Yayın Modernization and gender: a history of girls' technical education in Turkey since 1927(Routledge, 2006-10) Toktaş, Şule; Cindoğlu, DilekThis article is a historical analysis of Girls' Institutes in Turkey. These schools were established in the early Republican era in order to educate girl students to gender roles compatible with modernization and with the westernization project of the Turkish state. The analysis is based upon qualitative data (including interviews and focus groups). The findings point to four trends in the history of Girls' Institutes and in the characteristics and life chances of graduates in the period 1927-70. These were (a) the shift from 'good housewife and mother' training schools to vocational schools; (b) the downgrading of the employment of graduates; (c) a shift from singleness to marriage; and (d) the redefinition of gender roles by women themselves.Yayın Anti-imperialism and Kemalism in Turkey's long sixties: Mahir Çayan's theory of revolution in context(Brill Academic Publishers, 2021-12) Ülker, ErolThis article aims to reassess the evolution of Mahir Çayan's theory of uninterrupted revolution in the context of the radical ideological currents of the long sixties in Turkey. It concentrates on Çayan's relations with the National Democratic Revolution (Milli Demokratik Devrim, MDD) movement that enjoyed a considerable degree of political and ideological authority over the youth movements starting in the second half of the 1960s. The article discusses how Çayan interpreted and attempted to revise the theory of national democratic revolution by reference to the changing characteristics of imperialism and colonial domination. Consideration is given to Çayan's critical approach towards the role of Kemalists in the anti-imperialist bloc to be formed.Yayın Local democracy online: An analysis of local government web sites in England and Wales(IGI Global, 2006-07) Pratchett, Lawrence; Wingfield, Melvin; Karakaya Polat, RabiaThis report from the field analyzes the extent to which local authorities in England and Wales have responded to the e-democracy agenda by examining their Web sites and assessing their potential to deliver democracy. The analysis of Web sites provides a powerful insight into how local government is using the Internet to promote democracy. Two aspects of Web site use are particularly significant. First, the analysis reveals the overall commitment to e-democracy in local government, as it is a measure of actual behavior rather than simply an attitudinal survey. Second, it highlights the types of democratic structure being supported and the values being emphasized in the implementation of e-democracy. It aims to explain the significant bifurcations that emerged in the field of minority rights as far as progress achieved since the slowdown of Turkey's European Union (EU) accession negotiations. The study of minority rights reform helps to suggest two points: the relevance of rational-choice institutionalism appears strong, as major legislative initiatives are normally linked with critical junctures in EU-Turkey relations and the establishment of conducive opportunity structures in Turkish politics; and reform can be also explained in terms of the prevalence of ideational frameworks that may or may not be linked with the European Union and Turkey's EU membership process. The case of minority protection provides an opportunity to think about the applicability of different theoretical tools in Turkey's Europeanization experience.Yayın Turkey's radical right and the Kurdish issue: The MHP's reaction to the "Democratic Opening"(2010-09) Celep, ÖdülTurkey's current government's 'democratic opening' project has led to a series of political discussions regarding the cause and resolve of the Kurdish issue. One major consequence of this debate has been the polarization of opinion between conservatives, represented by the ruling Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi, AKP) and nationalists, represented by the Nationalist Action Party (Milliyetçi Hareket Partisi, MHP). This study elaborates on the major reasons for MHP's opposition to AKP on the 'democratic opening.' In doing so, the study examines the historical, ideological distinctions between the two parties and their perception of ethnic and linguistic differences in Turkish society. AKP comes from a political tradition that has been relatively more accommodating towards such differences. On the contrary, MHP has roots in an ethno-nationalist and mono-culturalist ideology, which can be observed in its denial of the identity component of the Kurdish issue.Yayın The 2019 municipal elections in Turkey: a democratic earthquake(TPQ, 2019-09-08) Celep, ÖdülThe 2019 municipal election had surprising consequences for both the incumbent and opposition actors in Turkey.
