Yayın Asymptotic solutions of love wave propagation in a covered half-space with inhomogeneous initial stresses G(3)(1)(Işık University Press, 2015) Hasanoğlu, Elman; Negin, MasoudThe dispersive behavior of Love waves in an elastic half-space substrate covered by an elastic layer under the effect of inhomogeneous initial stresses has been investigated. Classical linearized theory of elastic waves in initially stressed bodies for small deformations is used and the well-known WKB high-frequency asymptotic technique is applied for the theoretical derivations. Numerical results on the action of the influence of the initial stresses on the wave propagation velocity for a geophysical example are presented and discussed.Yayın Motif-oriented characteristics of the Turkish carpets illustrated in English aristocratic portrays of renaissance and effects of the carpets on British carpet production(Ahmet Kara, 2021-08-31) Kalyoncu, HülyaThe Turkish carpets with a great importance in world’s carpet history have their origins in Pazırık Carpet, the world’s oldest and the first knotted carpet which was produced by the Central Asian Turks. Carpet tradition of Turks was kept by the Anatolian Seljuk Empire. It had its golden age with the naturalist carpets woven in Bursa and its vicinity in the 16th century that corresponds to the Ottoman period. The Turkish carpets included in the religion and society-thematic paintings made in Renaissance period by the European painters in various countries were regarded as the expression of wealth and magnificence. The Ottoman-Turkish carpets illustrated in portraits of the English aristocrats as well influenced the English carpet art in addition to adding aesthetic values to the paintings. In this study performed in this context, literature of the portraits of English aristocrats that involve Turkish carpets was reviewed. Besides, painters of the paintings, the aristocrat’s portrayed and motif-oriented characteristics of the Turkish carpets were addressed in detail. It was aimed to reveal the place of the carpets addressed within the discipline of art history, in Turkish cultural history and their effects on the British carpet production. In conclusion, it was turned out that they place premium on Turkish culture and art.Yayın Underemployment in the Turkish labor market(Sosyoekonomi Derneği, 2017-07-31) Susanlı, Zehra BilgenUsing individual-level data from Household Labor Force Surveys for the period 2009-2015, this paper examines the determinants of underemployment in the sample of wage and salary earners in Turkey. Findings from Probit estimations indicate that the effect of gender on the likelihood of underemployment is not statistically significant, and there is a negative association between educational attainment and the likelihood of underemployment. Within the group of higher educated individuals, there are important differences across fields of study.Yayın New criteria for the existence of stable equilibrium points in nonsymmetric cellular neural networks(2003) Özcan, Neyir; Arık, Sabri; Tavşanoğlu, Ahmet VedatThis paper presents new criteria for the existence of stable equilibrium points in the total saturation region for cellular neural networks (CNNs). It is shown that the results obtained can be used to derive some complete stability conditions for some special classes of CNNs such as positive cell-linking CNNs, opposite-sign CNNs and dominant-template CNNs. Our results are also compared with the previous results derived in the literature for the existence of stable equilibrium points for CNNs.Yayın Relative effects of marketing effectiveness dimensions on firm performance: An empirical analysis with a multi-industry sample(Bogazici Universitesi, 2009) Gül, Mısra ÇağlaThe aim of this study is to understand the influence of marketing operational efficiency and marketing system effectiveness on firm performance dimensions. Marketing operational efficiency and marketing system effectiveness are two dimensions of marketing effectiveness derived as a result of the exploratory factor analysis performed on the data. Firm performance dimensions used in the study are overall performance, ROI, percentage of new product sales, change in market share, and sales growth, all measured relative to competitors. Multiple respondent firm level data are collected through a survey of 74 firms operating in a variety of industries, resulting in 296 individual surveys. Findings indicate that marketing operational efficiency, a set of short-term, operational dimensions, positively influences all of the firm performance dimensions. On the other hand, marketing system effectiveness, measuring longer-term, strategic factors, does not have such an impact.Yayın A new late holocene eolianite record from Altinkum Beach, North Cyprus(Scientific technical research council Turkey-Tubitak, 2012-06) Erginal, Ahmet Evren; Güneç Kıyak, Nafiye; Ertek, Topçu AhmetIn this study, we investigated the main depositional characteristics and obtained Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) ages of coastal eolianite on the north coast of Cyprus, where this occurrence had not previously been recorded. Based on EDX/SEM and XRD data and field observations, the studied eolianite that crops out between elevations of 1 m and 14 m a.s.l. is made up predominantly of quartz grains, most of which consist of medium- to fine-grained sand. The rock comprises aragonite, calcite and quartz with lesser amounts of bornite and hematite as accessory minerals. OSL ages indicated that the initial deposition of eolianite sands took place at 1.51 +/- 0.21 ka years ago.Yayın The dynamic relationship between technological change and employment: a comparison of youth and total employment using panel VAR approach and causality analysis(Sosyoekonomi Derneği, 2022-10) Görkey, SeldaThis study empirically examines the relationship and causality between technological change and employment by comparing youth and total employment. It covers data from 16 OECD economies from 1985 to 2018 and uses multifactor productivity (MFP) as a proxy for technological change. The findings from the general method of moments panel vector autoregression (GMM Panel-VAR) approach indicate significant and positive effects of MFP on youth and total employment, and a significant yet negative impact of youth employment on MFP. According to Panel-VAR-Granger- Causality analysis results, there is a two-way causality between MFP and youth employment and a one-way causality from MFP to total employment. Thus, this study empirically confirms the jobcreation effect of technology and finds out that the technological change and employment nexus differs for youth employment compared to that for total employment.Yayın The effect of parenting on teenagers’ decision to drop out of school(Sakarya Üniversitesi, 2018-12-29) Handanos, Daniel; Aktan, Zekeriya DenizPrevious research has indicated the gravity of both parenting and parental bond on a child's successful upbringing. In this, four main styles of parenting have been identified, known as authoritarian, authoritative, permissive and neglectful. While recent research addressed the role of parenting on academic success; additional factors include self-esteem, behavioural inhibition and behavioural activation; whereas the main types of parental bond include affectionate constraint, affectionless control, optimal parenting and neglectful parenting. The current study takes the aforementioned research one step further by examining if self-esteem, strength of goal orientation, parental bond and their parent's child rearing method has an effect on a teenagers' decision to drop out of school. Results indicated that the permissive parenting style and affectionate constraint were the best predictors of student's decision to remain in education. Additionally, participants who had decided to drop out of school displayed lower levels of self-esteem, behavioural inhibition and behavioural activation.Yayın A new novel synchronization index of brain networks in hyperbolic EEG dynamics(Sakarya Üniversitesi Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2022-06) Demirer, Rüştü MuratThe functional connectivity ofbrain connectivity changes its pattern over time i.e. dynamics, even in the resting state with an infinite number of degrees of freedom with local couplings. Recently, quantifying the level of synchrony has received considerable attention. We hypothesized that time-varying instantaneous phase synchronization over local couplings are defined in hyperbolic space and different brain regions can identify failures, flexibility, and stability in network dynamics. Our goal is to understand the phase synchronization changes of the beta-gamma band, and in addition, to investigate Shannon entropy based on phase synchronization stability. Whole EEG dynamics from local phase synchronizations was used to detect treatment resistance from both hemispheres in OCD patients. Temporal filtering and Hilbert transforms were performed to infer beta-gamma band phase difference activity from the EEG brain dynamics. Then, the response beta-gamma band phase stability was quantified using a new phase synchronization index (PSI). Results indicated significantly changed phase synchronization of the response and non-response to treatment, patients in OCD patients in F7 electrode. Greater phase fluctuations of beta-gamma synchronizations in treatment resistance OCD is claiming phase deficiencies within neural populations. This study first provides experimental and theoretical support for characterizing cycle structure depends on the non-Euclidian dynamics of neural phase synchrony caused by disturbances of underlying neurotransmitter systems, as reflected in different normal and disease states.Yayın An approximate wave solution for perturbed KDV and dissipative NLS equations: weighted residual method(Işık University Press, 2019-06-21) Demiray, HilmiIn the present work, we modified the conventional "weighted residual method" to some nonlinear evolution equations and tried to obtain the approximate progressive wave solutions for these evolution equations. For the illustration of the method we studied the approximate progressive wave solutions for the perturbed KdV and the dissipative NLS equations. The results obtained here are in complete agreement with the solutions of inverse scattering method. The present solutions are even valid when the dissipative effects are considerably large. The results obtained are encouraging and the method can be used to study the cylindrical and spherical evolution equations.
