    EEG signal compression based on classified signature and envelope vector sets

    In this paper, a novel method to compress electroencephalogram (EEG) signal is proposed. The proposed method is based on the generation process of the classified signature and envelope vector sets (CSEVS), which employs an effective k-means clustering algorithm. It is assumed that both the transmitter and the receiver units have the same CSEVS. In this work, on a frame basis, EEG signals are modeled by multiplying only three factors called as classified signature vector, classified envelope vector, and gain coefficient (GC), respectively. In other words, every frame of an EEG signal is represented by two indices R and K of CSEVS and the GC. EEG signals are reconstructed frame by frame using these numbers in the receiver unit by employing the CSEVS. The proposed method is evaluated by using some evaluation metrics that are commonly used in this area such as root-mean-square error, percentage root-mean-square difference, and measuring with visual inspection. The performance of the proposed method is also compared with the other methods. It is observed that the proposed method achieves high compression ratios with low-level reconstruction error while preserving diagnostic information in the reconstructed EEG signal.

    Synthesis and liquid crystalline behavior of random copolymer of poly(ethylene oxide) macromonomer and liquid crystalline monomer by the photon transmission technique

    Random copolymers of poly(ethylene oxide) macromonomer with p-vinylbenzyl end-functional group (PEOVB) and liquid crystalline monomer, namely 6-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-oxy)hexyl acrylate (COA), were prepared by conventional free radical polymerization. A living anionic polymerization technique was employed for the synthesis of PEO macromonomers bearing p-vinylbenzyl moiety at one end. The photon transmission method was also applied to study the phase transitions of COA monomer and its random copolymer with PEO. It was found that, for both samples, the nematic-smectic A transition is continuous, but the critical fluctuation regions do not allow to obtain 3D XY values. Instead, we have obtained the values close to mean field regime. Scaling of thermal hystersis for random copolymer sample near the nematic-isotropic transition was studied as well. Thermal hysteresis loops were produced under linearly varying temperature. It was shown that the areas of the hysteresis loops scale with the temperature scanning rate with an exponent being equal to 0.614 which is in good agreement with the field-theoretical value.

    The sectoral sweeper scheme for wireless sensor networks: Adaptive antenna array based sensor node management and location estimation

    We introduce a novel sensor node management and location estimation method referred as sectoral sweeper (SS) scheme that uses an adaptive antenna array (AAA) at a central node in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). With the SS scheme, the central node can activate or deactivate the nodes in a desired region which is specified by beam direction and beam width of the transmit beam and also by minimum and maximum thresholds (R (min) and R (max)) for the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) of signals received by the nodes. In order to perform a specified task that is associated with a Task_id, two different beams are transmitted, which are task region beam and routing region beam to switch the nodes into active or routing modes. Since our scheme does not require any additional software or hardware for node management and location estimation in sensor nodes, the deficiencies of tiny sensors are effectively eliminated. The proposed scheme is shown to reduce the number of sensing nodes and the amount of data traffic in the network, thus leading to considerable savings in energy consumption and prolonged sensor lifetime.

    Maximum likelihood blind channel estimation for space-time coding systems

    Sophisticated signal processing techniques have to be developed for capacity enhancement of future wireless communication systems, In recent years, space-time coding is proposed to provide significant capacity gains over the traditional communication systems in fading wireless channels. Space-time codes are obtained by combining channel coding, modulation, transmit diversity, and optional receive diversity in order to provide diversity at the receiver and coding gain without sacrificing the bandwidth. In this paper, we consider the problem of blind estimation of space-time coded signals along with the channel parameters. Both conditional and unconditional maximum likelihood approaches are developed and iterative solutions are proposed. The conditional maximum likelihood algorithm is based on iterative least squares with projection whereas the unconditional maximum likelihood approach is developed by means of finite state Markov process modelling. The performance analysis issues of the proposed methods are studied. Finally, some simulation results are presented.

    In this comment, we analyze a recently proposed Baptista-like cryptosystem and show that it is not invertible. Others weaknesses are also reported. A modified version of this cryptosystem is proposed to show how to overcome the non-invertibility.

    Al-Qaida, 'war on terror' and Turkey

    The new wave of international terrorism gained strength in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, threatening not only the USA and its allies but also, as seen in the latest incidents, a significant part of the world. Continuing al-Qaida attacks signify the vulnerability and weakness of defence, security and intelligence systems in the face of the new international terror. The terror network has created an image of a postmodern virtual state. We argue that it has been shaped by a common ideology rather than in physical terms. Thus it is necessary to develop novel approaches. In this article we discuss Turkey's struggle against the new terror, underlining the fact that it is a Muslim majority state and has lively and dynamic Islamic traditions and different shades of Islamic belief. This situation makes the discussion more interesting, focusing on the position, perception, difficulties and struggle of a Muslim state with a democratic and secular mode of government vis-a-vis an allegedly Islam-inspired international terror network. There is an urgent need to develop an international terror strategy to counter terror attacks against Turkey, Britain, Egypt and others. We underscore the vital requirement of reconciling the macro-schemes and priorities of the global 'war on terror' with the national conditions and needs of the other countries involved in the struggle against the terror network.

    Temperature effect on drying and swelling of kappa carrageenan gels: A steady state fluorescence study

    A novel technique based on in situ steady state fluorescence (SSF) measurements is introduced for studying drying and swelling Of kappa(-) carrageenan (kappa carrageenan) gels at various temperatures. kappa(-) carrageenan gels were completely dried and then swelled in water vapor. Pyranine was embedded in kappa(-) carrageenan and used as a fluorescence probe. Scattered light intensities, I-SC and fluorescence intensities, I were monitored during the drying and swelling Of kappa(-) carrageenan gels. it was observed that the fluorescence intensity decreased linearly as drying time was increased. A simple model consisting of Case II diffusion was used to quantify the drying processes of the kappa(-) carrageenan gels. This moving boundary model provided packing constant, kappa(o). During swelling, fluorescence intensity increased exponentially as time is increased. The increase in I, was modeled using Li-Tanaka equation from which swelling time constants, tau(c) and cooperative diffusion coefficients, D-c were determined. It was observed that swelling time constants, tau(c) decreased and diffusion coefficients, D-c increased as the swelling temperature was increased. Activation energies for drying and swelling were also obtained and found to be 53.9 and 47.2 kJ mol(-1), respectively.

    Adaptive identification and equalization of magnetic recording channels

    A new RLS adaptive Volterra filter is presented. The nonlinear filtering problem is transformed into an equivalent multichannel, but linear, filtering problem. The multichannel input signal is completely orthogonalized using sequential processing multichannel lattice stages. Thus, a fast convergent, highly modular and, simple filter with good numerical properties is designed. In the identification of magnetic recording channels, the filter identifies the channels directly and parameters for the channel nonlinearity are quantified simultaneously. In the equalization of magnetic channels, the most effective equalizer length can be assigned dynamically.

    Time evolution of film formation from polystyrene particles: a percolation approach

    This work reports the film formation process from surfactant-free polystyrene (PS) latex particles. Steady state fluorescence and photon transmission techniques were used to study the evolution of film formation. The films were prepared from fluorescein (F)-labeled PS latex particles at room temperature and annealed in 2.5-min-time intervals above the glass transition temperature (T-g) of PS. Fluorescence intensity (I-F) from F was measured after each annealing step to monitor the stages of film formation. Evolution of transparency of latex films was monitored by using the photon transmission intensity, I-tr. Drastic increase in I-tr and I-F above the critical annealing times t(r) and t(c) respectively, were attributed to the percolation behavior of the PS material. Critical exponents, beta, of percolation clusters were measured and found to be around 0.31 and 0.37 for Itr and IF measurement, respectively, which were attributed to the site percolation model.

    Monovalent and divalent cation effects on phase transitions of iota-carrageenan

    Phase transitions Of L-carrageenan in a variety of monovalent (Li, Na, K) and divalent (Mg, Ca, Sr) cation solutions were studied during heating and cooling by using photon transmission technique. Photon transmission intensity (I-tr) was monitored against temperature to determine the transition temperatures and activation energies during the heating and cooling processes in the monovalent and divalent systems. Three distinct transition regions were observed during the heating and cooling cycles for the carrageenan-divalent salt system. At the first step of the heating process, dimer groups were transformed into dimers that presented (g-d) transitions, then these dimers were directly converted into a double helix by undergoing a (d-h) transition. In the higher temperature region, a double helix-to-coil (h-c) transition took place. During the cooling process, these transitions are arranged in the order of (c-h), (h-d), and (d-g). The carrageenan-monovalent salt system presented only coil-to-rod-like helix (c-r) and rod-like helix-to-coil (r-c) transitions during the cooling and heating processes, respectively. A hysteresis was observed between (r-c)-(c-r) and (g-d)-(d-g) transitions for the monovalent and divalent cations, respectively.
