    Quaternary uplift of the northern margin of the Central Anatolian Plateau: New OSL dates of fluvial and delta-terrace deposits of the Kizilirmak River, Black Sea coast, Turkey

    We analysed the interplay between coastal uplift, sea level change in the Black Sea, and incision of the Kizilirmak River in northern Turkey. These processes have created multiple co-genetic fluvial and marine terrace sequences that serve as excellent strain markers to assess the ongoing evolution of the Pontide orogenic wedge and the growth of the northern margin of the Central Anatolian Plateau. We used high-resolution topographic data, OSL ages, and published information on past sea levels to analyse the spatiotemporal evolution of these terraces; we derived a regional uplift model for the northward advancing orogenic wedge that supports the notion of laterally variable uplift rates along the flanks of the Pontides. The best-fit uplift model defines a constant long-term uplift rate of 0.28 +/- 0.07 m/ka for the last 545 ka. This model explains the evolution of the terrace sequence in light of active tectonic processes and superposed cycles of climate-controlled sea-level change. Our new data reveal regional uplift characteristics that are comparable to the inner sectors of the Central Pontides; accordingly, the rate of uplift diminishes with increasing distance from the main strand of the restraining bend of the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ). This spatial relationship between the regional impact of the restraining bend of the NAFZ and uplift of the Pontide wedge thus suggests a strong link between the activity of the NAFZ, deformation and uplift in the Pontide orogenic wedge, and the sustained lateral growth of the Central Anatolian Plateau flank.

    TL and OSL response of turquoise for dosimetric application

    Turquoise is one of the amongst first gem stones used in jewelry and possessing cultural value since 2000 BC (at least). This work attempts characterize this stone scientifically using both thermally (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) techniques. The experimental investigation included 1) the study of the natural TL and OSL signals, 2) the reproducibility of TL sensitivity over repeated irradiation and TL readout cycles, 3) dependence of sensitivity on annealing temperatures and 4) the TL and OSL dose response curves. The potential use of the TL and OSL techniques in determination of provenance, accidental dosimetry and probably to authenticity and dating purposes are then discussed.

    Small molecule desorption from a swelling polymeric glass in polymer solution: Energy transfer method

    Direct energy transfer (DET) method conjunction with fast transient fluorescence (FTRF) technique were used to study small molecule desorption from a swelling poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) glass in polymer solution, which is consist of naphthalene (N)-labeled PMMA chains in chlorofrom-heptane mixture. Desorption coefficients, D-d of pyrene (P) desorbing from the swelling PMMA glass prior to dissolution were measured and found to be 8.3 x 10(-8) and 1.3 x 10(-5) cm(2) s(-1) in short and long time regions, respectively.

    A comparative morphological, compositional and tl study of tenedos (Bozcaada) and Sile aeolianites, Turkey

    Aeolianites are carbonate-cemented deposits of coastal dune sands, mostly of Quaternary age. Even though aeolianite exposures on the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea are frequent, very few records have been documented from the coasts of either the Aegean or the Black Sea. The present study deals with evaluating and comparing both compositions and thermoluminescence (TL) ages of two recently reported samples of coastal aeolianites. Both were recovered at the Turkish coasts of Tenedos (Bozcaada) island, Aegean Sea and Şile, Western Black Sea. In the latter case, being the first record for the specific coastal area, the oldest age obtained was dated at 158±25 ka while the youngest age yielded was 108±14 ka. These values imply that both deposition and cementation occurred during the high sea stand of marine isotope stage 5 (MIS 5). In the case of Tenedos, the aeolianites were deposited between the early stage of the oxygen isotope stage 2 period (OIS 2) and the very late phase of the oxygen isotope stage 3 period (OIS 3). These latter TL results are in excellent agreement with a previous study of the same complex after applying OSL. Besides the ages, a number of luminescent features and properties in conjunction with compositional data suggest the dissimilarity for the quartz samples extracted from the aeolianites recovered at these two sampling sites, excluding thus any transport from one sampling site to the other, despite the short distance of the two sampling sites and the meteorological data regarding the preferable wind directions between them.

    The firing temperature of pottery from ancient Mesopotamia, Turkey, using luminescence methods: a case study for different grain-size fractions

    The assessment of the firing temperature of a prehistoric pottery sample collected from ancient Mesopotamia, Turkey was studied using luminescence techniques. The methods for this estimation involved the observation of the thermal and pre-dose sensitization with various re-firing temperatures for both TL and the OSL signals. In the former case, the 110 degrees C TL peak and the rest of the glow curve were used as proxies in this study. In the framework of a first attempt to investigate the impact of grain-size dependence on the sensitization of the luminescence signals, the aforementioned study was performed with four different pottery grain-size fractions: (i) less than 60m, (ii) 60-90m, (iii) 90-180m and (iv) 180-250m. The results clearly demonstrated the firing temperature mark of approximate to 500 degrees C in for the grain size of 90-180m, whileas in the case of the lower grain-size fractiona third proxy, the ratio of the pre-dosed to the thermal sensitization, was seen to indicate the firing temperature. The remaining two grain-size fractions failed to provide any meaningful results with regard to the firing temperature estimation. The dependence of the TL characteristics on the grain size was explained in the framework of the mixed mineralogy.

    New quartz technique for OSL dating of limestones

    The equivalent dose De determination of limestone-made ancient constructions by thermoluminescence (TL) prevents accurate measurements and requires plateau test of bleached curves. Optical stimulated luminescence (OSL) of quartz and feldspar minerals for surface dating is routinely applied for De but not for limestones. Here the OSL of present traces of such minerals removed with powder from surface limestone bleached by sunlight overcomes this issue and offers an alternative way for De. This is verified with further test examples.

    Eolianite and coquinite as evidence of MIS 6 and 5, NW Black Sea coast, Turkey

    This paper discusses the implications of a lowstand carbonate eolianite and overlying transgressive sequence of coquinite at Şile on the Turkish Black Sea coast based on composition, depositional characteristics and optical age estimations. The cross-bedded eolianite is a mixed ooid quartz grainstone in composition, yielding a depositional age matching MIS 6. It formed at the backshore of the paleobeach with the supply of sediment the from the beach face and offering insights into the drift of mixed shallow marine carbonates and siliciclastics together with radial ooids by onshore winds from a subaerially exposed high- to low-energy ooid shoals and oolitic sand complexes which developed parallel to the shoreline on the shallow shelf margin. During this lowstand, a low-relief dune retaining a record of opposing paleowind directions than that of prevalent northeasterly winds of today appears to have been lithified to form dune rock (aeolinite) under drier conditions compared to the present. Coinciding with MIS 5e, shallow marine coquina beds resting unconformably on the eolianite indicate the occurrence of the Mediterranean transgression during the last interglacial, as confirmed by benthic foraminifera within the high-salinity tolerant coquina shells.

    Poly (styrene) latex/modified na-activated bentonite nanocomposite films: a fluorescence study

    We studied film formation of composites of surfactant-free polystyrene (PS) nanoparticles and modified Na-activated bentonite (MLB), by steady state fluorescence (SSF) technique. The films were prepared from a mixture of pyrene (P)-labeled PS particles and MLB at various compositions at room temperature. These films were annealed at elevated temperatures above the glass transition (T(g)) temperature of polystyrene for 10 min. Scattered light (I(S)) and fluorescence intensities (I(P)) from P were measured after each annealing step to monitor the stages of film formation. Evolution of transparency of the composite films was monitored by using photon transmission intensity, I(tr) Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to detect the variation in physical structure of annealed composite films. The nanocomposite films exhibited a percolation threshold at 20 wt.% MLB content. Below this fraction two distinct film formation stages were observed which are known as void closure and interdiffusion and above this fraction no film formation was detected. At 0-20 wt.% MLB, minimum film formation, T(0), void closure, T(v) and healing, T(h) temperatures were determined. Void closure and interdiffusion stages were modeled and related activation energies were determined. Void closure activation energies decreased as the percent of MLB increased, no variation was observed in backbone activation energies.

    IRSL dating of a deep water core from Pylos, Greece; comparison to post ir blue OSL and TL dating results

    The 'double SAR' protocol procedure permits the determination of two equivalent dose (De) values for each polymineral aliquot; an IRSL De resulting mostly from feldspars along with a post-IR OSL De for a mixed signal for quartz (mostly) and feldspar grains. The objective of the present study is to test for the first time its usefulness for polymineral, coarse silt, closely-spaced deep-sea sediment samples. A new, 'double SAR' IRSL dataset is presented for the sedimentation ages of a deep-sea sediment core of the Hellenic Trench, drilled from a water depth of 4 km, near the deepest site of the Mediterranean Sea, outside Pylos, Greece. Post IR quartz-based optical dating was previously proved to be consistent with AMS radiocarbon ages, obtained from planktonic foraminifera from the same core. IRSL De values are, with one exception, always much greater than the corresponding (post-IR) OSL results. This result suggests that for the present study 'double SAR' protocol procedure was proved to be extremely effective method for separating the luminescence signals from quartz and feldspars. Furthermore, De values obtained after infra-red stimulation and thermoluminescence generally agree within errors. This quantitative equivalence of those two sets of De values implies that as in the case of IRSL, TL signal is also feldspar-dominated. IRSL ages vary between 3.5 and 7.8 ka with associated errors up to 9%. Application of 'double SAR' protocol to coarse silt, closely-spaced deep-sea sediment samples seems advisable, despite the fact that the post-IR blue OSL signal is the most stable signal, and is preferred for dating.

    Film formation from pure and mixed latices; transient fluorescence study

    A fast transient fluorescence technique was used to study latex film formation induced by organic solvent vapor. Mixtures of pyrene (P)- and naphthalene (N)-labeled and/or pure naphthalene-labeled latex films were prepared separately from poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles. Then these pure and mixed latex films were exposed to vapor of various chloroform-heptane mixtures in seven different experiments. In both films, fluorescence lifetimes from N were monitored during vapor-induced film formation. It was observed that N lifetimes decreased as the vapor exposure time is increased. A Stern-Volmer kinetic analysis was used for low quenching efficiencies to interpret the decrease in N lifetimes. A Prager-Tirrell model was employed to obtain back-and-forth frequencies, v, of reptating PMMA chains during latex film formation induced by solvent vapor. In both pure and mixed latex films, v values were found to be correlated with the chloroform content in the vapor mixture. It was observed that polymer interdiffusion obeyed a t(1/2) law during film formation.
