The Terrain: New Genre Public Art kitabı çalışmamın temelini oluşturmaktadır.
New Genre Public art was founded by a group of activist artists, who could not be silent to the socio politic situation the world was in as it approached the 90s, as a result of their search for solutions to the discriminations and injustices they were witnessing. They have adopted the feminist and Marxists groups, established after the 70s, as their earlier role-models, due to the central importance given to the audience concepts. Concepts of this art which adopt socialist ideology is built on, politics, social problems and interaction with its audience. In order not to fall into the same mistakes as the prior Avangard art groups, New Genre Public art is one that asks questions to itself and looks for the answers. Suzaanne Lacy’s book, which has not yet been translated to Turkish, Mapping The Terrain: New Genre Public Art is the foundation for this study. First the political continuum behind this development and the concepts it has been influenced by have been studied. Later it covers the points of view, vision, critique and suggestions of the artists and curators who have contributed in the creation of this art such as Suzanne Lacy, Mary Jane Jacob, Suzi Gablik, Guillermo Gomez Pena, Lucy R. Lippard and Allan Kaprow. Additionally, in this study samples of this “community based” art is presented.
