Interactions of nonlinear acoustic waves in a fluid-filled elastic tube
(Pergamon-Elsevier Science, 2001-03) Akgün, Güler; Demiray, Hilmi
In the present work, the nonlinear interactions of two acoustical waves propagating in a fluid-filled elastic tube with different wave numbers, frequencies and group velocities are examined. Employing the multiple-scale expansion method, expanding the field quantities into asymptotic series of the smallness parameter and solving the resulting differential equations of various orders of the same parameter, we obtained two coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations. The nonlinear plane wave solutions to these equations are also given for some special cases.

Modulational instability of acoustic waves in a dusty plasma with nonthermal electrons and trapped ions
(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2019-04) Demiray, Hilmi; Abdikian, Alireza
In the present work, employing the nonlinear field equations of a hot dusty plasma in the presence of nonthermal electrons and trapped ions, we studied the amplitude modulation of nonlinear waves in such a plasma medium by use of the reductive perturbation method and obtained the modified nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The modulational instability (MI) was investigated and the effects of the proportion of the fast electrons (alpha), the trapping parameter (b) and the plasma parameters such as the dust-ion temperature ratio (sigma(d)), the partial unperturbed electron to dust density (delta), and the ion-electron temperature ratio (sigma(i)) on it was discussed. For the investigation of modulational instability problems three parameters P/Q,K-max and Gamma(max) play the central role. The variations of these parameters with the wave number k and the other physical parameters are discussed and the possibility of occurence of modulational instability is indicated.

Automatic modulation classification for mimo systems using fourth-order cumulants
(IEEE, 2012) Mühlhaus, Michael S.; Öner, Mustafa Mengüç; Dobre, Octavia Adina; Jkel, Holger U.; Jondral, Friedrich K.
Automatic classification of the modulation type of an unknown communication signal is a challenging task, with applications in both commercial and military contexts, such as spectrum surveillance, cognitive radio, and electronic warfare systems. Most of the automatic modulation classification (AMC) algorithms found in the literature assume that the signal of interest has been transmitted using a single antenna. In this paper, a novel AMC algorithm for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) signals is proposed, which employs fourth-order cumulants as features for classification. First, perfect channel state information (CSI) is assumed. Subsequently, a case of more practical relevance is considered, where the channel matrix is unknown and has to be estimated blindly by employing independent component analysis (ICA). The performance of the proposed classification algorithm is investigated through simulations and compared with an average likelihood ratio test (ALRT) which can be considered as optimum in the Bayesian sense, but has a very high computational complexity.

Modulation of nonlinear waves in a thin elastic tube filled with a viscous fluid
(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 1999-11) Demiray, Hilmi
In the present work, utilizing the nonlinear equations of a prestressed thin elastic tube filled with an incompressible viscous fluid the propagation of weakly nonlinear waves in such a medium is studied. Considering that the arteries are initially subjected to a large static transmural pressure P-0 and an axial stretch lambda(z) and, in the course of blood flow, a finite time dependent displacement is added to this initial field, the nonlinear equations governing the motion of the tube in the radial direction is obtained. Utilizing the reductive perturbation technique the amplitude modulation of weakly nonlinear and dissipative but strongly dispersive waves is examined. The localized travelling wave solution to the evolution equation is given and the stability condition is discussed.

Coupled quintic nonlinear Schrodinger equations in a generalized elastic solid
(IOP Publishing Ltd, 2004-10-08) Hacınlıyan, Irma; Erbay, Saadet
In the present study, the nonlinear modulation of transverse waves propagating in a cubically nonlinear dispersive elastic medium is studied using a multiscale expansion of wave solutions. It is found that the propagation of quasimonochromatic transverse waves is described by a pair of coupled nonlinear Schrodinger (CNLS) equations. In the process of deriving the amplitude equations, it is observed that for a specific choice of material constants and wavenumber, the coefficient of nonlinear terms becomes zero, and the CNLS equations are no longer valid for describing the behaviour of transverse waves. In order to balance the nonlinear effects with the dispersive effects, by intensifying the nonlinearity, a new perturbation expansion is used near the critical wavenumber. It is found that the long time behaviour of the transverse waves about the critical wavenumber is given by a pair of coupled quintic nonlinear Schrodinger (CQNLS) equations. In the absence of one of the transverse waves, the CQNLS equations reduce to the single quintic nonlinear Schrodinger (QNLS) equation which has already been obtained in the context of water waves. By using a modified form of the so-called tanh method, some travelling wave solutions of the CQNLS equations are presented.

Joint modulation classification and antenna number detection for MIMO systems
(IEEE, 2016-01-07) Turan, Merve; Öner, Mustafa Mengüç; Çırpan, Hakan Ali
Noncooperative classification of the modulation type of communication signals finds application in both civilian and military contexts. Existing modulation classification methods for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems commonly require a priori information on the number of transmit antennas employed by the multiantenna transmitter, which, in most of the noncooperative scenarios involving modulation classification, is unknown and needs to be blindly extracted from the received signal. Since the problems of MIMO modulation classification and detection of the number of transmit antennas are highly coupled, we propose a decision theoretic approach for spatial multiplexing MIMO systems that considers these two tasks as a joint multiple hypothesis testing problem. The proposed method exhibits a high performance even in moderate to low SNR regimes while requiring no a priori knowledge of the channel state information and the noise variance.

A low complexity modulation classification algorithm for MIMO systems
(IEEE-INST Electrical Electronics Engineers Inc, 2013-10) Mühlhaus, Michael S.; Öner, Mustafa Mengüç; Dobre, Octavia Adina; Jondral, Friedrich K.
A novel algorithm is proposed for automatic modulation classification in multiple-input multiple-output spatial multiplexing systems, which employs fourth-order cumulants of the estimated transmit signal streams as discriminating features and a likelihood ratio test (LRT) for decision making. The asymptotic likelihood function of the estimated feature vector is analytically derived and used with the LRT. Hence, the algorithm can be considered as asymptotically optimal for the employed feature vector when the channel matrix and noise variance are known. Both the case with perfect channel knowledge and the practically more relevant case with blind channel estimation are considered. The results show that the proposed algorithm provides a good classification performance while exhibiting a significantly lower computational complexity when compared with conventional algorithms.

Modulation of cylindrical (spherical) waves in a plasma with vortex electron distribution
(American Institute of Physics Inc., 2018-07-01) Demiray, Hilmi
In the present work, employing cylindrically (spherically) symmetric field equations of a plasma consisting of a cold electron fluid, hot electrons obeying a trapped/vortex-like distribution and stationary ions, we studied the amplitude modulation of electron-acoustic waves. Due to the physical nature of the problem under investigation, the nonlinearity of the field equations is of order (3/2), which causes considerable difficulty in the analysis of modulation problems. To solve this difficulty, we expanded this nonlinear term into the Fourier cosine series of the phase function and obtained the modified cylindrical (spherical) nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation. A consistent analysis for the modulational instability is presented and a criterion between the time parameter tau and the wave number K is established. In addition, motivated with the solitonic solution of modified NLS equation for planar case and utilizing the "weighted residual method," we proposed a harmonic wave of variable frequency with progressive wave amplitude to the evolution equation. It is found that the modified cylindrical (spherical) NLS equation assumes an envelope type of progressive wave solution in the sense weighted residual. The numerical results reveal that the amplitude of spherical wave is much larger than that of the cylindrical wave and that both amplitudes decrease with increasing time parameter tau. It is further observed that the wave profiles get distorted with progressing time.

Joint space time block code and modulation classification for MIMO systems
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc, 2017-02) Bayer, Özgür; Öner, Mustafa Mengüç
Non-cooperative identification of unknown communication signals is a popular research area with widespread civilian and military applications. Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems employing multi-antenna transmission pose new challenges to signal identification systems, such as the classification of the employed space time block code (STBC) and modulation in the presence of the self-interference inherent to the multi-antenna transmission. In the existing literature, these two classification problems have been handled separately, despite the fact that they are interrelated. This letter presents a novel approach to MIMO signal identification by considering the modulation type and the STBC classification tasks as a joint classification problem.
