Unnecessary bleeding, unnecessary suffering: normalcy and necessity of menstruation in promoting NovaSure (R)
    (Routledge, 2016-08) Erol Jamieson, Maral
NovaSure (R) is an endometrial ablation procedure that destroys the inner lining of uterus to stop heavy bleeding. It is performed mostly on women entering menopause who are experiencing irregular and heavy bleeding. In this article, this biotechnology, promoted for women approaching the end of their reproductive life, is analyzed. The analysis is informed by a feminist science studies and medical anthropology background. The discourse of normal' menstruation and representations of menstruation in the promotional materials for NovaSure (R) are explored through a textual analysis of the NovaSure (R) website and patient brochure. The themes in the materials analyzed include the idea of getting back to life, normal' bleeding, and having a choice among different medical procedures and interventions. The possibility of getting rid of embarrassment that accompanies heavy bleeding is also emphasized. It will be argued that NovaSure (R) contributes to the redefinition of what is natural' and necessary' by combining the unnecessary period' idea of pills such as Seasonale (R), which is aimed toward women in their reproductive years, with the unnecessary suffering' idea related to menopausal complaints. While advertising the procedure, NovaSure (R) promotional materials co-construct the ideal user for the technology and reproduce the taboos and embarrassment that accompany menstruation.

Mastery or dialectic? arendt and adorno on nature
(Taylor and Francis Ltd, 2019-10-02) Yasin, Buğra
As efforts towards reconciling the thought of Hannah Arendt and Theodor Adorno gained momentum in the last decade, it seems an array of essential discrepancies have been failing to receive due attention. This article aims to foreground and explore one particular philosophical difference which stands in the way of such endeavours, focussing on Adorno's and Arendt's conceptualization of nature. It is argued that while Adorno's philosophy is poised to redeem nature from the pangs of false enlightenment, Arendt's redefinition of political existence upholds not only the careful separation of politics from nature but also emphasizes the former's superiority. Revisiting a set of arguments raised by Adorno against fundamental ontology such as the questions of hypostasis and tautology, it is explored in what ways Arendt's conceptualization of nature as eternal recurrence markedly and perhaps irreconcilably differs from the normative import of Adorno's understanding, which emphasizes the concrete unity of nature with history

Secular but conservative? youth, gender, and intimacy in Turkey
(Routledge, 2023-01-01) Özbay, Cenk; Erol Jamieson, Maral; Bağcı, Çiğdem; Özkaplan, Nurcan
This article contributes to studies on youth in Turkey by exploring gender, sexuality, intimacy, and relationship practices among college students. Our findings show that there is change (a) towards greater gender equality; (b) about attitudes regarding family, sexuality, and romance; and (c) in understanding and experiencing gendered violence in the groups of students we examined. Progressive values appear to become more common among the participants despite the increasingly conservative tone of the political and cultural climate. However, traditional relationship patterns and norms, including the idealization of monogamous relationships, robust familial ties, and sensitivity for moral reputation, seem prevalent even though these were not associated with the ascendant politico-religious conservatism. By constituting ‘secular but conservative’ intimate selves and relations, our respondents approve the freedom and right to explore possibilities for others, and yet not immediately for themselves, as they preserve an unequivocal moral self.

Benefiting innovative capabilities of software developer/user communities in developing countries
(IEEE, 2010) Ansal, Hacer; Yıldırım, Nihan
Since technological innovation is generally considered to be a major force in global economic growth, the development of innovative capabilities in developing countries has been a very important policy issue. Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) has reshaped software technology through the creation of developer/user communities which enabled the collaboration of different parties resulting in the production of Linux and similar software projects. FLOSS user/developer community networks serve not only as "learning, reviewing, and testing" environments for developers, but they may also act as innovation networks that contribute to the improvement of the innovative capabilities of individual developers within the community. Therefore, understanding the characteristics, the motivating factors and the innovative dynamics of these developer communities will provide valuable insight into how to improve the innovative capabilities of developing countries in relation to software. The aim of this paper is to explore the characteristics of FLOSS developer communities in order to discover what benefits they may offer developing countries in generating innovative capabilities related to software. By conducting a survey in the FLOSS user/developer community in Turkey, the demographic characteristics, motivation factors and innovative characteristics of the community are explored and the question of whether these communities may act as innovation networks is examined. It is concluded that FLOSS community networks mostly serve as knowledge sharing and collaboration platforms, however, they do have the potential to evolve into innovation networks if they receive support from the local software industry and academic institutions.

Does technology management research diverge or converge in developing and developed countries?
(Elsevier Science BV, 2009-01) Çetindamar, Dilek; Wasti, Syeda Nazli; Ansal, Hacer; Beyhan, Berna
The main purpose of this paper is to understand whether the research of developing and developed countries in the technology management (TM) field converge or diverge in terms of topics, approaches, research focus, and methods. International trends are explored based on the comparison of developed and developing countries' academia, conducted through a content analysis of the main TM journals over the period of 1995-2005. The analysis of a random sample of 325 articles indicates a clear differentiation of major topics studied by developing and developed country academics. The paper ends with a call for future studies to focus more on the particularities of developing countries in order to enrich the TM literature by increasing our understanding of TM theory and its applications in developing countries.

Is it possible to define a universal technology management discipline?
(Bilgesel Yayıncılık San Tic Ltd, 2009-08) Ansal, Hacer; Aygören, Huriye; Ekmekci, Cavit Umut
Considering the diversity of needs and concerns in developed and developing countries, the evolution of technology management (TM) discipline would be expected to follow different paths to include different national experiences and unique needs of these countries. Whether this diversity is reflected in the mainstream TM research agenda is an important issue. Thus, the aim of this study is in two folds; first, to examine how the general research agenda of TM discipline has evolved in the academic research in a developing country context, namely Turkey, and next, whether this research agenda has converged or diverged with the patterns of mainstream TM research in international journals, by analyzing the Turkish academics TM publications both in the national and international scientific journals. The findings reveal that the TM discipline in Turkey indicates both divergent and convergent characteristics when compared with the results of recent studies about developed and developing countries.
