Yayın Loft living and gentrification: a case for Istanbul galata district reading change through loft designs(Kocaeli Üniversitesi, 2021-08-31) Tuğlu Karslı, Umut; Özker, SerpilFollowing economic restructuring movements in 1950s, loft living first emerged as a result of gentrification process in New York City. In Istanbul, loft living became available recently and loft designs have represented in limited cases. This paper aims to examine loft living and loft designs in Galata, emerged as a result of micro-scale gentrification process in Istanbul. The research defines lofts in terms of spatial criteria; examines loft designs as an architectural result of gentrification process in Galata and aims to read the socio-cultural change through these designs. Selected lofts were examined through observations, interviews and photographs. The analysis table specifies names, construction dates, conversion dates, user profiles and according to criteria predetermined as part of the research, investigates what type these lofts correspond in structural and functional terms. Consequently, lofts emerged following the initial gentrification movements in Galata (original lofts converted for mixed-use) still exist in district; the number of ‘lofts converted for commercial use’ has increased due to the recent popularization of the area. Besides, ‘semi-lofts converted for residential use’ and ‘imitation lofts built for residential use' reflecting just the commercial image of loft living and realized by large-scale construction firms, have emerged. Yayın Günümüz tasarım stüdyolarında uygulanan eğitim yöntemleri ve atölyenin mekansal kurgusuna etkisi(Yapı-Endüstri Merkezi, 2015-05) Tuğlu Karslı, Umut; Özker, SerpilThe design studios constitute the backbone of design disciplines' education such as architecture, interior architecture and industrial product design. The spatial organization of the studio environment in accordance with the pedagogical requirements of todays' design education has a great importance in terms of students' and tutors' performance. The instructional methods applied in design studios and the tools required for their application play a significant role in spatial organization of the studio environment. Developing and changing instructional methods and tools have brought a wide variety of use/space requirements in addition to "critique" environments required in traditional design studios. In this context, the aim of the study is to examine the instructional methods applied in today's design studios, to evaluate the effect of these methods on spatial organization of the studio environments and to discuss spatial solutions brought by changing requirements of todays' design studios with the help of design studio environment examples of leading architecture schools.Yayın A biomimetic design experience in informal interior architecture education(The Design and Technology Association, 2020-03-02) Tuğlu Karslı, Umut; Özker, SerpilBiomimetic design is the process of creating innovative ideas inspired by nature. This approach adapts processes of natural organisms to solve design problems and guides design in interior architecture, similar to many other disciplines. This study aims to present the process of implementing the biomimetic approach to interior architectural design in an informal education environment and to discuss the outcomes of this experience. In this context, the approach and implementation methods of biomimetic design have been examined and a workshop study called “BIOStructure”, which was intended to integrate these methods into spatial design, has been analysed. This workshop was organized as part of an International Student Triennial in order to experience the approach of biomimetic design as an informal education tool. In the workshop, students were asked to experiment with biomimetic design in either a solution-driven approach, or a problem-driven approach. As a result, it was observed that most of the students preferred a solution-driven approach to a problem-driven approach and students in earlier stages of design education tended towards form-oriented abstraction of biological knowledge, whereas students with more design experience tended towards principle-oriented abstraction.Yayın A bibliometric mapping analysis for the change on spatial design in Covid-19 process(Liberty Academic Publishers, 2023-12-01) Özker, Serpil; Nas, Sezin; Tuğlu Karslı, Umut; Budayan, Cenk; Tutkun, CansuIn 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic had a global impact, necessitating changes to daily life, since activities such as work, education, shopping, and socializing were curtailed due to the pandemic, and people had to perform most of these activities in their houses. However, the existing residential houses were insufficient to perform these activities. As a result, concepts affecting private life became prominent, leading to limitations on vital needs. Therefore, the restrictions imposed by the governments had negative social and psychological consequences for individuals. The limitations of action areas within houses lead to changes in spatial design. Consequently, studies on the requirements of the human environment have been initiated, with concepts such as flexibility, natural spaces, and privacy gaining importance in the design and use of housing. This process has led to a redefinition of the concept of space, necessitating the adaptation of spatial design to the new normal. The present study examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on spatial design through a comprehensive review of relevant literature. Thus, a theoretical framework was proposed by revealing the distribution of the existing studies through a bibliometric analysis. Two bibliometric analyses were performed by considering the titles, abstracts, keywords of the studies, and findings, and conclusions of the studies, respectively. Based on the identified prominent keywords at the end of bibliometric analyses, the problem and result concepts were revealed. The most commonly used words are "user," "order," "function," "housing," "pandemic," "time," "change," "process," "impact," "quality," "environment," "space," "life," "need," "health," "quarantine," and "architecture."Yayın Spatial transformation of traditional Ayvalık house: a comparative analysis of two houses(Istanbul Aydın University, 2023-11) Özker, Serpil; Tuğlu Karslı, UmutThe characteristics of traditional houses vary according to culture and geography and reflect cultural and historical identity of the society it belongs. Ayvalık is one of the historical settlements that preserves its original identity, due to its 19th-century traditional housing texture. The traditional houses of Ayvalık have a different ethnic structure shaped by Greek and Turkish identity. This ethnic structure reveals the traditional house texture with its characteristics embodying the influence of different lifestyles. Environmental factors emerging depending on the conditions and requirements of the period cause the damage of many traditional buildings. The research covers a comparative spatial analysis of two traditional Ayvalık houses located in İsmet Paşa Neighbourhood of Ayvalık and aims to read the transformation through the analysis of these two houses, according to the spatial characteristics of the traditional Ayvalık house defined by literature review. The reasons for selection of these two houses are: “first house has not been restored and has no a housing project, while the other house has been restored and has a housing project, and the buildings are adjacent and easily accessible by researchers”. Although there are a few traditional buildings in Ayvalık, it is very difficult to find all these features in one building. The number of sources analyzing the architecture of traditional Ayvalık houses is very limited, inventory studies of residential buildings are almost non-existent. Although the house number 2 is located in the historical site, the fact that its project has not been created is one of the important factors in case selection. By determining the spatial characteristics of the traditional Ayvalık house, the research also aims to contribute to the cultural assets documentation system and the related literature. In this context, the spatial characteristics of the traditional Ayvalık house are determined in line with the relevant literature, comparative spatial analyses of two houses are made in line with these characteristics, and the transformation of the buildings are examined through photographic documentation and on-site observation. As a result, it is determined that traditional Ayvalık houses have undergone changes in line with the needs of their users without losing their residential identity, which is generally their primary purpose of use from past to present and in the case of two houses which have the architectural characteristics of the traditional Ayvalık house; it is determined that the houses partially preserved their original spatial characteristics and preserved the traditional house texture with individual interventions and efforts.
