Classical linearized theory of elastic waves in initially stressed bodies for small deformations is used and the well-known WKB high-frequency asymptotic technique is applied for the theoretical derivations. Numerical results on the action of the influence of the initial stresses on the wave propagation velocity for a geophysical example are presented and discussed.Yayın Placing STS in and through Turkey(Soc Social Studies Science, 2023-03-02) Alkan, Aybike; Kaşdoğan, Duygu; Maral, ErolWhy and how does it matter to undertake an STS praxis in a country where the field lacks adequate institutional recognition and capacity? This article investigates this question by tracing multiple, fragmented and contingent stories of placing STS in and through Turkey. At first sight, discontinuous stories of STS programs established in universities and unrecognized nature of STS as a discipline by the Council of Higher Education draw attention to the "underdeveloped" nature of the field in this country. This article counters such a perspective by rendering visible the works that support STS ethos as well as loose institutions within which STS is expected to flourish. By following people and artifacts in institutional and more-than institutional places of STS, this article acknowledges the efforts both to translate STS into the particular places of Turkey and to use STS as an intellectual space through which technoscientific knowledge can be questioned and translated into the local contexts of the country. The analysis of these translation efforts reveals that STS can be thought of as a space that enables one to be attuned to the sensibilities and realities of the country and search for ways to democratize the processes of technoscientific knowledge production whether it be in the universities or in public spaces. Yayın The effect of the interaction between autistic traits and psychotic proneness on empathy: a cross-sectional study with a non-clinical sample(Emerald Publishing, 2023-11-08) Yıldırım, ElifPurpose: Recent evidence indicates an improving effect of the co-occurrence of autistic traits and psychotic symptoms on social cognition, but there is no agreement on the effect of the interaction between autistic traits and psychotic proneness on empathy. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of the interaction between autistic traits and positive psychotic experiences on cognitive and affective empathy. Design/methodology/approach: The sample consisted of 420 adults aged between 18 and 60. Assessments were administered anonymously online. Empathic abilities were evaluated by the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI). While Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) was applied to measure autistic traits, The Community Assessment of Psychic Experience (CAPE) was used as a measurement of positive psychotic experiences. Findings: A series of regression analyses showed that although AQ and CAPE scores were not correlated with cognitive-IRI, the interaction between these scores predicted cognitive-IRI scores. It was found that the personal distress subscale of IRI was significantly associated with AQ, but this relationship was moderated by CAPE scores. Originality/value: These findings provide a different perspective on understanding social cognitive impairments in autism, which may have potential clinical implications. Findings also contribute to explaining the individual differences in empathic abilities.Yayın Head-on collision of the solitary waves in fluid-filled elastic tubes(Işık University Press, 2018-04-12) Özden, Ali Erinç; Demiray, HilmiIn the present work, by employing the field equations given in [15] and the extended PLK method derived in [9], we have studied the head-on collision of solitary waves in arteries. Introducing a set of stretched coordinates which include some unknown functions characterizing the higher order dispersive effects and the trajectory functions to be determined from the removal of possible secularities that might occur in the solution. Expanding these unknown functions and the field variables into power series of the smallness parameter epsilon and introducing the resulting expansions into the field equations we obtained the sets of partial differential equations. By solving these differential equations and imposing the requirements for the removal of possible secularities we obtained the speed correction terms and the trajectory functions. The results of our calculation show that both the evolution equations and the phase shifts resulting from the head-on collision of solitary waves are quite different from those of Xue [15], who employed the incorrect formulation of Su and Mirie [4]. As opposed to the result of previous works on the same subject, in the present work the phase shifts depend on the amplitudes of both colliding waves.Yayın The dynamic relationship between technological change and employment: a comparison of youth and total employment using panel VAR approach and causality analysis(Sosyoekonomi Derneği, 2022-10) Görkey, SeldaThis study empirically examines the relationship and causality between technological change and employment by comparing youth and total employment. It covers data from 16 OECD economies from 1985 to 2018 and uses multifactor productivity (MFP) as a proxy for technological change. The findings from the general method of moments panel vector autoregression (GMM Panel-VAR) approach indicate significant and positive effects of MFP on youth and total employment, and a significant yet negative impact of youth employment on MFP. According to Panel-VAR-Granger- Causality analysis results, there is a two-way causality between MFP and youth employment and a one-way causality from MFP to total employment. Thus, this study empirically confirms the jobcreation effect of technology and finds out that the technological change and employment nexus differs for youth employment compared to that for total employment.Yayın From past to present: spam detection and identifying opinion leaders in social networks(Yildiz Teknik Univ., 2022-06-22) Altınel Girgin, Ayşe Berna; Gümüşçekiçci, GizemOn microblogging sites, which are gaining more and more users every day, a wide range of ideas are quickly emerging, spreading, and creating interactive environments. In some cases, in Turkey as well as in the rest of the world, it was noticed that events were published on microblogging sites before appearing in visual, audio and printed news sources. Thanks to the rapid flow of information in social networks, it can reach millions of people in seconds. In this context, social media can be seen as one of the most important sources of information affecting public opinion. Since the information in social networks became accessible, research started to be conducted using the information on the social networks. While the studies about spam detection and identification of opinion leaders gained popularity, surveys about these topics began to be published. This study also shows the importance of spam detection and identification of opinion leaders in social networks. It is seen that the data collected from social platforms, especially in recent years, has sourced many state-of-art applications. There are independent surveys that focus on filtering the spam content and detecting influencers on social networks. This survey analyzes both spam detection studies and opinion leader identification and categorizes these studies by their methodologies. As far as we know there is no survey that contains approaches for both spam detection and opinion leader identification in social networks. This survey contains an overview of the past and recent advances in both spam detection and opinion leader identification studies in social networks. Furthermore, readers of this survey have the opportunity of understanding general aspects of different studies about spam detection and opinion leader identification while observing key points and comparisons of these studies.Yayın Just a progressive step: women’s empowerment in Turkish microcredit practices(Universidad de Granada, 2019-12-15) Soykut Sarıca, Yeşim Pınar; Çağlı Kaynak, Elif; Bal, EsraIn developing countries, the economic potential of women has long been under-utilized as a means of lifting households and communities out of poverty. In this respect, microcredit schemes offer an innovative form of social welfare, widely accessible to women. This study examines one such program from the Turkish context: the Maya Enterprise for Micro Finance, a conditional credit opportunity for women to start and/or develop their own businesses, granted by the Foundation for the Support of Women's Work (KEDV). Our study aimed to explore the impact of KEDV's credit transfer scheme on the lives of users, especially in terms of the psychological and economic empowerment of women. Deploying a mixed methods research strategy, we administered and analyzed quantitative surveys (n=336) in order to determine the perceptions, thoughts, insights and reactions of KEDV program users, also conducting qualitative interviews with 21 participants. Our findings indicate that the program was influential in empowering women by increasing their self-confidence and changing their relationship with other people in the household.
