Yayın Does everyone benefit equally from self-efficacy beliefs? The moderating role of perceived social support on motivation(Sage Publications Inc, 2018-02) Bağcı Hemşinlioğlu, Sabahat ÇiğdemThis study investigated whether perceived goal support from family and friends may moderate the relationship between academic self-efficacy and motivational outcomes among early adolescent students recruited from a low-middle socio-economic status(SES) background school in Turkey (N = 319, Xa(ge) = 13.13, SD = .80). Self-report questionnaires included measures of academic self-efficacy, perceived family and friend support, and academic and career motivations. Academic self-efficacy and perceived support from family related positively to both types of motivation. Children who perceived lower family support benefited more from the positive effects of self-efficacy on motivations, whereas children with higher family support seemed to gain less (or not gain at all) from self-enhancing functions of self-efficacy. Same findings were found for peer support, but only when family support was excluded from analyses. Findings implied the need to study larger family and peer contexts under which self-efficacy beliefs may be more or less effective on motivation.Yayın Reliability, validity, and factorial structure of the Turkish version of the Empathy Quotient (Turkish EQ)(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2018-07-03) Köse, Samet; Çam Çelikel, Feryal; Kulacaoğlu, Filiz; Akın, Ercan; Yalçın, Mehmet; Ceylan, VedatOBJECTIVES: Empathy is an essential ability that allows us to tune into how others are feeling or thinking. Empathy makes it possible to resonate with others' positive and negative feelings alike so that we can thus feel happy when we vicariously share the joy of others and we can share the experience of suffering when we empathize with someone in pain. Empathy training not only promotes prosocial behaviour, but also augments positive affect and resilience, which in turn fosters better coping with stressful situations. The Empathy Quotient (EQ) is a self-report questionnaire that was developed to measure the cognitive, affective, and behavioural aspects of empathy. Here, we aimed to examine the validity, reliability, and factor structure of the EQ in a Turkish sample. METHODS: Participants were 436 mostly college students and civil servants (195 female, 241 male). Sociodemographic information, the Turkish version of the EQ, Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (MC-SDS) 33-item full version and MC-SDS 13-item shorter versions were administered. All statistical analyses were performed by using SPSS version 23 for Windows. RESULT: EQ scores were significantly higher in female participants ((X) over bar (Female)=46.45, SDFemale=0.62) compared to the male participants ((X) over bar (Male)=43.68, SD (Male)=0.56). The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the scale was 0.76, Guttman's split-half reliability coefficient was 0.61, and test-retest reliability coefficient was 0.95. A positive and statistically significant correlation was found between the Turkish EQ and MC-SDS Full version (r=0.299, p<.01) and short form of MC-SDS (r=0.273, p<.01). A three-factor solution that accounted for 25.28% of the variance observed. CONCLUSIONS: The Turkish version of the EQ has satisfactory validity, good internal and test-retest reliability with a robust factorial structure to use in a clinical population in Turkey. Moreover, as predicted, women scores were statistically significantly higher on the EQ than men. This result was consistent with a series of earlier studies reporting gender differences (female superiority) on questionnaires that measure empathy. A better knowledge of empathy will have important implications for the examination and understanding of certain neurological and psychiatric disorders, including autism, narcissistic and antisocial personality disorders, and may also provide important clues about the relevant brain circuitry underlying empathy.Yayın The use of Facebook by Turkish mothers: its reasons and outcomes(Springer, 2020-03-01) Ögel Balaban, Hale; Altan, ŞebnemObjectives: Parents use social network sites for reasons related to bridging and bonding social capital, and entertainment. The aim of the present study was to examine whether the use of Facebook by Turkish mothers and its reasons are related to mothers’ demographic characteristics, anxiety level and perceived social support. It also examined whether mothers’ Facebook use contributes to their perception of their parental role. Methods: Three hundred thirty-two middle-class Turkish mothers who reported to use Facebook completed the demographic information questionnaire, the use of social media questionnaire, the anxiety inventory, the perceived social support scale and the self-perception of parental role questionnaire. Results: Results indicated that Turkish mothers use Facebook more for reasons related to bridging social capital than reasons related to bonding social capital and entertainment. The frequency of using Facebook and the length of time having an account predicted the use of Facebook for reasons related to bridging and bonding social capital. Anxiety level predicted the use of Facebook for reasons related to entertainment. Mothers’ Facebook use was found not to be related to their self-perceived parental competence. Conclusions: The discussion of these findings in terms of Turkish culture implied the need for cross-cultural studies for a better understanding of parents’ use of social network sites.Yayın Cross-group friendships and psychological well-being: A dual pathway through social integration and empowerment(Wiley, 2018-10-01) Bağcı Hemşinlioğlu, Sabahat Çiğdem; Türnüklü, Abbas; Bekmezci, EyüpThis study investigated the associations between cross-group friendships and psychological well-being among a sample of physically disabled adults. A total of 269 disabled people (M-age=39.13, SD=13.80; 114 females, 152 males, 3 unknown) completed questionnaires including the quality of their friendships with non-disabled people, perceived majority group's attitudes towards the minority group, collective self-esteem, collective action tendencies, own outgroup attitudes, and psychological well-being. Findings demonstrated that disabled people's cross-group friendships were directly and indirectly associated with higher levels of psychological well-being via two routes: one by promoting perceived majority attitudes which consequently led to more positive own outgroup attitudes (well-being through social integration hypothesis) and the other by leading to higher levels of collective self-esteem which enhanced collective action tendencies (well-being through empowerment hypothesis). Findings offer important insights into the study of cross-group friendships in relation to the psychological well-being of stigmatized minority group members.Yayın The mediating effect of humour in relation to early maladaptive schema domains and psychological wellbeing(Klinik Psikiyatri Dergisi, 2021) Yavuz, Burak Baran; Aka, Başak TürkülerObjective: Early Maladaptive Schemas may accompany and affect different areas of life and may cause psychological problems. Therefore, psychological wellbeing may get affected negatively. Individuals prefer different ways to cope with stress caused by schemas and humour is a common method that has been used since the very early ages of humanity. Recent study examines the mediational effect of humour in relation to early maladaptive schemas and psychological wellbeing. Method: 268 individuals (181 female, 87 male) between the ages of 17 and 67 (M = 29.09, SD = 9.58) participated in the current study and the data were collected online. The study measures were Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ), The Humor Styles Questionnaire (HSQ) and the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS). Results: Correlation analyses showed that psychological wellbeing negatively associated with maladaptive humour styles, and positively associated with adaptive humour styles. Only impaired autonomy and disconnection schema domains were found in association with psychological wellbeing, both negatively. Results of the bootstrap mediation indicated that aggressive humour mediates the relationship between impaired autonomy domain and psychological wellbeing, self-enhancing humour mediates the relationship between disconnection, impaired autonomy, impaired limits and psychological wellbeing. Lastly, self-defeating humour mediated the relationship between other-directedness, unrelenting standards and psychological wellbeing. Discussion: The results indicated that humour has a mediating role in the relationship between schema domains and psychological wellbeing. Specifically, it was discussed that the mediational roles of self-enhancing, self-defeating and aggressive humour might allow the therapists to intervene subtle mediums of self-harm (i.e. maladaptive humour) or strengthen the self-help (i.e. adaptive humour) and enhance psychological wellbeing.
