    Topography of inland deltas: Observations, modeling, and experiments

    The topography of inland deltas is influenced by the water-sediment balance in distributary channels and local evaporation and seepage rates. In this letter a reduced complexity model is applied to simulate inland delta formation, and results are compared with the Okavango Delta, Botswana and with a laboratory experiment. We show that water loss in inland deltas produces fundamentally different dynamics of water and sediment transport than coastal deltas, especially deposition associated with expansion-contraction dynamics at the channel head. These dynamics lead to a systematic decrease in the mean topographic slope of the inland delta with distance from the apex following a power law with exponent alpha = -0.69 +/- 0.02 where the data for both simulation and experiment can be collapsed onto a single curve. In coastal deltas, on the contrary, the slope increases toward the end of the deposition zone.

    Preliminary TL and OSL investigations of obsidian samples

    Obsidian is a volcaniclastic mineral extremely hard to break, which was used in prehistoric Greece (and elsewhere in the World), in order to provide tools, weapons, knives and arrowheads. The present work aims to characterize this extremely precious tool stone by using both thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) techniques and investigate its potential use for luminescence dating purposes. Basic TL and OSL properties, such as TL and OSL thermal and optical stability, repeatability, TL and LM-OSL glow curve shape and mainly the linearity of the TL and OSL signals as a function of beta dose were investigated. Artificially irradiated samples indicate all promising luminescence features, such as the 110 degrees C TL peak and dose response sub-linearity for intermediate doses, quick and effective bleaching all over the entire TL glow curve, along with quite linear CW-OSL dose response for doses larger than 5 Gy. The lack of predose sensitisation indicates the suitability of the material for single aliquot measurements. Furthermore, several features provide indications that the signal does not relate to quartz, but in fact to other silicates. Unfortunately, both lack of bleaching ability for NIL signal, along with a peculiar shape of NOSL, provide major difficulties in dating applications.

    Sustainability via extended warranty contracts: design for a consumer electronics retailer

    Warranty is one of the most important attributes of any product, from both manufacturer and consumer points of view. Although the retailers connect manufacturers to customers by selling goods, traditionally, they have isolated themselves from warranty-related matters such as customer complaints and maintenance costs. However, recent trends in consumer behavior toward extended warranty contracts have changed this approach. While retailers have started to generate considerable revenue from the sale of these contracts, sustainability is also achieved by longer product life cycles. This study analyzed the failure behavior of different classes of cell phone products and their related costs through a chain of consumer electronics retailer operating in Türkiye. To compete on pricing and customer service, a novel policy was designed for the retailer to honor the contracts in house rather than underwriting to a third party insurer as the industry standard. The maintenance records of 328 previous failures were analyzed to plot a failure model. Failure mode and effects analysis was carried out to identify failure classes and the respective costs for extended warranty design for cell phones. The expected warranty costs for coverage of the third, fourth, and fifth years of operation were determined. The results show that the retailer may achieve the same level of profit by increasing customer satisfaction along with the sustainability of the product through repair actions.

    RETRACTED: Efficiency analysis of the dynamic traffic control for an urban highway (Retracted article. See 185, 2016)

    In this study, dynamic traffic control strategies, namely dynamic ramp metering and dynamic speed limit control, have been examined through microscopic traffic simulation based on site measurements. In this context, the traffic flow data at a particular highway intersection have been analyzed to determine the pattern of the traffic. Then, the traffic model has been built in a traffic micro-simulation software and calibrated with the field data. The foci of the study are to measure the efficiency of the dynamic traffic control strategies and to compare it with the uncontrolled case considering various performance indicators such as total travel time, average delay time per vehicle, and average number of stops per vehicle. For the dynamic ramp metering strategies, the ALINEA (Asservissement Lineaire d'Entree Autoroutiere - French for Linear Utilization for Highway Entrances) control algorithm is implemented with different fixed-time cycle lengths. It has been observed that various ramp metering implementations decreased the average delay time per vehicle up to 30%. The dynamic speed limit control strategies are set according to the occupancy rates that are measured at the bottleneck downstream. The examined speed limit control strategies decreased the average delay time per vehicle to around 7%. The results also revealed that the implemented dynamic traffic control strategies help alleviate congestion by increasing the capacity of the bottleneck section.

    TL and OSL response of turquoise for dosimetric application

    Turquoise is one of the amongst first gem stones used in jewelry and possessing cultural value since 2000 BC (at least). This work attempts characterize this stone scientifically using both thermally (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) techniques. The experimental investigation included 1) the study of the natural TL and OSL signals, 2) the reproducibility of TL sensitivity over repeated irradiation and TL readout cycles, 3) dependence of sensitivity on annealing temperatures and 4) the TL and OSL dose response curves. The potential use of the TL and OSL techniques in determination of provenance, accidental dosimetry and probably to authenticity and dating purposes are then discussed.

    Preparing multipartite entangled spin qubits via pauli spin blockade

    Preparing large-scale multi-partite entangled states of quantum bits in each physical form such as photons, atoms or electrons for each specific application area is a fundamental issue in quantum science and technologies. Here, we propose a setup based on Pauli spin blockade (PSB) for the preparation of large-scale W states of electrons in a double quantum dot (DQD). Within the proposed scheme, two W states of n and m electrons respectively can be fused by allowing each W state to transfer a single electron to each quantum dot. The presence or absence of PSB then determines whether the two states have fused or not, leading to the creation of a W state of n + m ? 2 electrons in the successful case. Contrary to previous works based on quantum dots or nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond, our proposal does not require any photon assistance. Therefore the ‘complex’ integration and tuning of an optical cavity is not a necessary prerequisite. We also show how to improve the success rate in our setup. Because requirements are based on currently available technology and well-known sensing techniques, our scheme can directly contribute to the advances in quantum technologies and, in particular in solid state systems.

    Surpassing the classical limit in magic square game with distant quantum dots coupled to optical cavities

    The emergence of quantum technologies is heating up the debate on quantum supremacy, usually focusing on the feasibility of looking good on paper algorithms in realistic settings, due to the vulnerability of quantum systems to myriad sources of noise. In this vein, an interesting example of quantum pseudo-telepathy games that quantum mechanical resources can theoretically outperform classical resources is the Magic Square game (MSG), in which two players play against a referee. Due to noise, however, the unit winning probability of the players can drop well below the classical limit. Here, we propose a timely and unprecedented experimental setup for quantum computation with quantum dots inside optical cavities, along with ancillary photons for realizing interactions between distant dots to implement the MSG. Considering various physical imperfections of our setup, we first show that the MSG can be implemented with the current technology, outperforming the classical resources under realistic conditions. Next, we show that our work gives rise to a new version of the game. That is, if the referee has information on the physical realization and strategy of the players, he can bias the game through filtered randomness, and increase his winning probability. We believe our work contributes to not only quantum game theory, but also quantum computing with quantum dots.

    It is shown that dendrimers have maximum spectral radius and maximum Collatz-Sinogowitz index among all chemical trees of given size. The result is also generalized for the class of chemical trees with prescribed number of pendant vertices.
