An economic analysis of the communication skills in globalised industrial relations: social dialogue and the negotiation process in Turkey
(Univ Complutense Madrid, 2011-03-01) Soykut Sarıca, Yeşim Pınar; Şen Taşbaşı, Aslı
The purpose of this paper is to provide an economic analysis of the social dialogue experience in Turkey with an emphasis on the role of communication in industrial relations. We ascertain social dialogue -and the related negotiation process- as a major communication form in industrial relations and attempt to find out whether it serves well to promote consensus building and democratic involvement among the main stakeholders in employment. We particularly question the success of the existing social dialogue structures and processes in Turkey in resolving economic and social issues through communication, advancing social and industrial peace, improving competitiveness through increased productivity and complying international commitments in employment.

Design science perspective on NFC research: Review and research agenda
(Slovensko Drustvo Informatika, 2013) Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz; Özdenizci Köse, Büşra
Near Field Communication (NFC), as one of the emerging and promising technological developments, provides means to short range contactless communication for mobile phones and other devices alike. NFC has become an attractive design science research area for many academicians due to its exploding growth and its promising applications and related services. A better understanding of the current status of NFC research is necessary to maintain the advancement of knowledge in NFC research and to identify the gap between theory and practice. In this paper, we present a literature review on NFC. To facilitate the analysis of the literature, we propose a research framework and organize the NFC literature into four major categories (theory and development, applications and services, infrastructure, ecosystem). We contend that due to the nature of NFC (industry high stakes, multidisciplinary research, artifacts development), the design science research paradigm serves an appropriate ground to investigate an extent to which relevance and rigor is achieved. By employing the proposed research framework and design science perspective, we set up a research agenda (research directions and promising research questions) which may help practitioners and academics to achieve a substantial progress in NFC.

Usability of mobile voting with NFC technology
(Acta Press, 2010) Ok, Kerem; Coşkun, Vedat; Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz
Voting is a method to select one opinion or a person often following discussion, debate or an election campaign. After centuries of paper based voting ballots, electronic voting is used along with various technologies. One of the promising technologies is Near Field Communication (NFC) which allows data transfer between NFC-enabled devices and smart tags within a short distance. In this paper, we have presented a new type of a secure voting system, namely NFC voting, and evaluated the system's usability in a university council election with an executable prototype. Among other findings, we found that NFC voting satisfies electronic voting requirements and further increases the subjective usability of the proposed system.

Generating multi-atom entangled W states via light-matter interface based fusion mechanism
(Nature Publishing Group, 2015-11-09) Özaydın, Fatih; Zang, Xue-Ping; Yang, Ming; Song, Wei; Cao, Zhuo-Liang
W state is a key resource in quantum communication. Fusion technology has been proven to be a good candidate for preparing a large-size W state from two or more small-size W states in linear optical system. It is of great importance to study how to fuse W states via light-matter interface. Here we show that it is possible to prepare large-size W-state networks using a fusion mechanism in cavity QED system. The detuned interaction between three atoms and a vacuum cavity mode constitute the main fusion mechanism, based on which two or three small-size atomic W states can be fused into a larger-size W state. If no excitation is detected from those three atoms, the remaining atoms are still in the product of two or three new W states, which can be re-fused. The complicated Fredkin gate used in the previous fusion schemes is avoided here. W states of size 2 can be fused as well. The feasibility analysis shows that our fusion processes maybe implementable with the current technology. Our results demonstrate how the light-matter interaction based fusion mechanism can be realized, and may become the starting point for the fusion of multipartite entanglement in cavity QED system.

Demo abstract: TeleHealth - Intelligent healthcare with M2M communication module
(ACM, 2012-11-06) Ayyıldız, Cem; Erman, Kamil; Özgül, Mehmet Emin; Tüysüz Erman, Ayşegül; Güngör, Çağrı
Chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease (e.g. arrhythmia and hypertension), chronic respiratory diseases (e.g. asthma and COPD), are by far the leading cause of mortality in the world, representing 63% of all deaths. Out of the 36 million people who died from chronic disease in 2008, nine million were under 60. Remote patient monitoring is an efficient and cost-effective solution to mitigate this problem. The key technology to facilitate wireless mobile healthcare or TeleHealth is cellular based M2M (machine-to-machine) communication. In this demo, we present a M2M Communication Module and its healthcare application developed at Turkcell Technology, Applied Research Lab.

The internet and political participation : exploring the explanatory links
(Sage Publications Ltd, 2005-12) Karakaya Polat, Rabia
There is a growing literature exploring the role of the Internet in influencing levels and styles of political participation. However, it is not yet clear why the Internet is perceived as a medium that can, at least potentially, increase participation. Moreover, putting the emphasis on the Internet as a technology rather than on its information and communication capabilities signals a tendency for technological determinism. In order to avoid this, the article explores the relation between the Internet and political participation by examining three different facets of the Internet: the Internet as an information source, as a communication medium and as a virtual public sphere. The main argument of the article is that it is these facets of the Internet that may affect levels and styles of political participation and hence are of interest for political scientists. The article also emphasizes the relevance of established theories of participation within political science in evaluating the potential role of the Internet for affecting levels and styles of political participation.

Improving age of information in random access channels
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2020-07) Atabay, Doğa Can; Uysal, Elif; Kaya, Onur
We study Age of Information (AoI) in a random access channel where a number of devices try to send status updates over a common medium. Assuming a time-slotted scenario where multiple transmissions result in collision, we propose a threshold-based lazy version of Slotted ALOHA and derive the time average AoI achieved by this policy. We demonstrate that the average AoI performance of the lazy policy is significantly better than Slotted ALOHA, and close to the ideal round robin benchmark.

ViLDAR-Visible light sensing-based speed estimation using vehicle headlamps
(IEEE, 2019-11) Abuella, Hisham; Miramirkhani, Farshad; Ekin, Sabit; Uysal, Murat; Ahmed, Samir
The introduction of light emitting diodes (LED) in automotive exterior lighting systems provides opportunities to develop viable alternatives to conventional communication and sensing technologies. Most of the advanced driver-assist and autonomous vehicle technologies are based on Radio Detection and Ranging (RADAR) or Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) systems that use radio frequency or laser signals, respectively. While reliable and real-time information on vehicle speeds is critical for traffic operations management and autonomous vehicles safety, RADAR or LiDAR systems have some deficiencies especially in curved road scenarios where the incidence angle is rapidly varying. In this paper, we propose a novel speed estimation system so-called the Visible Light Detection and Ranging (ViLDAR) that builds upon sensing visible light variation of the vehicle's headlamp. We determine the accuracy of the proposed speed estimator in straight and curved road scenarios. We further present how the algorithm design parameters and the channel noise level affect the speed estimation accuracy. For wide incidence angles, the simulation results show that the ViLDAR outperforms RADAR/LiDAR systems in both straight and curved road scenarios.
