(Işık Üniversitesi, 2013-08-28) Bingöl, Erdem; Sevgi, Cüneyt; Işık Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Enformasyon Teknolojileri Yüksek Lisans Programı
The competition in today's business is getting stronger each day. Due to its proven cost reduction potential the usage of Information Technology (IT) outsourcing and the flexibility it provided are among the attractive and effective features to both SMEs (Small Medium enterprises) and large enterprises. Most enterprises with different sizes decide to transfer some or all of their IT services to outsourcing vendors. Implementing IT outsourcing has some advantages such as decreasing time required to enter a market, increasing quality, enhancing customer satisfaction, and allowing an organization to focus on its core areas. However, the use of IT outsourcing comes with many risks which need to be carefully evaluated before any engagement. This thesis surveys the recent literature for the most important risk factors inherent to the IT outsourcing such as increase in expenses, increased dependence on outsourcing firm, confidentiality and communication problems, etc. Herein, we focus on identifying the IT outsourcing usage characteristics and understanding the perception of IT outsourcing risk factors by conducting a survey in both IT companies and IT departments of the companies in Turkey. The conducted data obtained by the survey is used to discover the variance among the management levels of IT personnel, in the perceived factors that may lead to IT outsourcing risks. We analyze the survey data and portrayed the current situation of risks of IT outsourcing perceived by IT practitioners in Turkey.

(Sosyoekonomi Derneği, 2017-07-31) Susanlı, Zehra Bilgen
Using individual-level data from Household Labor Force Surveys for the period 2009-2015, this paper examines the determinants of underemployment in the sample of wage and salary earners in Turkey. Findings from Probit estimations indicate that the effect of gender on the likelihood of underemployment is not statistically significant, and there is a negative association between educational attainment and the likelihood of underemployment. Within the group of higher educated individuals, there are important differences across fields of study.

Turkey's relations with the Iraqi and Syrian kurds: A comparative approach
(Işık Üniversitesi, 2018-09-05) Alyüz, Işın; Kayhan Pusane, Özlem; Işık Üniversitesi, Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, Uluslararası İlişkiler Yüksek Lisans Programı
This thesis examines the striking variance in Turkish foreign policy towards the Iraqi and Syrian Kurds between 2011 and 2017, during the Syrian civil war. It explains the difference in Turkish foreign policy by focusing on the impact of socially constructed identities on actor behavior with the guidance of Lene Hansen’s discursive research model. This thesis argues that constructed identities, as the foundation and product of foreign policy, have a major role in shaping the difference in the incumbent Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) foreign policy practices towards the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Democratic Union Party (PYD), as well as its armed wing People’s Protection Units (YPG). Although both the KRG and the PYD/YPG are pro-Kurdish political formations, the AKP government pursued an alliance with the former from 2007 onwards, while it identified thelatter as a national security threat. This thesis uses discourse analysis to inspect the tripartite relationship of these actors from the perspective of identity theory.

Institution-building on shop-floor employees’ representation with reference to international norms and representative industrial democracy: a first attempt to model dual-channel representation in Turkey
(Birleşik Metal İş Sendikası, 2022-10-24) Dereli, Toker; Soykut Sarıca, Yeşim Pınar; Şen Taşbaşı, Aslı; Çağlı Kaynak, Elif
This article explores the feasibility of setting up a shopfloor social dialogue mechanism in Turkey based on the synthesis of EU Directive (2002/14/EC), the German works council model and various dimensions of Turkish labour law and practice. Evaluating the outputs of the questionnaire conducted between the years 2015-2016 and addressed to selected samples of representatives of labour unions and employers’ organizations as well as to officials of the Turkish Ministry of Labour and Social Security, the article proposes two alternatives for a dual-channel representation system: namely, the establishment of works councils to co-exist with unions and the election of employee representatives. Since the majority of Turkey’s workplaces are currently unrepresented by unions, it is assumed that either option may serve the objectives of adapting Turkish labour relations to international standards and locating representative industrial democracy at the core of work life.

Unemployment and homeownership in Turkey: a preliminary analysis
(Işık Üniversitesi Yayınları, 2023-04-10) Susanlı, Zehra Bilgen
Using individual-level data, this paper aims to explore the link between homeownership and unemployment in Turkey. The Oswald hypothesis states that high homeownership is detrimental to labor market outcomes by restricting the geographical mobility of job searchers. Micro-evidence, however, indicates that homeowners have relatively favorable labor market outcomes. In contrast with the existing micro literature, the findings of this study are in favor of the Oswald hypothesis for the positive link between homeownership and unemployment probability.

Türkiye’s resolution process and its endeavor to be a regional power: prospects and constraints
(Ortadoğu Araştırmaları Derneği, 2023-12-07) Kayhan Pusane, Özlem
Scholars have examined Türkiye’s Kurdish resolution or peace process (2013-2015) from various perspectives. While some works have pursued a rational choice approach and focused on the Justice and Development Party’s (AK Party’s) government’s strategic calculations vis-à-vis the PKK in initiating a peace process and maintaining it until 2015, others have analyzed Türkiye’s experience within the framework of the confict resolution scholarship. Instead, this paper’s starting point is that the 2013-2015 resolution process was not merely a policy to end an internal conflict. Still, it constituted a key aspect of the AK Party’s ongoing endeavor to turn Türkiye into a regional power. This paper places the 2013-2015 resolution process within the framework of regional and global dynamics and argues that from the mid-2000s onwards, the AK Party’s government’s eforts to put an end to the PKK terrorism and resolve the Kurdish question in Türkiye refected the policy of a middle-power country, i.e., Türkiye, to increase its power and infuence in the region instead of a mere domestic peace process. Thus, the end of the resolution process in 2015 constrained Türkiye’s potential achievements in the Middle East and beyond.

Shifting from national channels to digital platforms: an examination of limitations on creative practices in Turkish serial production
(Ege Üniversitesi, 2020-12-30) Yörükoğlu, Ayşe; Akçalı, Elif
This study focuses on the changes in creative production practices of Turkish television serials in the last decade due to the expansion of Turkish television serial industry and the fairly concurrent launch of three video-on-demand platforms, Netflix Turkey, puhutv and BluTV. The range of genres, characters, narrative structures and stylistic choices in the serials produced for these platforms is broader compared to others that are broadcast on national television channels; whether the changes on these new screens are reflected as transformations in the production practices remains a question to be answered. This paper investigates the structures of serial production processes and their limitations on creativity by means of an outlook of an analysis of actors that affect production decisions, including producers, channels, and audiences, and interviews with the creative people who actually produce the end products.

The impact of host-country environment and headquarters on strategic human resource development practices at MNE subsidiaries : a survey from Turkey
(Işık Üniversitesi, 2007) Özçelik, Gaye; Ferman, Ali Murat; Işık Üniversitesi, Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, Çağdaş İşletme Yönetimi Doktora Programı
Today, the acceleration in globalization and competition has given rise to an increased emphasis for MNEs in managing their international human resource base. One of the most important concerns for MNE subsidiaries is whether they adapt their human resources practices to local context (local responsiveness or isomorphism) or their HR practices are similar to those of their parent company. MNEs operating in multiple countries face the pressure for taking the demands requested by country-specific environmental forces into consideration. The objective of this study is to examine the influence of MNE organizational factors, environmental factors, subsidiary characteristics and MNE characteristics on local responsiveness of strategic human resource development (SHRD) practices of overseas MNE subsidiaries{u2014}wholly foreign owned MNE subsidiaries {u2013} operating in Turkey. Considering the significant increase of FDI in Turkey and the potential of further exploration about pressures for global integration-local responsiveness of MNEs, the main objective is to investigate the distinct forces for global integration and local responsiveness and to explore the strength of the existing relationship. The study tests the influencing dimensions on the SHRD practices through considering Institutional, Resource Dependence and Contingency Theories. Moreover, the strength of the significantly observed relationships is also examined. The evidence presented showed that local responsiveness of strategic HR practices being management of performance appraisal, management of career planning and also recruitment and selection criteria are dependent on the forces imposed from MNE organizational factors (national origin, control orientation, and international strategy) and environmental factors (the subsidiary's dependence on the local context, relationship with local customers and competitors). In addition, moderating influences were found regarding certain categories of the sample. Finally, the study presented limitations and proposed recommendations for further studies.

The purpose of this study is to examine and better understand the effects of high technology manufacturing idea adoption for Turkey and South Korea. Selected countries are particularly appropriate for this analysis as they were standing at the almost similar economic circumstance many years ago. Moreover, this truth cannot be ignored: Turkey has had a definite better position, and a more hopeful development possibility right before the 1960s. It is also important to highlight that the Turkish economy and developmental progress has been impressively increased through structural state policies between 1923 and 1950. It might be right but, today's world economic development outcomes have been showing a miracle growth for South Korea; the growth rates of GDP, production, and incomes per capita have reached unprecedented heights. However, Turkey has been missing the sustainable economic development opportunities due to inefficient technology manufacturing approach and education incapability since 1960. In this parallel, South Korea has been trying to convert itself into high technology products producer country with the contemporary education system, and it's the innovated economy has already been matured to answers the world technology requirements in short period time. In today’s world, the developed countries have been preparing itself against upcoming Industrial Revolution 5.0. South Korea has not positioned itself as it possesses somethings for the paradigm change which has been approaching, it will smoothly enter a new period as it already established a required environment in the area of science and education. This paper intends to evaluate the impact of high technology of economic development on economic growth and shows whether is there a positive correlation between educational development and economic growth through empirical analysis.

(Işık Üniversitesi, 2017-10-13) Yılmaz, Kemal Özkan; Ferman, Ali Murat; Işık Üniversitesi, Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, Çağdaş İşletme Yönetimi Doktora Programı
Customer retention dynamics have been receiving attention of the academic researchers especially for the last two decades. The challenging conditions of the swiftly increasing global competition have increased the importance of the customer retention concept in order to be able to foresee and react to the changes both in the competitive off-line and on-line business environment. This dissertation focuses on the customer retention strategy formulation among the marketing top level executives and senior management of the related companies. This study is an attempt to define the creation of customer retention intensions through explaining the proposed relationships between these dimensions based on the applications and ideas of the managers working at the leading organized ready-to-wear retailers of Turkey. A model is developed and related hypotheses are constructed based on the relevant academic literature and then tested through measuring attitudes of top management executives and marketing managers of leading organized ready-to-wear retailers in Turkey, who are members of United Brands Association and both active in off-line and online channels. The survey that has been conducted within this study employs an interval scale questionnaire, which has been applied online by sending an e-mail to each respondent including the website link of the survey and a scanned signed cover letter. The research findings provide useful implications to be considered on the way to sustain customer retention. The study is an attempt to reveal the attitudes of business professionals towards formulating inter-organizational customer retention strategies within the context of the proposed model in the dissertation.
