Yayın Standing waves for a generalized Davey-Stewartson system(IOP Publishing, 2006-10-27) Eden, Osman Alp; Erbay, SaadetIn this paper, we establish the existence of non-trivial solutions for a semi-linear elliptic partial differential equation with a non-local term. This result allows us to prove the existence of standing wave ( ground state) solutions for a generalized Davey-Stewartson system. A sharp upper bound is also obtained on the size of the initial values for which solutions exist globally.Yayın Generative and discriminative methods using morphological information for sentence segmentation of Turkish(IEEE-INST Electrical Electronics Engineers Inc, 2009-07) Güz, Ümit; Favre, Benoit; Hakkani Tür, Dilek; Tür, GökhanThis paper presents novel methods for generative, discriminative, and hybrid sequence classification for segmentation of Turkish word sequences into sentences. In the literature, this task is generally solved using statistical models that take advantage of lexical information among others. However, Turkish has a productive morphology that generates a very large vocabulary, making the task much harder. In this paper, we introduce a new set of morphological features, extracted from words and their morphological analyses. We also extend the established method of hidden event language modeling (HELM) to factored hidden event language modeling (fHELM) to handle morphological information. In order to capture non-lexical information, we extract a set of prosodic features, which are mainly motivated from our previous work for other languages. We then employ discriminative classification techniques, boosting and conditional random fields (CRFs), combined with fHELM, for the task of Turkish sentence segmentation.Yayın Reciprocal relations between the trajectories of mothers’ harsh discipline, responsiveness and aggression in early childhood(Springer New York LLC, 2018-01-01) Akçinar Yayla, Berna; Baydar, NazlıTheoretical advances in the study of the development of aggressive behaviors indicate that parenting behaviors and child aggression mutually influence one another. This study contributes to the body of empirical research in this area by examining the development of child aggression, maternal responsiveness, and maternal harsh discipline, using 5-year longitudinal data from a nationally representative sample of Turkish children (n = 1009; 469 girls and 582 boys). Results indicated that: (i) maternal responsiveness and harsh discipline at age 3 were associated with the subsequent linear trajectory of aggression; (ii) reciprocally, aggressive behaviors at age 3 were associated with the subsequent linear trajectories of these two types of parenting behaviors; (iii) deviations from the linear trajectories of the child and mother behaviors tended to be short lived; and, (iv) the deviations of child behaviors from the linear trajectories were associated with the subsequent changes in mother behaviors after age 5. These findings are discussed in the cultural context of this study.Yayın Iterative channel estimation approach for space-time/frequency coded OFDM systems with transmitter diversity(Assoc Elettrotecnica Ed Elettronica Italiana, 2004-06) Çırpan, Hakan Ali; Panayırcı, Erdal; Doğan, HakanFocusing on transmit diversity orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission through frequency selective channels, this paper pursues novel iterative channel estimation approaches for both space-frequency OFDM (SF-OFDM) and space-time OFDM (ST-OFDM) systems. Relying on the unifying signal model for SF-OFDM and ST-OFDM transmitter diversity systems, we develop computationally efficient, maximum a posteriori (MAP) channel estimation algorithms according to the MAP criterion. The algorithms require a convenient representation of the discrete multipath fading channel based on the Karhunen-Loeve (KL) orthogonal expansion and estimates the complex channel parameters of each subcarriers iteratively using the expectation-maximisation (EM) method. In order to explore the performance, the closed-form expression for the average symbol error rate (SER) probability is derived for the maximum ratio combiner (MRC). Furthermore, to benchmark performance of the MAP channel estimator, the modified Cramer-Rao bound of channel estimates is also derived. Finally, we provide simulation results studying the influence of delay spread, propagation parameters and modelling mismatch on the performance of channel estimation techniques. Simulation results confirm our theoretical analysis and illustrate that the proposed algorithms are capable of tracking fast fading and improving overall performance.Yayın Coupled quintic nonlinear Schrodinger equations in a generalized elastic solid(IOP Publishing Ltd, 2004-10-08) Hacınlıyan, Irma; Erbay, SaadetIn the present study, the nonlinear modulation of transverse waves propagating in a cubically nonlinear dispersive elastic medium is studied using a multiscale expansion of wave solutions. It is found that the propagation of quasimonochromatic transverse waves is described by a pair of coupled nonlinear Schrodinger (CNLS) equations. In the process of deriving the amplitude equations, it is observed that for a specific choice of material constants and wavenumber, the coefficient of nonlinear terms becomes zero, and the CNLS equations are no longer valid for describing the behaviour of transverse waves. In order to balance the nonlinear effects with the dispersive effects, by intensifying the nonlinearity, a new perturbation expansion is used near the critical wavenumber. It is found that the long time behaviour of the transverse waves about the critical wavenumber is given by a pair of coupled quintic nonlinear Schrodinger (CQNLS) equations. In the absence of one of the transverse waves, the CQNLS equations reduce to the single quintic nonlinear Schrodinger (QNLS) equation which has already been obtained in the context of water waves. By using a modified form of the so-called tanh method, some travelling wave solutions of the CQNLS equations are presented.Yayın On the realization of optical mappings and transformation of amplitudes by means of an aspherical "thick" lens(Gustav Fischer Verlag, 2000) Hasanoğlu, Elman; Polat, Burak DenizThe constraints for the realization of a given optical mapping by means of an aspherical ''thick" lens are investigated by using the laws of geometrical optics. The analysis yields us a partial differential equation which the optical mapping functions must satisfy as a necessary and sufficient condition. It is shown that thick lenses, which convert plane waves to plane waves, can be considered as a pure amplitude element, An interesting feature of this equation is that it does not involve the lens profiles. The problem of realization is later discussed for some special mappings and graphical illustrations of the aspherical lens profiles for a linear mapping are presented.Yayın Electrochromic switching of WO3 nanostructures and thin films(Springer-Verlag, 2006-04) Karakurt, İsmail; Boneberg, Johannes; Leiderer, PaulWe present transmission measurements through tungsten tri-oxide nanostructures and thin films prepared by sol-gel process on micro-contact printed substrates. Identical electrochromic switching times are found for both the nanostructures and the bulk films with equal thicknesses upon intercalation of H+ ions. We attribute the large change in the transmission through nanostructures at 632 nm, which can not be solely explained by absorption, to diffraction effects.Yayın Bifurcation of drift shells near the dayside magnetopause(Amer Geophysical Union, 2007-07-10) Öztürk, Mehmet Kaan; Wolf, Richard A.Close to the dayside magnetopause, there is a region of space where each field line has two magnetic field minima, one near each cusp. That region is located around local noon, and extends about 1-2 R-e from the magnetopause. Particles that enter this region with equatorial pitch angles sufficiently close to 90 degrees will cross the dayside not along an equatorial path, but along one of the two branches on either side of the equatorial plane. The two branches are joined again past local noon. This process of drift-shell bifurcation (DSB) is nonadiabatic even under static conditions. Two physical mechanisms can cause this nonadiabaticity: one that is operative for nearly all magnetospheric magnetic field configurations and another that depends on a particular combination of north-south and east-west asymmetry in the magnetic field. This paper deals only with the first mechanism. For configurations with north-south and east-west symmetry, DSB changes the second invariant I of the motion by a small amount that is of the order of the gyroradius (the first invariant is intact). For near-equatorial particles (I approximate to 0) the change can be significantly larger. Assuming north-south and dawn-dusk symmetry, we present general theoretical expressions for the second-invariant jump Delta I, which can be applied to a variety of magnetic field models. The results show that Delta I is sensitively dependent on the bounce phase of the particle at the bifurcation line. The RMS value of Delta I over a bounce-phase ensemble increases with decreasing mirror field and with increasing kinetic energy. We verify these results with test-particle simulations using model magnetic fields.Yayın The moderation of Turkey's Kurdish left: the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP)(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2018-10-20) Celep, ÖdülModeration theory, within the political party context, has often been applied to European Socialists and Christian Democrats, as well as Islamic revivalists in the Muslim world. This article applies moderation theory to the Kurdish left of Turkey, namely the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP). The HDP's electoral breakthrough in June 2015 elections carried the potential for this party to transform itself into a larger and moderate actor. Nevertheless, the repeat elections of November 2015 weakened the HDP's prospects as the ruling AKP won enough seats to reconstitute a single-party government. This article puts forth three major explanations for the recent moderation of the Kurdish left: first, the then ongoing peace (resolution) process between the Turkish government and Kurdish actors; second, the Demirta factor', the personality and politics of Selahattin Demirta, the HDP's co-chair; and finally, the HDP's direct confrontation with President Erdoan in both electoral and political terms in the 2015 general elections.Yayın Weakly non-linear waves in a tapered elastic tube filled with an inviscid fluid(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2005-07) Bakırtaş, İlkay; Demiray, HilmiIn the present work, treating the artery as a tapered, thin walled, long and circularly conical prestressed elastic tube and using the longwave approximation, we have studied the propagation of weakly non-linear waves in such a fluid-filled elastic tube by employing the reductive perturbation method. By considering the blood as an incompressible inviscid fluid, the evolution equation is obtained as the Korteweg-de Vries equation with a variable coefficient. It is shown that this type of equation admits a solitary wave-type solution with variable wave speed. It is observed that, the wave speed decreases with distance for positive tapering while it increases for negative tapering. It is further observed that, the progressive wave profile for expanding tubes (a > 0) becomes more steepened whereas for narrowing tubes (a < 0) it becomes more flattened.
