    Basic design in architectural education in Turkey

    Creative activity is one of the most significant parts of architectural education. In the architectural curriculum organisation 'design studio' is the unique and preeminent subject. Freshman students encounter 'design' first in basic design course, before they know what designing incorporates. The Basic Design is the starting point of initiating creativity in architecture education. It helps each student to understand architecture as a creative and innovative practice in the first year of education. This study analyzes the characteristics of basic design course, the topics of the course contents and its significance in the architectural curriculum in Turkey as well.

    The courses of design studio are the most weighted elements in education as an essential part of interior architecture education. There are areas where thinking and design skills of the students are improved yet it is different from other courses. Increased number of students for each academic member in the project courses conducted through a mentor system has resulted in failure to sustain project-oriented education actively and reduced the productivity quality of education. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to address the educational methods applied in various forms in the design studio courses of Interior Architecture departments in Turkey.

    İstanbul’daki yüksek binalarda çatı ve teras bahçelerinin tasarım yaklaşımları ve kullanıcı açısından değerlendirilmesi

    Avrupa’da 1960’lı yıllardan sonra, Türkiye’de ise 21. yüzyıl itibariyle çatı ve teras bahçeleri, özellikle büyükşehirlerdeki yüksek binalarda dikkat çekmeye başlamıştır. Bu çalışmanın amacı; İstanbul’daki yüksek binaların çatı ve teras bahçelerinin tasarım yaklaşımlarıyla birlikte kullanıcı açısından değerlendirilmesi yapılmıştır. Literatürde konuyla ilgili pek çok çalışma bulunmasına rağmen, kullanıcı değerlendirilmesi açısından merkeze alan yeterli sayıda araştırma olmadığı tespit edilmiştir. Buna bağlı olarak araştırma için; yüksek binalardaki çatı ve teras bahçelerinin kullanıcıya park ve bahçeler gibi dış mekân deneyimi sunması konu olarak seçilmiştir. Çalışma nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden, betimsel durum analizi kullanılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırma kapsamında birinci eksende yüksek binalar, ikinci eksende çatı ve teras bahçeleri, üçüncü eksende İstanbul’daki yüksek binalarda çatı ve teras bahçeleri örneklerle incelenmiştir. İncelenen yüksek binalardaki çatı ve teras bahçelerinin kullanıcı açısından tercih edilme sebepleri, kullanım alanları, kullanıcı deneyimi üzerinden tartışılmıştır. Araştırma sahası olarak erişim kolaylığı bakımından İstanbul’daki; Akasya Acıbadem Konutları, Zorlu Center, Kanyon Residence ve Torun Center’da yer alan çatı ve teras bahçeleri incelenmiştir.

    Referential interpretation of vernacular heritage in recent architectural design

    This research is designed to look for the influences of vernacular heritage in contemporary architecture, using different design actions; imitation, bricolage, analogies, interpretation and mimesis. In order to search for the possible effect of vernacular heritage on contemporary architectural practice, seventeen cases have been analyzed with interviewing architects. The data collection method has been chosen carefully and applied in several different ways: literature review, digital documents, observations, sketches and scaled drawings; semi-structured interviews with the designer in order to catch their intentions in case studies. The result of the research showed that the Anatolian vernacular archetypes are being used by the architects in their practices via different level of referential interpretations, design actions. The research goes beyond simple subjective observations of using archetypes; this has been achieved through the development of framework for the systematic classification and analysis of a range of reference types and used both in the interpretation of visual material and in the analysis of documentary sources and interviews with architects. The intentions of each architect have been identified in case studies.
