Yayın Turkish sign language adaptation of the Turkish Health Literacy Scale-32(NLM (Medline), 2022-09-15) Ataseven Bulun, Mehtap; Çepni, Selden; Ermez, YusufSign language speakers are at a disadvantage in terms of health literacy due to the lack of health education materials in sign languages. Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) individuals are excluded from health literacy research due to the lack of measurement tools in their language of excellent f luency. This study aims to provide the literature with a tool that allows the measurement of health literacy among DHH individuals. The Turkish Health Literacy Scale (THLS)-32 was translated into Turkish Sign Language (TSL). After the THLS-32 was translated into TSL in video format, it was tested for validity and reliability. The translated version of the scale was administered to participants from a DHH association in Turkey who are f luent in TSL. Subsequently, a study was conducted with 207 DHH individuals. The study group was assessed in terms of their mean index scores and evaluated to have “limited health literacy” according to the THLS-32 classification. We conclude that the THLS-32 in TSL is suitable to measure health literacy in DHH individuals and to assess the impact of the health education system.Yayın Imagined contact facilitates acculturation, sometimes: contradicting evidence from two sociocultural contexts(Educational Publishing Foundation-American Psychological Assoc, 2019-10) Bağcı Hemşinlioğlu, Sabahat Çiğdem; Piyale, Zeynep Ecem; Stathi, SofiaObjective: Imagined intergroup contact has been shown to be an effective tool to improve intergroup relationships in various settings, yet the application of the strategy among minority group members and across cultures has been scarce. The current research aimed to test imagined contact effects on minority group members' acculturation strategies (contact participation and culture maintenance), perceived discrimination, feelings of belongingness, and social acceptance across three studies conducted in the United Kingdom (Study 1) and Turkey (Studies 2 and 3). Method: The sample consisted of Eastern Europeans in Study 1 (N = 63) and Kurds in Study 2 and 3 (N = 66 and 210, respectively). Participants were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 conditions (control vs. imagined contact) and completed measures of acculturation, perceived discrimination, general belongingness, and social acceptance. Results: Findings showed that while imagined contact significantly reduced perceived discrimination and culture maintenance, and increased contact participation and social acceptance among Eastern Europeans (Study 1), it reduced social acceptance and contact participation among Kurds recruited from a conflict-ridden homogeneous setting (Study 2). With a larger and more heterogeneous sample of Kurds (Study 3), these effects occurred only among those with higher ingroup identification. Moreover, in all studies social acceptance mediated the effects of imagined contact on contact participation and perceived discrimination. Discussion. Findings offer important insights about the use of the imagined contact strategy among minority group members and imply the need to take into account the context-dependent nature of contact strategies.Yayın Model adaptation for dialog act tagging(IEEE, 2006) Tür, Gökhan; Güz, Ümit; Hakkani Tür, DilekIn this paper, we analyze the effect of model adaptation for dialog act tagging. The goal of adaptation is to improve the performance of the tagger using out-of-domain data or models. Dialog act tagging aims to provide a basis for further discourse analysis and understanding in conversational speech. In this study we used the ICSI meeting corpus with high-level meeting recognition dialog act (MRDA) tags, that is, question, statement, backchannel, disruptions, and floor grabbers/holders. We performed controlled adaptation experiments using the Switchboard (SWBD) corpus with SWBD-DAMSL tags as the out-of-domain corpus. Our results indicate that we can achieve significantly better dialog act tagging by automatically selecting a subset of the Switchboard corpus and combining the confidences obtained by both in-domain and out-of-domain models via logistic regression, especially when the in-domain data is limited.Yayın Anti-tobacco control industry strategies in Turkey(BioMed Central Ltd, 2018-02-26) Keklik, Seda; Gültekin Karakas, DeryaBackground: Transnational tobacco companies (TTCs) penetrated the Turkish cigarette market due to trade and investment liberalization in the post-1980 period and eventually secured full control. Despite tobacco control policies put in place in reaction to accelerating consumption, TTCs reinforced their market power through a variety of strategies. This paper explores industry strategies that counteract tobacco control policies in Turkey. Methods: The study employs both qualitative and quantitative analyses to explore industry strategies in Turkey. Besides the content analyses of industry and market reports, descriptive analyses were conducted for the sub-periods of 1999-2015. The analyses focus on the market strategies of product innovation, advertisement-promotion, cost management and pricing. Results: Rising sales of low tar, ultra-low tar, slim, super-slim and flavoured cigarettes indicate that product innovation served to sustain consumption. Besides, the tobacco industry, using its strong distribution channels, the Internet, and CSR projects, were found to have promoted smoking indirectly. The industry also rationalized manufacturing facilities and reduced the cost of tobacco, making Turkey a cigarette-manufacturing base. Tobacco manufacturers, moreover, offered cigarettes in different price segments and adjusted net prices both up and down according to price categories and market conditions. In response to the successful effect of shifts in price margins, the market share of mid-priced cigarettes expanded while those within the economy category maintained the highest market share. As a result of pricing strategies, net sales revenues increased. Aside from official cigarette sales, the upward trends in the registered and unregistered sales of cigarette substitutes indicate that the demand-side tobacco control efforts remain inadequate. Conclusions: The Turkish case reveals that the resilience of the tobacco industry vis-a-vis mainstream tobacco control efforts necessitates a new policy perspective. Rising market concentration by TTCs and the global nature of industry strategies require that the highly profitable manufacturing and trade of tobacco products should be discouraged on a basis of international collaboration. To reduce and eventually eradicate tobacco consumption, supply-side tobacco control measures are needed along with demand-side policies.Yayın Treatment of preschool children with obsessive compulsive disorder(SAGE Publications Ltd, 2023-04) İnci İzmir, Sevim Berrin; Ercan, Eyüp SabriThe aim was to examine the clinical features of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in preschool and the effectiveness of aripiprazole with a standardized Cognitive-Behavioral Family Therapy (CBFT) in the treatment of preschoolers with OCD. Twelve preschool children, 36–72 months of age were diagnosed with OCD according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the Fifth Edition criteria by a fellowship-trained child and adolescent psychiatrist. They were evaluated with Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children Present and Lifetime version and Childhood Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (CY-BOCS) at baseline, at the end of the 12th and 24th weeks of treatment. The baseline mean of total CY-BOCS score decreased from 33.67 to 13.83 at the 12th week and 5.58 at the end of the 24th week of treatment. Also, 66.7% of them had at least one psychiatric comorbidity. Overall, this study revealed the effect of aripiprazole with CBFT in preschool-aged children with OCD. Also, the presence of comorbidity that is seen frequently in preschoolers with OCD may complicate the treatment. Therefore, there is a need to increase awareness of OCD and its comorbidities in preschoolers to supply treatment at an early age.Yayın Associations among adolescents' mindfulness, sympathy, cognitive empathy, and sibling relationships(Sage Publication, 2024-02) Barata, Özge; Acar, İbrahim Hakkı; Bostancı, SelenIn the current study, we examined the direct and indirect paths from mindfulness to adolescents’ sibling relationships through their cognitive empathy and sympathy. The sample consisted of 220 adolescents (50.9 % female) between age of 13 and 17 years (M = 15.86, SD = 0.91). Participants reported their mindfulness (acceptance and awareness), cognitive empathy and sympathy, and sibling relationships. The parallel mediation model revealed that mindful awareness and acceptance predicted kindness, involvement, and empathy within sibling relationships through sympathy. In addition, there was a significant indirect effect of mindful awareness to empathy in sibling relationships through cognitive empathy. Findings provided information regarding the importance of indirect contributions of mindfulness to sibling relationships through cognitive empathy and sympathy.Yayın The comparison of psychological factors and executive functions of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome to ADHD and ADHD comorbid with Oppositional Defiant Disorder(SAGE Publications Inc., 2024-10) İnci İzmir, Sevim Berrin; Aktan, Zekeriya Deniz; Ercan, Eyüp SabriObjective: The study aims to examine family functionality, emotion regulation difficulties, preference for loneliness, social exclusion, internalizing and externalizing disorders, and executive functions in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome (CDS) and compare with ADHD, and ADHD+ Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Method: This study included 842 children aged 8–12 years. The subjects were categorized according to DSM-V as ADHD (n = 246), ADHD + ODD (n = 212), ADHD + CDS (n = 176), and Control group (n = 207). The solitude and social exclusion, difficulties in emotion dysregulation and Barkley SCT scales, Child Behavior Checklist, family assessment device, and Central Vital Signs (CNSVS) test were used. Results: According to the study, children with ADHD + CDS had higher rates of internalizing disorders. They also preferred being alone and experienced more difficulty communicating with their parents and solving problems within the family. Additionally, these children had difficulty recognizing and understanding the emotional reactions of others. The ADHD + ODD group presented a poorer performance on CNSVS domain tests except for the psychomotor speed test than other groups. Also, ADHD + CDS children had the lowest psychomotor speed scores and lower scores on reaction time and cognitive flexibility than pure ADHD children. This study aimed to explore the relationship between blood pressure parameters such as mean arterial pressure (MAP), pulse pressure (PP), and cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) and cognitive performance in patients with AD, normal-tension glaucoma (NTG), and healthy controls. We hypothesized that NTG patients, like those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), may experience subtle cognitive changes related to vascular dysregulation. Methods: Ninety-eight participants (35 NTG, 17 AD, 46 controls) were assessed for CPP, MAP, OPP, and cognitive performance. Statistical analyses compared groups and examined correlations. Results: AD patients showed lower CPP and MAP (p < 0.001), indicating systemic vascular dysfunction, while NTG patients had higher ocular perfusion pressure (OPP) (p = 0.008), suggesting compensatory mechanisms. CPP correlated with visuospatial abilities in AD (r = 0.492, p = 0.045). MAP correlated with the Clock drawing test (CDT) scores in the NTG group (r = 0.378, p = 0.025). PP negatively correlated with cognition in AD (r = −0.527, p = 0.016 for CDT scores) and controls (r = −0.440, p = 0.002 for verbal fluency and r = −0.348, p = 0.019 for total ACE scores). Conclusions: The study highlights distinct hemodynamic profiles: systemic dysfunction in AD and localized dysregulation in NTG. Traditional invasive methods for ICP pulse wave monitoring pose significant risks, highlighting the need for non-invasive alternatives. This pilot study investigates a novel non-invasive method for monitoring ICP pulse waves through closed eyelids, using a specially designed, liquid-filled, fully passive sensor system named ‘Archimedes 02’. To our knowledge, this is the first technological approach that enables the non-invasive monitoring of ICP pulse waveforms via closed eyelids. This study involved 10 healthy volunteers, aged 26–39 years, who underwent resting-state non-invasive ICP pulse wave monitoring sessions using the ‘Archimedes 02’ device while in the supine position. The recorded signals were processed to extract pulse waves and evaluate their morphological characteristics. The results indicated successful detection of pressure pulse waves, showing the expected three peaks (P1, P2, and P3) in all subjects. The calculated P2/P1 ratios were 0.762 (SD = ±0.229) for the left eye and 0.808 (SD = ±0.310) for the right eye, suggesting normal intracranial compliance across the cohort, despite variations observed in some individuals. Physiological tests—the Valsalva maneuver and the Queckenstedt test, both performed in the supine position—induced statistically significant increases in the P2/P1 and P3/P1 ratios, supporting the notion that non-invasively recorded pressure pulse waves, measured through closed eyelids, reflect intracranial volume and pressure dynamics. Additionally, a transient hypoemic/hyperemic response test performed in the upright position induced signal changes in pressure recordings from the ‘Archimedes 02’ sensor that were consistent with intact cerebral blood flow autoregulation, aligning with established physiological principles. This study investigates the functional connectivity (FC) patterns associated with distinct symptom clusters, aiming to elucidate the heterogeneity in PD and uncover the neural mechanisms underlying its motor and cognitive symptoms. Resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) data from 55 non-demented PD patients and 24 healthy controls (HC) were used to perform seed-to-seed FC analyses. A clustering algorithm was applied to the cognitive and motor scores of all PD patients to generate relatively homogeneous symptomatic subgroups. PD patients exhibited a general decrease in FC within a network comprising the sensorimotor network (SMN) and the visual network (VN) regions. Symptom-based clustering revealed three relatively homogeneous subgroups, exhibiting a gradient pattern: patients with greater motor deficits showed significant disconnection within the SMN, whereas patients with greater visuospatial deficits exhibited reduced FC in an extended subnetwork, with pronounced disconnections between the VN and SMN areas. Our study demonstrated a notable disconnection between the SMN and VN, indicating impaired visual-motor integration in PD. Stronger disconnection within the SMN was associated with greater motor dysfunction, and stronger visual-sensorimotor disconnections were associated with greater visuospatial deficits. These findings suggest that at least two separate routes of functional disconnection may be responsible for the inhomogeneous symptom distribution in PD.
