Yayın Developing an effective maintenance policy for control gates in hydroelectric power plants(IEOM Society, 2018) Aktel, Mehmet Burak; Özgür Ünlüakın, DemetEnergy consumption has been increasing rapidly in the world. That is why production of energy from renewable resources is getting more and more important today. Hydroelectric power is the largest source of renewable electricity generation in the world. Countries that have large resources of hydropower use hydroelectricity as a base load energy source because of its secure and reliable energy production. Maintenance scheduling in energy production plants is very crucial since any unexpected malfunction leads to very serious economic losses. It is essential to decide how and when to perform maintenance activities for power plants, especially if they are among base load electricity producers. The control gates are one of the vital components in hydroelectric power plants which control the movement of water. In this study, we formulate the maintenance problem of control gates using Markov Decision Processes. Our aim is to find an optimum maintenance policy for the gates by considering maintenance related losses such as equipment cost, lost sales and time spent during maintenance. We create and analyze different scenarios based on the physical conditions of the plant and cost structures.Yayın Optimal investment levels to eliminate inventory inaccuracy in a two-level supply chain(Istanbul Technical Univ, 2007) Uçkun, Canan; Karaesmen, Ahmet Fikri; Savaş, SelçukInventory inaccuracy is a major problem in supply chains. RFID technology is anticipated to alleviate this problem at the expense of the required hardware and software investment. For a supply chain consisting of single supplier and multiple warehouses, we investigate the optimal levels of investment in order to decrease inventory inaccuracy. The analysis yields in-sights on the relative benefits of RFID implementation depending on factors such as demand and inaccuracy variability, financial parameters and supply chain structure.Yayın Maintenance policy simulation for a factored partially observable system(The Society for Modeling and Simulation International, 2019-07) Özgür Ünlüakın, Demet; Kıvanç, İpekTaking maintenance decisions is one of the well-known stochastic sequential decision problems under uncertainty. Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDPs) are powerful tools for such problems. Nevertheless, POMDPs are rarely used for tackling maintenance problems of multi-component systems because their state spaces grow exponentially with the increasing number of components. Factored representations have been proposed for POMDPs taking advantage of the factored structure already available in the nature of the problem. Our aim in this study is to show how to formulate a factored POMDP model for the maintenance problem of a multi-component dynamic system and how to simulate and evaluate the obtained policy before implementing it in real life. The sensitivity of the methodology is analyzed under several cost values, and the methodology is compared to other predefined policies. The results show that the policies generated via the POMDP solver perform better than the predefined policies.Yayın Probability distributions and variances of quadratic loss functions(2006) Benneyan, James C.; Aksezer, Sezgin ÇağlarThe use of quadratic loss functions has been advocated in quality engineering and experimental design for process optimization and robust design. We derive theoretical density functions and variances for nominal-the-best, smaller-the-better, and larger-the-better quadratic loss functions in general and when the response variable has a specified distribution. While considerable attention has been given to individual and mean loss, in some applications it is of interest also to know something about the loss distribution and variance. Results frequently exhibit high variance and skew and unique density functions in cases for which it is not advisable to base decisions on expected loss alone.Yayın Statistical analysis of bus transportation networks of Istanbul(World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd, 2016) Çoban, Veysel; Atan, Sabri TankutTransportation networks such as railway, airport and bus networks are the real-world networks whose inherent statistical properties characterize and differentiate the networks. In order to understand the network characteristics of bus transportation networks (BTNs) of Istanbul, we analyzed its network properties such as degree distributions, clustering coefficients and assortativity. BTNs of Istanbul is defined into three networks as the existence and nonexistence of the metrobus and existence of third- bridge. They are also graphically represented within C-, L- and P-Space topologies that are defined with the connection of the bus stops or routes. Statistical results obtained from network properties reflected the characteristics of the BTNs of Istanbul and give an information about the effects of the metrobus lines and third bridge on the BTNs in Istanbul.Yayın MUNICIPAL: A decision technology for the restoration of critical infrastructures(Institute of Industrial Engineers, 2013) Loggins, Ryan A.; Wallace, William Al; Çavdaroğlu, BurakThis paper describes the decision technology MUNICIPAL (Multi-Network Interdependent Critical Infrastructure Program for the Analysis of Lifelines). This technology supports decision makers in the restoration of critical infrastructure systems after an extreme event. MUNICIPAL consists of four components: a vulnerability simulator which predicts damage to infrastructure components given a specific disaster scenario, an optimization module which produces a restoration plan given a damage scenario, a GIS interface to visualize and manipulate the data, and a database structured to support the data needs and integration of the other three modules. A case study was developed with the emergency management department of New Hanover County, North Carolina, to assess the technology with respect to the impact of a hurricane.
