Yayın Optimum power control for transmitter cooperation in OFDMA based wireless networks(IEEE, 2011) Bakım, İsmail Sezi; Kaya, OnurFor a cooperative orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system with two transmitters (TXs), and full channel state information (CSI), we obtain the optimal power allocation (PA) policies which maximize the rate region achievable by a recently introduced version of block Markov superposition encoding (BMSE): inter-subchannel cooperative encoding (ISCE) [1]. We provide the optimality conditions that need to be satisfied by the powers associated with the transmitted codewords. We propose two algorithms that yield the optimal power distribution: a subgradient algorithm which achieves an arbitrary rate point on the achievable rate region boundary, and an iterative waterfilling-like algorithm which maximizes the sum rate, and converges much faster. We observe that, utilization of power control to take advantage of the diversity offered by the cooperative OFDMA system, not only leads to a remarkable improvement in achievable rates, but also may help determine how the subchannels have to be instantaneously allocated to various tasks in cooperation.Yayın Cooperative strategies and achievable rates for two user OFDMA channels(IEEE-INST Electrical Electronics Engineers Inc, 2011-12) Bakım, İsmail Sezi; Kaya, OnurWe propose three encoding strategies for a two user cooperative Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) system, based on block Markov superposition encoding (BMSE). We obtain the expressions for the resulting achievable rate regions for all three encoding strategies. We show that, by allowing for re-partitioning and re-encoding of the cooperative messages across subchannels, it is possible to better exploit the diversity created by OFDMA, and higher rates can be achieved. We demonstrate potential rate gains attained by cooperative OFDMA, through simulations.Yayın Power control for fading cooperative multiple access channels(IEEE, 2007-08) Kaya, Onur; Ulukuş, ŞennurFor a fading Gaussian multiple access channel with user cooperation, we obtain the power allocation policies that maximize the average rates achievable by block Markov superposition coding, subject to average power constraints. The optimal policies result in a coding scheme that is simpler than the one for a general multiple access channel with generalized feedback. This simpler coding scheme also leads to the possibility of formulating an otherwise non-concave optimization problem as a concave one. Using the perfect channel state information available at the transmitters to adapt the powers, we demonstrate gains over the achievable rates for existing cooperative systems.Yayın Iterative channel estimation approach for space-time/frequency coded OFDM systems with transmitter diversity(Assoc Elettrotecnica Ed Elettronica Italiana, 2004-06) Çırpan, Hakan Ali; Panayırcı, Erdal; Doğan, HakanFocusing on transmit diversity orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission through frequency selective channels, this paper pursues novel iterative channel estimation approaches for both space-frequency OFDM (SF-OFDM) and space-time OFDM (ST-OFDM) systems. Relying on the unifying signal model for SF-OFDM and ST-OFDM transmitter diversity systems, we develop computationally efficient, maximum a posteriori (MAP) channel estimation algorithms according to the MAP criterion. The algorithms require a convenient representation of the discrete multipath fading channel based on the Karhunen-Loeve (KL) orthogonal expansion and estimates the complex channel parameters of each subcarriers iteratively using the expectation-maximisation (EM) method. In order to explore the performance, the closed-form expression for the average symbol error rate (SER) probability is derived for the maximum ratio combiner (MRC). Furthermore, to benchmark performance of the MAP channel estimator, the modified Cramer-Rao bound of channel estimates is also derived. Finally, we provide simulation results studying the influence of delay spread, propagation parameters and modelling mismatch on the performance of channel estimation techniques. Simulation results confirm our theoretical analysis and illustrate that the proposed algorithms are capable of tracking fast fading and improving overall performance.Yayın Channel estimation for space-time block coded OFDM systems in the presence of multipath fading(IEEE, 2002) Panayırcı, Erdal; Çırpan, Hakan AliIn this paper, a computationally efficient, non-data-aided maximum a posterlori(MAP) channel estimation algorithm is proposed for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with transmitter diversity using space-time block coding. The Alamouti's transmit diversity scheme with two transmit antennas is employed here and generalized for OFDM systems. The algorithm requires a convenient representation of the discrete multipath fading channel based on the Karhunen-Loeve orthogonal expansion and estimates the complex channel parameters of each subcarriers iteratively using the Expectation Maximization(EM) method, which converges to the true MAP estimation of the unknown channel. Ananalytical expression is derived for the Modified Cramer-Rao. lower bound of the proposed MAP channel estimator. The performance is presented in terms of the mean-square error for a system employing QPS signaling.Yayın Achieving the capacity region boundary of fading CDMA channels via generalized iterative waterfilling(IEEE, 2006-11) Kaya, Onur; Ulukuş, ŞennurWe characterize the optimum power control policies that achieve arbitrary rate tuples on the boundary of the, capacity region of a power controlled, code division multiple access (CDMA) system in a fading channel with perfect channel state information (CSI). We propose a "generalized" waterfilling approach, and provide an iterative algorithm that solves for the optimum power allocation policy, for A given arbitrary rate tuple on the boundary of the capacity region. We then investigate the effects of limited feedback on the capacity region, and demonstrate that a good power control policy may require only a very low rate feedback.Yayın Linear expansions for frequency selective channels in OFDM(Elsevier GMBH, 2006) Şenol, Habib; Çırpan, Hakan Ali; Panayırcı, ErdalModeling the frequency selective fading channels as random processes, we employ a linear expansion based on the Karhumen-Loeve (KL) series representation involving a complete set of orthogonal deterministic vectors with a corresponding uncorrelated random coefficients. Focusing on OFDM transmissions through frequency selective fading, this paper pursues a computationally efficient, pilot-aided linear minimum mean square error (MMSE) uncorrelated KL series expansion coefficients estimation algorithm. Based on such an expansion, no matrix inversion is required in the proposed MMSE estimator. Moreover, truncation in the linear expansion of channel is achieved by exploiting the optimal truncation property of the KL expansion resulting in a smaller computational load on the estimation algorithm. The performance of the proposed approach is studied through analytical and experimental results. We first exploit the performance of the MMSE channel estimator based on the evaluation of minimum Bayesian MSE. We also provide performance analysis results studying the influence of the effect of SNR and correlation mismatch on the estimator performance. Simulation results confirm our theoretical results and illustrate that the proposed algorithm is capable of tracking fast fading and improving performance.Yayın Channel modeling and characterization for VLC-based MBSNs impaired by 3D user mobility(IEEE, 2021-11-27) Dönmez, Barış; Miramirkhani, FarshadThis paper focuses on channel modeling and characterization of indoor visible light communication (VLC)-based medical body sensor networks (MBSNs) which establish links between light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and MBSNs nodes couple with photodetectors (PDs) placed on the shoulder (D1), wrist (D2), and ankle (D3) of the mobile user who walks over random trajectories in 3D scenarios of ICU ward and family type patient room. We adopt non-sequential ray-tracing to obtain channel impulse responses (CIRs) and channel characteristics over random trajectories. Based on simulation results, it is observed that channel DC gains exhibit sinusoidal behaviour for D1 and D2 except for D3 (i.e., due to the number of diffuse rays received at D3), as the user approaches and moves away from the luminaries. It is also revealed that a flat fading channel can be modeled if a data rate lower than 7.03 Mbit/s, i.e., sufficient for MBSNs applications, is chosen.Yayın Frequency selective fading channel estimation in OFDM systems using KL expansion(IEEE, 2005) Şenol, Habib; Çırpan, Hakan Ali; Panayırcı, ErdalThis paper proposes a computationally efficient, linear minimum mean square error (MMSE) channel estimation algorithm based on KL series expansion for OFDM systems. Moreover, truncation in the linear expansion of channel is achieved by exploiting the optimal truncation property of the KL expansion resulting in a smaller computational load on the estimation algorithm. The performance of the proposed approach is studied through analytical and experimental results. We provide performance analysis results studying the influence of the effect of SNR and correlation mismatch on the estimator performance. Simulation results confirm our theoretical results and illustrate that the proposed algorithm is capable of tracking fast fading and improving performance.Yayın Blind channel estimation for space-time coding systems with Baum-Welch algorithm(IEEE, 2002) Çırpan, Hakan Ali; Panayırcı, ErdalIn recent years, space-time coding is proposed to provide significant capacity gains over the traditional communication systems in fading wireless channels. In this paper, we consider the problem of blind estimation of the channel parameters along with space-time coded signals. Our proposed approach exploits the finite alphabet property of the space-time coded signals and is based on the unconditional signal model by treating the information sequence as stochastic I.I.D. sequences. The iterative Baum-Welch algorithm is then adapted to solve resulting unconditional ML optimization cost function. Finally, some simulation results are presented.
