In the architectural curriculum organisation 'design studio' is the unique and preeminent subject. Freshman students encounter 'design' first in basic design course, before they know what designing incorporates. The Basic Design is the starting point of initiating creativity in architecture education. It helps each student to understand architecture as a creative and innovative practice in the first year of education. There are areas where thinking and design skills of the students are improved yet it is different from other courses. Increased number of students for each academic member in the project courses conducted through a mentor system has resulted in failure to sustain project-oriented education actively and reduced the productivity quality of education. The social, cultural and economic events that took place on an international level thanks to globalization made the impact of change felt which was reflected on the urban space and, therefore, on the house, resulting in an increase in the importance of the residential sector. Externalization and developed economic structure enabled more investments into houses which introduced a concept of housing populated in urban fringes starting from the city centers. The housing concept which was shaped by the impacts of the urban transformation after 1980 turned into a new emerging lifestyle in Istanbul in 2000s. Accordingly, the study aims to establish the position of housing in Istanbul and new meanings formed by the socio-cultural changes. In this sense, housing before and after 1980, globalization, gentrification, urban transformation, spatial segregation, socio-economic and cultural aspects were discussed based on the structural benchmarks, and 4 different housing forms, namely the "Loft", "Residence", "Terraced House", and "Gated Communities", with individual structural examples. This study, thus, aims to question the form of tenancy of these houses created through varying concepts and concerns today. The results obtained showed that the housing as an indicator of cultural life in Istanbul has turned into a lifestyle that is shaped by similar aspects and commercial concern, despite different approaches or production forms, eliminating the traces of the cultural life of the society.Yayın Loft living and gentrification: a case for Istanbul galata district reading change through loft designs(Kocaeli Üniversitesi, 2021-08-31) Tuğlu Karslı, Umut; Özker, SerpilFollowing economic restructuring movements in 1950s, loft living first emerged as a result of gentrification process in New York City. In Istanbul, loft living became available recently and loft designs have represented in limited cases. This paper aims to examine loft living and loft designs in Galata, emerged as a result of micro-scale gentrification process in Istanbul. The research defines lofts in terms of spatial criteria; examines loft designs as an architectural result of gentrification process in Galata and aims to read the socio-cultural change through these designs. Selected lofts were examined through observations, interviews and photographs. The analysis table specifies names, construction dates, conversion dates, user profiles and according to criteria predetermined as part of the research, investigates what type these lofts correspond in structural and functional terms. Consequently, lofts emerged following the initial gentrification movements in Galata (original lofts converted for mixed-use) still exist in district; the number of ‘lofts converted for commercial use’ has increased due to the recent popularization of the area. Besides, ‘semi-lofts converted for residential use’ and ‘imitation lofts built for residential use' reflecting just the commercial image of loft living and realized by large-scale construction firms, have emerged.Yayın High rise buildings in historic cities(The Association of Science, Education and Technology, 2017-04) Süyük Makaklı, Elif; Özker, SerpilHigh rise building was the most remarkable new building type to emerge in the late 19th century which has entirely changed the scale, appearance, concept and image of cities with its great visual impact. With advanced technologies the skylines of the cities dominated by high rise buildings all over the world in 20th century. In the 21st century it can be expected that more and more innovative high rise buildings will be built, utilizing the cutting-edge techniques also in historic cities with World Heritage Sites. High rise buildings’ relationship with their context is more problematic than any other structure, the subject of what they add and what they take away to the city is quite controversial. Introducing a new building in a historic city has a dramatic impact on traditional urbanistic structure. In this study high rise buildings in historic cities with World Heritage Sites, their development, and impact on the city and the urban image are examined by selected examples from different historic cities. The current approaches for designing high rise buildings in a historical setting will be also examined.Yayın Spatial analysis of traditional Ayvalık houses(Eastern Mediterranean University, 2021-04) Özker, SerpilArchitecture is a combination of economic, political, and cultural developments and as a result of this fact, it is reflective of the social life based on the specific characteristics of the period. The reflection of historical and cultural values in traditional architecture is significant in terms of obtaining historical facts. Traditional structures carry examples of architectural heritage to the future; especially socio-cultural changes have an impact on architecture. In this study, the traditional residential architecture of Ayvalık district in the province of Balıkesir-Turkey, which carries the traces of the 19 th century history in a socio-cultural and economic sense, is shown. Ayvalık is a district that provides examples of architecture, and that carries to the present day the 19th century social life with its traditional structures, where there are different economic, cultural and ethnic structures, and which boasts natural features as a result of the diversity formed by these different structures. It is observed that the district has increased its locational value even more recently thanks to its historical texture, commercial areas, and touristic facilities. In this regard, the aim of this study is to reveal in a spatial manner the traditional residential architecture shaped by the geographical, social, cultural, and architectural features of Ayvalık. In the study, approximately 20 houses built in different periods of the Ottoman Empire have been examined within Ayvalık’s urban fabric, and spatial analyzes of 4 traditional houses have been made in the context of “space, facade, construction” features. Finally, the current status of the houses has been revealed with the transformation of the historical and cultural heritage resulting from traditional structures.Yayın Importance of sketching in the design process and education(The Association of Science, Education and Technology, 2017-04) Özker, Serpil; Süyük Makaklı, ElifDesign education adopts different education models that changes constantly due to differences among disciplines. Education models can be varied with different training techniques. The design approaches introduced during the design process, which forms the basis of design education, gain meaning through sketching “with free-hand drawing” which is an effective communication tool for the profession. Sketching ensures fast development and introduction of opinions, serving as an active transmitter of visual expression. The computer technologies that are advancing rapidly today turns the traditional design, the “free-hand technique”, into an element with a conceptual impact on the design process. The study aims to discuss the “process of sketching” behind the design factor in the architecture and interior architecture education in Turkey and to analyse the method of sketching as well as its application styles, design, presentation, education, process and results, discussing the importance of sketching process in the education. This interaction between architecture and cinema makes spaces an impressive element for cinema. In this context, people's desire to be able to change the environment in which they are living increases the importance of spaces. Cinema has been continuously changing amid social events through the periods of “Pre-Yeşilçam period” and “film auteur period” since the day it entered in Turkey. The period between 1960 and 1975 is an exceptional era of change and renewal for Turkey and Turkish Cinema. The acceleration of Turkish Cinema in this era has led various artists leading the change and development to arise. In this study, space use in Turkish Cinema, language and narration of spaces and the relationship with the point of view of the directors were investigated. It was intended to read and analyze the melodramatic movies of 1960-1975 by “Atıf Yılmaz Batıbeki, Lütfi Ömer Akad, Metin Erksan, Memduh Ün” who are considered as the leaders of the era of “film auteur period” in Turkish Cinema. 5 movies from each of these mentioned 4 directors, making a total of 20 movies were analyzed in the sense of “space, technique and narration”. Through the information gathered, it was concluded that even though different directors had different approaches on melodramatic movies of 1960-1975 area, these films have similar styles and properties, using urban images frequently and widely using single environment spaces.Yayın A biomimetic design experience in informal interior architecture education(The Design and Technology Association, 2020-03-02) Tuğlu Karslı, Umut; Özker, SerpilBiomimetic design is the process of creating innovative ideas inspired by nature. This approach adapts processes of natural organisms to solve design problems and guides design in interior architecture, similar to many other disciplines. This study aims to present the process of implementing the biomimetic approach to interior architectural design in an informal education environment and to discuss the outcomes of this experience. In this context, the approach and implementation methods of biomimetic design have been examined and a workshop study called “BIOStructure”, which was intended to integrate these methods into spatial design, has been analysed. This workshop was organized as part of an International Student Triennial in order to experience the approach of biomimetic design as an informal education tool. In the workshop, students were asked to experiment with biomimetic design in either a solution-driven approach, or a problem-driven approach.
