The relation of high structures with the urban texture: examples of London and Paris
(Kare Yayıncılık, 2021-07) Ölgen, Burcu; Aytıs, Saadet
The positioning of high structures creates important effects on the city silhouette; even sometimes it is created by them. This silhouette could be in close relationship with the historical regions as well as developing outside the city. It was observed that tall buildings developed in two different ways in London and Paris. This study aims to examine the urban texture of tall building areas in two cities in terms of architectural and urban design aspects. The historical development of London and Paris, and the role of tall buildings in this process were compared. High buildings in London developed alongside with the historical texture, while in Paris they located in an especially reserved area outside the city. These different situations have developed with the city dwellers’ lifestyles, as well as created spatially different effects on them. In this context, the relationship of tall buildings with urban fabric is examined, and an example of a high building selected from each city is discussed. These examples are The Leadenhall from London and Tour First from Paris. It was concluded that the locations of the high buildings have an important role in the urban texture, and it also depends on politics to make decisions.

AI in architectural education: rethinking studio culture
    (Atatürk Üniversitesi, 2025-09-20) Karadağ, Derya
This article examines the pedagogical transformations emerging in architectural education through a conceptual and critical perspective focused on human–AI co-creativity. Co-creativity specifically refers to collaborations between human designers and artificial intelligence, in contrast to broader notions of collaborative creativity. The paper argues that AI functions not merely as a technical instrument, but as a co-creative partner that reshapes studio culture, authorship, and creative work. Drawing on selected studio-based cases, the study explores how AI-supported workflows influence ideation, representation, critique culture, prompt literacy, and ethical reasoning. Thematically, it engages with concepts such as cognitive augmentation and conceptual ambiguity to demonstrate how design pedagogy is evolving in response to intelligent systems. Rather than viewing AI as a generative tool alone, the article positions it as an epistemic and ethical agent that prompts a rethinking of studio environments as cultural and pedagogical spaces. Methodologically, the study adopts a casebased approach, analyzing selected 16 design studios in which AI was integrated into early-stage ideation, feedback sessions, and conceptual development. These cases extent strategies from prompt-driven speculation to hybrid critique practices, revealing a dynamic landscape of experimentation and adaptation. The findings suggest that AI can foster deeper conceptual inquiry, student reflection, and new modalities of authorship and collaboration. Eventually, the study underscores the need for reflexive pedagogical frameworks that integrate AI meaningfully enhancing, rather than displacing, human creativity.

High rise buildings in historic cities
(The Association of Science, Education and Technology, 2017-04) Süyük Makaklı, Elif; Özker, Serpil
High rise building was the most remarkable new building type to emerge in the late 19th century which has entirely changed the scale, appearance, concept and image of cities with its great visual impact. With advanced technologies the skylines of the cities dominated by high rise buildings all over the world in 20th century. In the 21st century it can be expected that more and more innovative high rise buildings will be built, utilizing the cutting-edge techniques also in historic cities with World Heritage Sites. High rise buildings’ relationship with their context is more problematic than any other structure, the subject of what they add and what they take away to the city is quite controversial. Introducing a new building in a historic city has a dramatic impact on traditional urbanistic structure. In this study high rise buildings in historic cities with World Heritage Sites, their development, and impact on the city and the urban image are examined by selected examples from different historic cities. The current approaches for designing high rise buildings in a historical setting will be also examined.

High-rise buildings in cultural code of Istanbul: Büyükdere avenue example
(ICNTAD Secretariat, 2020-10) Ölgen, Burcu; Özker, Serpil
The definition of the industrial city, which emerged with the industrial revolution, caused the urban perception to change and transform as the production units started to move to the city periphery in the 20th century. Population growth, rapid urbanization and changing social needs have made high-rise buildings inevitable for big cities. In this study, it was aimed to examine the change and transformation of the Istanbul Büyükdere region, which hosted the industrial structures of Istanbul for a period, as well as the spatial and urban context of mixed-function high-rise buildings, which are one of the most prominent examples that determine the current building stock of the region and to examine their effects on urban development. In this direction, analysis of the transformation of the city, space, and the users have been made through the examples of buildings on the Levent-Maslak axle. Büyükdere Avenue is a region where high-rise building stock is located on the central axle, and where the high-value buildings are located in the city. As a result, it has been concluded that in the Levent-Maslak axle, there has been a rise in sheltered office-housing-activity areas for the high-income group due to the earning concerns of large companies and this increased the interest to the region.
