Public buildings in İzmir in the First National Architecture period

With the proclamation of the Republic and Ankara becoming the capital, the works to build a modern city identity with all aspects of the newly established regime began in many ways. In the process, Ankara has become an exemplary city in the country in the formation of exemplary structures with the factor of ‘national identity’. Afterwards, it continued to develop in cities such as Istanbul and Izmir, and endeavored to show its reflections on many cities in the country. From the proclamation of the Republic to the 1950s, the effects of modernization and Westernization were felt; One of the first examples of this was in the field of architecture. The construction of public buildings, which started with Ankara, showed its effects in Istanbul and Izmir in the same period. The structures that emerged with the work of local and foreign architects have also affected other public structures in the city where they are located in the architectural field. The National Architecture Movement, which is considered as two periods, in its first period; Seeing the Ottoman and Seljuk architectural influences, it exhibits an eclectic attitude, and in the second period, it showed its effect on architectural structures with a modern and rationalist attitude. The aim of the study is to examine the public buildings in İzmir in the First National Architecture Movement in the Early Republican Period. Although there are many studies on this subject in the literature, this study has been realized because there is a gap in public buildings in İzmir. The study is based on a literature review. Within the scope of the research, in the first part, the political developments before the Early Republican Period and the understanding of national identity, and in the second part, the public buildings built in Izmir with the effect of the First National Architecture Movement in the Early Republican Period were examined.

Cumhuriyet’in ilanı ve Ankara’nın başkent olmasıyla birlikte, yeni kurulan rejimin her alanıyla modern bir şehir kimliğiyle inşa edilmesi çalışmalar çok yönlü başlamıştır. Süreç dâhilinde Ankara’nın ‘ulusal kimlik’ etkeniyle örnek yapıların oluşmasında ülkede örnek bir şehir olmuştur. Ardından İstanbul ve İzmir gibi şehirlerde devamında gelişerek ülkedeki birçok şehre yansımalarını göstermek için gayret etmiştir. Cumhuriyet’in ilanından 1950’li yıllara kadar geçen süreçte modernleşme ve Batılılaşma etkilerini hissettirmiş; bunun ilk örneklerinden biri mimari alanda olmuştur. Ankara ile başlayan kamu binalarının yapımı, aynı süreçte İstanbul ve İzmir’de etkilerini göstermiştir. Yerli ve yabancı mimarların çalışmalarıyla ortaya çıkan yapılar bulunduğu şehirdeki diğer kamu yapılarını da mimari alanda etkilemiştir. İki dönem olarak ele alınan Ulusal Mimarlık Akımı, birinci döneminde; Osmanlı ve Selçuklu mimari etkilerini görerek eklektik bir tutum sergiler, ikinci dönemde ise modern ve rasyonalist bir tutumla mimari yapılarda etkisini göstermiştir. Çalışmanın amacı, Erken Cumhuriyet Dönemi’nde Birinci Ulusal Mimarlık Akımı’ndaki İzmir’de yer alan kamu yapılarının incelemektir. Literatürde bu konuyla ilgili birçok çalışma bulunmasına rağmen İzmir’deki kamu yapıları konusunda boşluk görüldüğü için bu çalışma gerçekleşmiştir. Çalışma literatür taramasına dayanmaktadır. Araştırma kapsamında birinci bölümde, Erken Cumhuriyet Dönemi öncesinde yaşanan politik gelişmeler ve ulusal kimlik anlayışı, ikinci bölümde Erken Cumhuriyet Dönemi’ndeki Birinci Ulusal Mimarlık Akımı etkisiyle İzmir’de yapılan kamu yapıları incelenmiştir.
