    The impact of expectations on the co-integration relationship between the stock and REIT markets

    This paper examines if expectations have a significant impact on the co-integration relationship between stock and real estate investment trust markets. We use two widely followed expectation indicators which are the US yield spread and the expected US stock market volatility (VIX) to test this hypothesis. The US yield spread is decomposed into two components which are the expected short-term interest rate (EF) and a variable term premium (TP) using Hamilton-Kim algorithm. A dataset covering ten developed markets is used. Using co-integration score analysis our findings indicate that expected US short-term interest rates and expected US stock market volatility have a statistically significant and positive impact on the global co-integrations of different countries. This effect is especially valid in the post-global financial crisis period. The expectation-based indicators EF and VIX, however, do not seem to have a significant impact on co-integration at regional and local levels.

    Optimisation of pedestrian detection system using FPGA-CPU hybrid implementation for vehicle industry

    Improved image processing and developing technologies are rapidly expanding the application areas of image processing systems. In recent years, pedestrian detection systems have become one of the major safety technologies used in the automotive industry. This paper presents an optimised real-time pedestrian detection system using an FPGA-CPU based hybrid design. The histograms of oriented gradients (HOG) algorithm, which is extensively used for feature extraction in pedestrian detection applications, was implemented on a low-end FPGA. In the study, the original HOG descriptors are designed in low complexity without sacrificing performance. The obtained features were classified on a low-power single board computer with support vector machine (SVM). Tests with the INRIA pedestrian database show that the proposed model has high potential for use as a real-time low-cost pedestrian detection system in practice.

    Development of acoustic and thermal insulation materials from pantyhose waste

    Population growth, urbanization, industrialization, developing technology, increasing welfare level and changing consumption habits cause solid wastes to increase day by day. There are also sub-waste groups that have not yet been fully recognized among the solid waste groups in which textile wastes have a large share. One of them is pantyhose, which has been indispensable for modern life since the day it was presented to the consumer. These socks, which are made of polyamide and elastane fibers that are easily punctured, run and become unusable when worn once or several times, are generally thrown away after use. These pantyhose wastes, which are not biodegradable due to their raw materials, also pose an environmental risk. Within the scope of the study, thermal and sound insulation properties of carded and needle-punched pantyhose wastes are investigated. The results show that the thermal and acoustic properties of the developed material are at a sufficient level, and it has ensured that polyamide wastes, which have superior properties among thermoplastic polymers and have high economic value, are brought back into the economy.

    DAG (Dogu Anadolu Gozlemevi) telescope mount performances

    The DAG (Dogu Anadolu Gözlemevi) Eastern Anatolia Observatory is an astronomical project fully funded by Turkish Ministry of Development and the Atatürk University of Astrophysics Research Telescope (ATASAM). DAG Observatory is provided with a 4m-class optical and infrared telescope, equipped with secondary (0.76m) and tertiary mirrors which furnish the telescope with two Nasmyth foci. Since 2015, the project has seen the crucial contribution of EIE GROUP in the Design, Production and on-site Installation of the mount structure of the 4m class optical/near-infrared telescope (DAG Telescope) in contract with AMOS company. EIE GROUP is also the main contractor of the 18.6m-diameter Rotating Building (DAG Dome) at an altitude of 3170m asl on the Erzurum Plateau, Turkey. After completing a full assembly and testing in the factory, the telescope was subsequently disassembled and transported to the final installation site. Now, on-site assembly activities have been completed, and all internal acceptance tests regarding the mount structure have been conducted. This document focuses on the on-site assembly activities of the EIE Group, as well as the related internal pre-commissioning, commissioning, and functional and acceptance tests.

    Evaluation of thermal insulation and air permeability of needle-punched nonwovens recycled from waste pantyhose

    Waste amount in the textile industry is rising in tandem with rising production and consumption levels. Reusing waste is always the best option, but for some textile products, this isn't the case. A ruptured pair of pantyhose is among the one of the best examples. Due to their delicate structure, these products are easily punctured, so they are disposed of in solid waste sites after 2-3 times use. In this study, it is aimed to recycle these pantyhose waste (polyamide/elastane), and use it in the production of thermal panels, and to statistically examine the effects of varying thickness and elastane content on the thermal insulation and air permeability of this material. In order to create nonwoven structures with varying thicknesses and elastane ratios, the pantyhose wastes converted into fiber form and then into carded web by using a carding machine. Then, a needle punching technology is used for the web formation process. The Minitab software program is used to analyze changes in air permeability and thermal conductivity coefficient between the samples using a full factorial experimental design. The findings indicate that while both factors affected air permeability, only the changing thickness had a statistically significant impact on the thermal conductivity coefficient.
