(Işık Üniversitesi, 2013-08-28) Bingöl, Erdem; Sevgi, Cüneyt; Işık Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Enformasyon Teknolojileri Yüksek Lisans Programı
The competition in today's business is getting stronger each day. Due to its proven cost reduction potential the usage of Information Technology (IT) outsourcing and the flexibility it provided are among the attractive and effective features to both SMEs (Small Medium enterprises) and large enterprises. Most enterprises with different sizes decide to transfer some or all of their IT services to outsourcing vendors. Implementing IT outsourcing has some advantages such as decreasing time required to enter a market, increasing quality, enhancing customer satisfaction, and allowing an organization to focus on its core areas. However, the use of IT outsourcing comes with many risks which need to be carefully evaluated before any engagement. This thesis surveys the recent literature for the most important risk factors inherent to the IT outsourcing such as increase in expenses, increased dependence on outsourcing firm, confidentiality and communication problems, etc. Herein, we focus on identifying the IT outsourcing usage characteristics and understanding the perception of IT outsourcing risk factors by conducting a survey in both IT companies and IT departments of the companies in Turkey. The conducted data obtained by the survey is used to discover the variance among the management levels of IT personnel, in the perceived factors that may lead to IT outsourcing risks. We analyze the survey data and portrayed the current situation of risks of IT outsourcing perceived by IT practitioners in Turkey.

Transforming Hacivat-Karagöz shadow play to an interactive-educational computer game
(Işık Üniversitesi, 2014-04-21) Öğretmen, Okan Efe; Ünel, Gülay; Işık Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Enformasyon Teknolojileri Yüksek Lisans Programı
It is a known fact that computer games are influential on cognitive performance and that they have a huge potential if used as learning tools. In this study, the aim is to design an educational computer game based on Hacivat-Karagöz play, i.e. a Turkish shadow theater play. Instead of a classic shadow theater play, the current design lets children direct the characters and tell their improvised story. The game is designed to be helpful for improving the social abilities of children and as a side benefit it can help for keeping this valuable tradition alive. In this study, the outline of this game is provided and the classic Hacivat-Karagöz characters are re-designed in 3D. The chosen interaction medium is Leap Motion. HCI of leap motion is tested and the results indicate that the designed UI is successful enough to let children simulate the basic shadow theater tools. The redesign of these 2D-shadow theater characters in 3D was one of the most challenging steps. In order to tackle the task at hand, artistic skills were found to be equally important as technical skills. Although the current design is sufficiently capable of what was initially required, the current game concept needs to be revised with people from different backgrounds in order to create a more elaborate educational tool and to take the developed concept a step further.

Information passing within social networks in health
(Işık Üniversitesi, 2013-05-29) Göknar, Bora; Ünel, Gülay; Işık Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Enformasyon Teknolojileri Yüksek Lisans Programı
In recent years, online social networks have become very popular with the vast usage of Internet connected computers, tablets and mobile devices. Social network is a social structure including individuals or organizations and different types of relationships such as friendship, common interests, work, city, etc. The main factor that separates online social networks and social networks is: in the online case, there is no face to face interaction between the nodes of the network. Since the 1970s, the role of social networks in terms of illness, distress, disease and disability; and in understanding how people identify and respond to these crises, has become a mainstay of social and behavioral science research [3]. In this thesis, we investigated trust relationships and information passing in online social networks that focus on health. There is a significant amount of related work in this area conducted on consumer choice prediction, consumer influence factors and information on eBay, Amazon and other early adapter big e-commerce Web sites all over the world. In this thesis, we particularly focused on the content of a Web site called doktorsitesi.com. This is the largest online social network in Turkey related to health that is managed by professionals. We collected data from this domain and investigated how the work on information passing in social networks can be used in this domain.

    Modelling a university as a multi-agent system
(Işık Üniversitesi, 2008-09-09) Özkan, Önder; Perdahçı, Nazım Ziya; Işık Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Enformasyon Teknolojileri Yüksek Lisans Programı
Multi-Agent systems are an approach for designing and implementing complex social organizations in the software domain. In multi-agent systems; actors that interact with the system are modeled as software entities called "agents". These software agents can show autonomous and intelligent behaviour. Also when a supporting runtime environment (or platform) is available, agents show mobility and can move between interconnected platforms that form the system. With these properties agents try to satisfy the expectations of their respective owner actors by using their knowledge and belief bases (derived from the actors). An implementation of a multi-agent system can both be used for simulation purposes (by initialising agents based on reference test data) and as an actual information system by attaching agents to real world actors. This work aims at analysing a university as a complex social system and creating a corresponding multi-agent model. In the designed model academic and administrative units and students are represented by intelligent and mobile agents that can be implemented using JADE multi-agent system development framework. To provide a satisfactory mobile environment faculties and administrative units are de ned to have their own (separate) agent platforms.
