Yayın Placing STS in and through Turkey(Soc Social Studies Science, 2023-03-02) Alkan, Aybike; Kaşdoğan, Duygu; Maral, ErolWhy and how does it matter to undertake an STS praxis in a country where the field lacks adequate institutional recognition and capacity? This article investigates this question by tracing multiple, fragmented and contingent stories of placing STS in and through Turkey. At first sight, discontinuous stories of STS programs established in universities and unrecognized nature of STS as a discipline by the Council of Higher Education draw attention to the "underdeveloped" nature of the field in this country. This article counters such a perspective by rendering visible the works that support STS ethos as well as loose institutions within which STS is expected to flourish. By following people and artifacts in institutional and more-than institutional places of STS, this article acknowledges the efforts both to translate STS into the particular places of Turkey and to use STS as an intellectual space through which technoscientific knowledge can be questioned and translated into the local contexts of the country. The analysis of these translation efforts reveals that STS can be thought of as a space that enables one to be attuned to the sensibilities and realities of the country and search for ways to democratize the processes of technoscientific knowledge production whether it be in the universities or in public spaces.Yayın The effect of the interaction between autistic traits and psychotic proneness on empathy: a cross-sectional study with a non-clinical sample(Emerald Publishing, 2023-11-08) Yıldırım, ElifPurpose: Recent evidence indicates an improving effect of the co-occurrence of autistic traits and psychotic symptoms on social cognition, but there is no agreement on the effect of the interaction between autistic traits and psychotic proneness on empathy. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of the interaction between autistic traits and positive psychotic experiences on cognitive and affective empathy. Design/methodology/approach: The sample consisted of 420 adults aged between 18 and 60. Assessments were administered anonymously online. Empathic abilities were evaluated by the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI). While Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) was applied to measure autistic traits, The Community Assessment of Psychic Experience (CAPE) was used as a measurement of positive psychotic experiences. Findings: A series of regression analyses showed that although AQ and CAPE scores were not correlated with cognitive-IRI, the interaction between these scores predicted cognitive-IRI scores. It was found that the personal distress subscale of IRI was significantly associated with AQ, but this relationship was moderated by CAPE scores. Originality/value: These findings provide a different perspective on understanding social cognitive impairments in autism, which may have potential clinical implications. Findings also contribute to explaining the individual differences in empathic abilities.Yayın The dynamic relationship between technological change and employment: a comparison of youth and total employment using panel VAR approach and causality analysis(Sosyoekonomi Derneği, 2022-10) Görkey, SeldaThis study empirically examines the relationship and causality between technological change and employment by comparing youth and total employment. It covers data from 16 OECD economies from 1985 to 2018 and uses multifactor productivity (MFP) as a proxy for technological change. The findings from the general method of moments panel vector autoregression (GMM Panel-VAR) approach indicate significant and positive effects of MFP on youth and total employment, and a significant yet negative impact of youth employment on MFP. According to Panel-VAR-Granger- Causality analysis results, there is a two-way causality between MFP and youth employment and a one-way causality from MFP to total employment. Thus, this study empirically confirms the jobcreation effect of technology and finds out that the technological change and employment nexus differs for youth employment compared to that for total employment.Yayın From past to present: spam detection and identifying opinion leaders in social networks(Yildiz Teknik Univ., 2022-06-22) Altınel Girgin, Ayşe Berna; Gümüşçekiçci, GizemOn microblogging sites, which are gaining more and more users every day, a wide range of ideas are quickly emerging, spreading, and creating interactive environments. In some cases, in Turkey as well as in the rest of the world, it was noticed that events were published on microblogging sites before appearing in visual, audio and printed news sources. Thanks to the rapid flow of information in social networks, it can reach millions of people in seconds. In this context, social media can be seen as one of the most important sources of information affecting public opinion. Since the information in social networks became accessible, research started to be conducted using the information on the social networks. While the studies about spam detection and identification of opinion leaders gained popularity, surveys about these topics began to be published. This study also shows the importance of spam detection and identification of opinion leaders in social networks. It is seen that the data collected from social platforms, especially in recent years, has sourced many state-of-art applications. There are independent surveys that focus on filtering the spam content and detecting influencers on social networks. This survey analyzes both spam detection studies and opinion leader identification and categorizes these studies by their methodologies. As far as we know there is no survey that contains approaches for both spam detection and opinion leader identification in social networks. This survey contains an overview of the past and recent advances in both spam detection and opinion leader identification studies in social networks. Furthermore, readers of this survey have the opportunity of understanding general aspects of different studies about spam detection and opinion leader identification while observing key points and comparisons of these studies.Yayın God, man, and nature: life for reason and the reason behind the universe - a panentheistic approach to life of pi(De Gruyter, 2021-11-08) Edman, Timuçin Buğra; Gözen, HacerThis article intends to lay out a comparative study of Karma philosophy and literature scrutinizing Yann Martel's novel Life of Pi through a panentheistic approach. Because Karma is one of the predominant philosophies in the novel and permeates the general atmosphere, this article intends to scrutinize Yann Martel's novel Life of Pi through a panentheistic approach. Although karma is a very complex issue, since anyone committing evil acts can claim to be a mere agent of karma delivering punishment to others for sins they committed in their past lives, it is true that according to karma, our actions have consequences which affect the entirety of our lives, and this can also be seen as free will. Yet while this approach tends to focus on the action and reaction mechanisms of life, the flow of life in the universe should still be carefully contemplated, since if we believe the first story, Pi's survival not only depends on his choices, but also on the opportunities that the universe offers him. In that sense, if we are to accept God as the soul of the universe, then the universal spirit must be omnipresent and omnipotent while also capable of transforming into anything in terms of s panentheistic approach. Thus God, being greater than the universe, is the ultimate force that balances everything, and is also the biggest karma controller. For this reason, this article analyzes Life of Pi from both inductive and deductive slants to demonstrate that all roads lead to God, the omniscient.Yayın The urban and architectural characteristics of Voyvoda street from past to present(Konya Technical Univ, 2021-06) Seçmen, Serengül; Süyük Makaklı, ElifPurpose: Voyvoda Street in Galata district of Istanbul originated centuries ago at the inner walls of the medieval city and was one of the most significant of its era, which has preserved its unique character and urban identity. In the nineteenth century, it became an important financial axis for the city. This study aims to understand the factors which determined the axial character of Voyvoda Street and its urban identity. The street, which is under the influence of new dynamics is examined in relation to spatial and functional transformation. Design/Methodology/Approach: The analysis was developed by two essential components: the street and the buildings that define the character of the street by its architectural components, and their functional transformation since the nineteenth century. The axial character of the street has been evaluated due to selected criteria. The data is based on literature review, the survey of historical maps, visual materials such as photographs and gravure prints, and on-site observations. Findings: The street has been shaped and transformed by social, political, and economic developments, external and internal migrations, the influence of modernist architectural movements, urban reforms, Western innovations in transportation, and technical developments. Voyvoda Street's strong character as an axis is determined by its historical buildings, which are attached to each other continuously that form a wall defining the boundaries of the street. It is one of the essential pedestrian connections and functions as a path. Since most of the buildings lost their original functions, following the re-use for various needs, the service and cultural industries have become dominant. Although the historical characters of some buildings have been changed by new additions, the original silhouette of the nineteenth century is still dominant. Research Limitations/Implications: Visual materials and resources of some buildings were available in detail, while for some of them, the materials were limited. Originality/Value: The previous studies concentrated on urban, and architectural aspects of Galata district as a whole, whereas this study focused on the urban identity of Voyvoda Street. The street and the historical buildings that define the axial character and the image of the street by its architectural components, and their functional transformation have been analyzed.Yayın Psychometric properties of the pathological buying screener: reliability and validity study(Kare Publishing, 2021-06) Dikbaş, Ganime Tuba; Acartürk, Ceren; Akyunus, MirayObjective: The Pathological Buying Screener (PBS) is a self-report scale used to evaluate compulsive buying behavior. The aim of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of a Turkish version of the PBS in a nonclinical sample. Method: A total of 457 adult participants aged 18-64 years were enrolled in this study. Internal consistency, test-retest reliability and structure, concurrent and criterion-related predictive validity analyses were conducted to ensure reliability and validity for use of the scale with a Turkish population. As part of the validity study, all of the participants were asked to complete a battery of self-report scales: the Compulsive Buying Scale, the Brief Symptom Inventory, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-Short Form, and the PBS. In order to examine the test-retest reliability, 75 participants were asked to complete the questionnaire once again 2 weeks after the first administration. Results: The results of this study revealed that the PBS had good internal consistency and test-retest reliability. The findings supported concurrent and criterion-related predictive validity, and a 2-factor structure, consistent with the original form. Conclusion: The Turkish version of the PBS is a valid and reliable measurement tool that will add to understanding of pathological buying behavior. Yayın Comparative analysis of fragile fives with panel var models(Int Journal Contemporary Economics & Administrative Sciences, 2023-01) Demirel, Esin; Akgül, Şevket IşılThis study aims to show the similarities and differences between the fragile five classifications, which include countries that are quite different from each other, and to show whether there is a need for a different classification of fragile five, econometrically. In this context, the data set consists of old fragile five and new fragile five classifications. Seven independent variables that are thought to affect the gross domestic product of the countries have been determined. The data are annual for the period 2001-2018. Panel data analysis and Panel vector autoregression are used as a methodology in this paper, respectively. As a result of the analysis, the effects of the independent variables used in the analysis on the dependent differ in the countries included in fragile fives. Also, a change in one of the countries included in fragile fives will affect other countries. Therefore, it concluded that the variables in the models of fragile fives generally have different coefficients from each other. Based on this, it is understood that the revision of old fragile five does not conform to new fragile five, econometrically. It can be suggested as a policy implication that a different classification of fragile five is necessary.Yayın The recurrence of an Indian dream, Magic Seeds(Cyprus International University, 2021) Edman, Timuçin Buğra; Boynukara, Hasan; Gözen, HacerMagic Seeds is a work of fiction, but it also serves as a reflection of the real world, the history of India, where value judgments in a society return to their starting point only by reforming in accordance with the reconstruction of a given society. Willie, who is in search of identity and a home, finds the remedy in joining the guerrilla order. However, here, he fights through the shadow of the past, which he can never escape. The shadow of the past is the hierarchy itself, and this article explores the never-ending transformation of hierarchy, anarchism, and the search for order through the novel Magic Seeds. This article is a comparative study of the novel Magic Seeds, and history, the Naxalite movement in India from the 1960s until the early 2000s. Through the historical revolutionary Naxalite movement and a political association of the Marxist–Leninist Communist Party of India in West Bengal in 1960s, this study also reveals why an anarchic movement apparently returns to its starting point, and legs behind the decolonization or reconstruction of a society due to the deep-rooted and pre-structured hierarchy in a society by considering the terms humanization, dehumanization, hierarchy, cast system, anarchism, transformation and reconstruction.
