security, health, education problems which will arise after the earthquake can be solved by preventing dense housing and uncontrolled migration in urban areas. The connection between urban and rural areas should be strengthened. Besides, the social and economic sustainability of the rural area should be ensured. Settlements should be designed away from fault lines with a holistic approach as “living spaces” which consist components such as; transportation, infrastructure, green spaces and educational spaces. Additionally; the use of appropriate construction techniques and materials should be accepted as a priority. In this context, it can be mentioned that traditional building techniques, which have been developed over centuries and whose deficiencies have been improved during this period, should be preferred especially in rural areas. In this study, the criteria that gain importance in the construction of earthquake resistant and sustainable settlements are evaluated on Türkiye case. The precautions which should be taken to ensure rural sustainability and to prevent the depopulation of rural areas are emphasized. Within this scope, the importance of protecting the architectural texture and regenerating traditional building culture was discussed in constructing earthquake resistant settlements.Öğe Gamification of design studio in the context of a user-centered design workshop(ASLERD, 2023-09) Karadağ, DeryaIn project studios and workshops, students from many design disciplines, such as architectural, interior, and industrial design, apply theory and practice. Design research, conceptualization, development, communication, and interactive teamwork are the fundamental factors that unify different disciplines in project studios. The project studio is a rich environment where design thinking methods are implemented and original, creative ideas and designs are generated. In this setting, the design studio instructors' approaches, frameworks, and applied design thinking exercises gain significance. This paper examines the contributions of gamification components to design thinking methodology and the design studio, using the User-Centered Design Workshop as a case study.Öğe Design guideline for life center unit for inclusive schools in Turkey(Istanbul Teknik Universitesi, Faculty of Architecture, 2023-07) Cordan, Özge; Gülbahar, SimgeSupportive educational services in inclusive education (IE) are important for providing equal education rights to students with special needs and ensuring their participation in society. In Turkey, life center units, which were not included in IE legislation, were first established as a supportive educational service of inclusive schools at the primary schools and furthered throughout the secondary settings. Universal design (UD), which supports the accessibility and usability of the built environment for all, is recommended to guide the design of the IE schools. Thus, the aim of the study is to develop UD-compliant interior design guidelines for life center units by using a two-stage methodology. First, the dimensions of IE and the related physical environments in Turkey were examined. Second, periodic visits to life center units of Ankara Gökkuşağı Primary School and SERÇEV Accessible Vocational Anatolian High School were conducted by on-site observations and architectural plan reviews. The obtained data were analysed to acquire the interior space requirements, revealing the necessity of the life center unit for IE in Turkey and the need for design guidelines. The study is expected to fill an important gap in the field of interior architecture in terms of proposing a design guideline for supportive educational services in IE school environment. Moreover, the study is expected to provide a design guideline, specifically for designers, practitioners, academicians, and relevant stakeholders.Öğe İç mimarlık eğitiminde sanal gerçeklik uygulamalarının önemi(Kocaeli Üniversitesi, 2023-04-30) Nas, Sezin; Kavut, İsmail Emreİç mimarlık eğitiminde tasarım stüdyo derslerinin içerikleri incelendiği zaman bu derslerin bölümün temelini oluşturduğu görülmektedir. Bu çalışma kapsamında mevcut iç mimarlık proje derslerinin araç ve gereçleri, amaçları, çıktıları sorgulanmakta, iç mimarlık proje temelli tasarım stüdyosu derslerine sanal gerçeklik uygulamalarının dâhil edilmesinin gerekliliği vurgulanmakta ve eğitime katkıları ortaya konulmaktadır.Öğe Assessment of speech intelligibility during different teaching activities in classrooms with and without acoustic treatment(Elsevier Ltd, 2023-05) Şaher, Konca; Bulunuz, Mızrap; Kelmendi, Jonida; Nas, SezinThere is limited data for assessing speech intelligibility in real classrooms with realistic occupied noise levels and teacher's and students’ speech levels for different teaching activities in Turkish secondary school classrooms. This study investigates the effect of reverberation time (RT), occupied noise levels and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) on speech transmission index (STI) in real classrooms for instruction and group work. Noise levels were measured and STI values were calculated in two secondary school classrooms with RT of 0.88 s and 2.73 s. During instruction situation, calculated mean STI values were 0.63 (classroom with acoustic treatment) and 0.29 (classroom without acoustic treatment) for normal voice effort and 0.65 (classroom with acoustic treatment) and 0.39 (classroom without acoustic treatment) for raised voice effort. During group work, STI values ranged from 0.50 to 0.74 in classroom with acoustic treatment and from 0.01 to 0.34 in classroom without any acoustic treatment. SNR of 15 dBA is only approached in classroom with acoustic treatment during instruction situation. The effect of increasing SNR on STI is prominent in the classroom without acoustic treatment which already has low SNR values. The present results show that the classroom with acoustic treatment will have good speech intelligibility for instruction with normal vocal effort and for group work with raised vocal effort at 3 m distance. However, the classroom with no acoustic treatment will have STI values in the range of bad and poor intelligibility. The present results confirm the impact of SNR and RT on speech intelligibility and shows that RT value of minimum 0.8 s is optimal to have good speech intelligibility in a secondary school classroom of approximately 250 m3 with a capacity of 18 students.Öğe Temel bina akustiği uzmanlık eğitimi önkoşullarının iç mimarlık bölümü üzerinden sorgulanması(Kocaeli Üniversitesi, 2022-12-31) Nas, SezinBina akustiği tüm dünyada mimari ve iç mimari alanlarında yapı fiziğinin ayrılmaz bir parçasını oluşturmakta ve işitsel konfor koşullarının sağlanmasında büyük bir rol oynamaktadır. The metropolitan area of Istanbul, with its rapid urbanization rate, has faced intense pressure regarding the sustainability of urban habitats. In this context, landscapes comprising patches affected by various disturbances and undergoing temporal changes must be analyzed, in order to assess city-related disturbances. In this study, the main objective was to understand how urbanization changed the function of the spatial distribution of the urban mosaic and, more specifically, its relationship with the size, shape, and connection among land-use classes. For this purpose, we took Besiktas, a district of Istanbul, as the study area. We evaluated the landscape pattern of the urban environment in two stages. First, we used medium-resolution satellite imagery to reveal the general interactions in the urbanization process. Landscape- and class-level landscape metrics were selected to quantify the landscape connectivity, and the distances between classes (green areas and artificial surfaces), patterns, and processes, using five satellite images representing a time span of 51 years (1963, 1984, 1997, 2005, and 2014). The general landscape structure was examined by looking at the temporal–spatial processes of artificial surface and green areas obtained from these medium-resolution satellite images. The trends in selected landscape-level metrics were specified and discussed through the use of a moving window analysis. We then used Pleiades high-resolution satellite imagery (2015) to analyze the landscape structure in more detail. This high-resolution base image allows us to recognize the possibility of classifying basic cultural landscape classes. The findings regarding the spatial arrangement of each class in the areas allocated to 14 cultural landscape classes were interpreted by associating them with the landscape functions. Finally, particulate matter (PM10) concentration data were collected and evaluated as an ecological indicator, in order to reveal the relationships between landscape structure and landscape function. In short, we first evaluated the whole landscape structure using medium-resolution data, followed by the classification of cultural landscapes using high-resolution satellite imagery, providing a time-effective—and, therefore, essential—auxiliary method for landscape evaluation. This two-stage evaluation method enables inferences to be made that can shed light on the landscape functions in an urban environment based on the landscape structure.Öğe Kütüphaneden öğrenme merkezine: bilgi çağında dönüşümü kütüphane mekânları üzerinden okumak(Nilay Özsavaş Uluçay, 2021-12-01) Tuğlu Karslı, Umut; Özker, SerpilBilgi çağında teknolojik gelişmelere bağlı olarak bilgiye ulaşma yöntem ve araçları farklılaşmış; kütüphanelerin hizmet ettiği işlevler bilgi çalışanlarının gereksinimlerine yönelik olarak dönüşüme uğramıştır. Sonuç olarak, kütüphanelerin bilgi çağı toplumunun değişen gereksinimlerine cevap verecek biçimde yeniden yapılandırmasında sahip olması gereken mekânsal özellikleri “topluluk yaratma/sosyal geçirgenlik”, “çeşitlilik”, “etkileşimlilik”, “bilgi teknolojilerine uygunluk” ve “tasarım estetiği/atmosfer” olarak belirlenmiştir.Öğe Loft living and gentrification: a case for Istanbul galata district reading change through loft designs(Kocaeli Üniversitesi, 2021-08-31) Tuğlu Karslı, Umut; Özker, SerpilFollowing economic restructuring movements in 1950s, loft living first emerged as a result of gentrification process in New York City. In Istanbul, loft living became available recently and loft designs have represented in limited cases. This paper aims to examine loft living and loft designs in Galata, emerged as a result of micro-scale gentrification process in Istanbul. The research defines lofts in terms of spatial criteria; examines loft designs as an architectural result of gentrification process in Galata and aims to read the socio-cultural change through these designs. Selected lofts were examined through observations, interviews and photographs. The analysis table specifies names, construction dates, conversion dates, user profiles and according to criteria predetermined as part of the research, investigates what type these lofts correspond in structural and functional terms. Consequently, lofts emerged following the initial gentrification movements in Galata (original lofts converted for mixed-use) still exist in district; the number of ‘lofts converted for commercial use’ has increased due to the recent popularization of the area. Besides, ‘semi-lofts converted for residential use’ and ‘imitation lofts built for residential use' reflecting just the commercial image of loft living and realized by large-scale construction firms, have emerged.Öğe A case study on online design workshop experience: gamification and space(Orhan HACIHASANOĞLU, 2022-10) Karadağ, Derya; Gülbahar, Simge; Ozar, BetülDesign schools consist of three main axes; courses that provide knowledge in various fields of design, studio courses and internships. Besides, the indisputable fact is the importance of design competitions and informal workshops that feed the designer candidate to gain experience in different fields of the discipline. In addition, another importance of informal workshops is the contribution of researchers in this field to the development of design education. The effects and potentials of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are also another area of research on design education, in particular design studio courses. The use of ICTs in the field of design education has led gamification to come to the fore as an ascending concept. A series of methodologies and tools have been developed, such as gamification, as well as the different kinds of Virtual Learning Environments to ensure the motivation of students and avoid the lack of attention in online courses. In this study, an online workshop, "Gamification and Space", is investigated as a case study. The contribution of the concept of gamification to design education has been evaluated in line with the observations and experiences gained. The data was gathered from the workshop presentations held on the last day and the final manuscripts of the workshops. The collected data was analyzed by the workshop coordination team, and classifications were made regarding the aspects of the gamification used during the workshop. In addition, it is aimed to discuss the potentials of ICTs in design courses. The observations show that the use of gamified elements has the potential to enrich instructional methods, especially when we consider online education, virtual learning environments and visual collaboration tools.
