A hybrid approach to private record matching
(IEEE Computer Soc, 2012-10) İnan, Ali; Kantarcıoğlu, Murat; Ghinita, Gabriel; Bertino, Elisa
Real-world entities are not always represented by the same set of features in different data sets. Therefore, matching records of the same real-world entity distributed across these data sets is a challenging task. If the data sets contain private information, the problem becomes even more difficult. Existing solutions to this problem generally follow two approaches: sanitization techniques and cryptographic techniques. We propose a hybrid technique that combines these two approaches and enables users to trade off between privacy, accuracy, and cost. Our main contribution is the use of a blocking phase that operates over sanitized data to filter out in a privacy-preserving manner pairs of records that do not satisfy the matching condition. We also provide a formal definition of privacy and prove that the participants of our protocols learn nothing other than their share of the result and what can be inferred from their share of the result, their input and sanitized views of the input data sets (which are considered public information). Our method incurs considerably lower costs than cryptographic techniques and yields significantly more accurate matching results compared to sanitization techniques, even when privacy requirements are high.

A novel noise robust and low bit rate speech coding algorithm
(IEEE, 2009) Güz, Ümit; Gürkan, Hakan; Yarman, Bekir Sıddık Binboğa
In this work, a new noise robust and variable length frame based speech modeling method is introduced. This method consists of three major steps which includes noise removal algorithm, coding and encoding algorithms, respectively. Coding and encoding parts are developed based on SYMPES (SYsteMatic Procedure for Predefined Envelope and Signature sequence sets). These sets have been developed in two types which represent voiced and unvoiced parts of the speech signals separately in order to obtain more efficient coding strategy and higher compression ratio while preserving the perceptual quality of the speech signals. As an extension of our previous works our new framework is not only consider the coding of the clean speech signals but also noisy speech signals. The new noise robust module suppresses the noise and delivers the clean speech signal to the newly designed modeling part. The modeling part promises higher compression ratios by switching to the more appropriate type of predefined sets take into account the voiced and unvoiced frames.

A novel biometric authentication approach using electrocardiogram signals
(IEEE, 2013) Gürkan, Hakan; Güz, Ümit; Yarman, Bekir Sıddık Binboğa
In this work, we present a novel biometric authentication approach based on combination of AC/DCT features, MFCC features, and QRS beat information of the ECG signals. The proposed approach is tested on a subset of 30 subjects selected from the PTB database. This subset consists of 13 healthy and 17 non-healthy subjects who have two ECG records. The proposed biometric authentication approach achieves average frame recognition rate of %97.31 on the selected subset. Our experimental results imply that the frame recognition rate of the proposed authentication approach is better than that of ACDCT and MFCC based biometric authentication systems, individually.
