Yayın The relation between geographical place and innovativeness: the case of Turkey(Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi, 2014-05-26) Falcıoğlu, PınarA line of argument in the new growth economy discussions is whether specialization or diversification of economic activity on the geographical scale stimulates innovation. This study explores the relation between innovativeness and different types of geographical concentrations in the case of a developing country. The study addresses the discussion through statistical and econometric analyses using variables such as number of patents, new firm entry and exit at the regional level for the period 1995-2001. The results do not confirm that regions with higher levels of related variety or specialization are more innovative, but instead regions with higher levels of variety are found to be more innovative supporting the diversity thesis.Yayın The moderating role of environmental munificence on innovativeness in B2B markets(Emerald Group Publishing Limited, 2019-09-30) Gül, Mısra ÇağlaPurpose: The purpose of this paper is to understand the relationship between two business orientations, namely, entrepreneurial orientation and market orientation, and innovativeness taking into account the moderating influence of environmental munificence. Design/methodology/approach: This is a multiple respondent quantitative study. A total of 312 marketing managers middle level and above from 79 firms participated in the survey. Multiple regression and hierarchical multiple regression was the method of choice for data analysis. Findings: Findings indicate that environmental munificence moderates the entrepreneurial orientation – innovativeness relationship. Findings reveal that even though a significant impact of entrepreneurial orientation is not present on innovativeness, this insignificance may be due to environmental munificence. Market orientation has a direct positive impact on innovativeness, and environmental munificence negatively moderates this relationship suggesting that when the environment is less munificent, the market orientation – innovation link becomes stronger. Practical implications: Managers should be aware that the more munificent an environment becomes, having an entrepreneurial orientation will be more important for innovativeness. In addition, results of this study suggest that being market oriented more strongly impacts a firm’s ability to innovate in non-munificent environments where growth opportunities are undesirable. Originality/value: This study is unique in that it is a multi-respondent study with respondents from different layers of each participating organization, incorporating the moderating impact of the business environment’s munificence on business orientations–innovativeness relationship.Yayın From past to present: spam detection and identifying opinion leaders in social networks(Yildiz Teknik Univ., 2022-06-22) Altınel Girgin, Ayşe Berna; Gümüşçekiçci, GizemOn microblogging sites, which are gaining more and more users every day, a wide range of ideas are quickly emerging, spreading, and creating interactive environments. In some cases, in Turkey as well as in the rest of the world, it was noticed that events were published on microblogging sites before appearing in visual, audio and printed news sources. Thanks to the rapid flow of information in social networks, it can reach millions of people in seconds. In this context, social media can be seen as one of the most important sources of information affecting public opinion. Since the information in social networks became accessible, research started to be conducted using the information on the social networks. While the studies about spam detection and identification of opinion leaders gained popularity, surveys about these topics began to be published. This study also shows the importance of spam detection and identification of opinion leaders in social networks. It is seen that the data collected from social platforms, especially in recent years, has sourced many state-of-art applications. There are independent surveys that focus on filtering the spam content and detecting influencers on social networks. This survey analyzes both spam detection studies and opinion leader identification and categorizes these studies by their methodologies. As far as we know there is no survey that contains approaches for both spam detection and opinion leader identification in social networks. This survey contains an overview of the past and recent advances in both spam detection and opinion leader identification studies in social networks. Furthermore, readers of this survey have the opportunity of understanding general aspects of different studies about spam detection and opinion leader identification while observing key points and comparisons of these studies.Yayın Rasyonalite ve akışkanlık: Modernist örgüt kuramlarının kompleksite düşüncesi ekseninde tahlili(Doğuş Üniversitesi, 2019) Yüksel, Ahmet HakanModernist düşünce akımının örgütleri mekanik sistemler olarak tanımlamasının bir yansıması olan makina metaforunun etkisi altında geliştirilmiş örgütsel kuramların temel varsayımlarının günümüzün kompleks küresel ortamında işlerliği sorgulanır hale gelmiştir. Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) has reshaped software technology through the creation of developer/user communities which enabled the collaboration of different parties resulting in the production of Linux and similar software projects. FLOSS user/developer community networks serve not only as "learning, reviewing, and testing" environments for developers, but they may also act as innovation networks that contribute to the improvement of the innovative capabilities of individual developers within the community. Therefore, understanding the characteristics, the motivating factors and the innovative dynamics of these developer communities will provide valuable insight into how to improve the innovative capabilities of developing countries in relation to software. The aim of this paper is to explore the characteristics of FLOSS developer communities in order to discover what benefits they may offer developing countries in generating innovative capabilities related to software. By conducting a survey in the FLOSS user/developer community in Turkey, the demographic characteristics, motivation factors and innovative characteristics of the community are explored and the question of whether these communities may act as innovation networks is examined. It is concluded that FLOSS community networks mostly serve as knowledge sharing and collaboration platforms, however, they do have the potential to evolve into innovation networks if they receive support from the local software industry and academic institutions.Yayın Innovative project management: A case study in electronics industry(Işık Üniversitesi, 2019-04-15) Sadıç, Alican; Eyüpgiller, Sait Saygın; Işık Üniversitesi, Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, Yöneticiler İçin İşletme Yönetimi Yüksek Lisans ProgramıManagement of economic units is as old as the history of civilizations; however, the formation of the project management methodology and the determination of its rules have been established rather recently. The most important historical examples of project management in the construction and architecture area happened especially in the period between the 18th and 19th centuries. The most beautiful and oldest historical reference project may be the construction of Egyptian Pyramids. Nowadays, project management has also become a distinctive way to manage business activities. Most of accomplished companies in all industries are using project management techniques, and the companies using project management for the operations. On the other hand, the importance of innovation in our life has increased in daily life with the increasing global competitive environment. Innovation has also become a distinctive part of management theory. The increase in innovation performance of countries has a key role on business economic ans social development, prosperity, and growth in our time. For this reason, project-based firms have started to apply innovationtechniques more than ever. These firms started to become a more vital and important organizational context, as examples many current managerial challenges. Innovative Project Management techniques should use owing to the effect of technology and its influence on organizational processes. It is an essential aspect of many growth strategy. Society gains much greater benefits from the same sources with the value added of the innovation. Therefore, innovation is not only economic and business system but also it is a social system. Innovation is located within a dynamic environment which is especially affected by the following elements; technology firms, market uncertainties, rapid change, shortened product life cycle, and globalization. Therefore; it is inevitable for organizations to be innovative for sustainability, for competition, for being able to grow and leading their market. This thesis, with a case study and research about Innovative Project Management examines the functioning of an innovative based company about UPS - (Uninterrupted Power Supply) project in electronics industry. The study also strives to discover the added value to the UPS project through Innovative Project Management.Yayın The relationship between patents and economic growth: a panel VAR and causality analyses on OECD countries(Işık Üniversitesi, 2023-06-21) Özkan Yıldız, Öznur; Görkey, Selda; Işık Üniversitesi, Lisansüstü Eğitim Enstitüsü, Uygulamalı Ekonomi Yüksek Lisans ProgramıThe patent subject requires a comprehensive analysis both theoretically and empirically as it is related to many concepts. Patenting is important not only for the patent owner, but also for society and the country. Over the years, the causes of economic growth have been put forward in various ways in different growth models. Sustainable economic growth can be achieved by the creation of innovation by industries that carry out R&D activities and the continuous feeding of innovation with R&D, according to R&D-based endogenous growth models. The innovation process is depicted as a cumulative one in which new innovations build on past achievements. Empirical evidence demonstrates that patents, as a form of intellectual property rights contribute to economic growth. Especially in knowledge-based new economies, patents play a essential role in the decisions of countries and companies to invest in innovation. This study first theoretically reviews the economic effects of patent and patent system. For this purpose, it explains the impact of patents on economic growth, starting from their role as an innovation indicator and considering the main benefits of the patent system. The study then empirically investigates the relationship between patents and economic growth for a panel of OECD countries between 1990 and 2019. By employing panel vector autoregression (VAR) approach and panel-VAR Granger causality analysis, the research distinguishes patents into patent applications and grants. According to the findings of the Granger causality analysis, there is no two-way causality relationship between patents and economic growth, but there is a causality relationship from patents to economic growth. The findings from the empirical estimates confirm a significant contribution of patents to economic growth in OECD countries. The empirical results show that an improvement in patent grants play a decisive role rather than patent applications in enchancing gross domestic product.Yayın Rasyonalite ve akışkanlık: modernist örgüt kuramlarının kompleksite düşüncesi ekseninde tahlili(Doğuş Üniversitesi, 2011-01-01) Yüksel, Ahmet HakanModernist düşünce akımının örgütleri mekanik sistemler olarak tanımlamasının bir yansıması olan makina metaforunun etkisi altında geliştirilmiş örgütsel kuramların temel varsayımlarının günümüzün kompleks küresel ortamında işlerliği sorgulanır hale gelmiştir. Whether this diversity is reflected in the mainstream TM research agenda is an important issue. Thus, the aim of this study is in two folds; first, to examine how the general research agenda of TM discipline has evolved in the academic research in a developing country context, namely Turkey, and next, whether this research agenda has converged or diverged with the patterns of mainstream TM research in international journals, by analyzing the Turkish academics TM publications both in the national and international scientific journals. The findings reveal that the TM discipline in Turkey indicates both divergent and convergent characteristics when compared with the results of recent studies about developed and developing countries.Yayın Optimization of wastewater treatment systems for growing industrial parks(Elsevier B.V., 2023-12-20) Savun Hekimoğlu, Başak; İşler, Zülal; Hekimoğlu, Mustafa; Burak, Selmin; Karlı, Deniz; Yücekaya, Ahmet; Akpınar, Ersin; Ediger, Volkan Ş.Wastewater treatment is one of the crucial functions of industrial parks as wastewater from industrial facilities usually contains toxic compounds that can cause damage to the environment. To control their environmental loads, industrial parks make investment decisions for wastewater treatment plants. For this, they need to consider technical and economic factors as well as future growth projections as substantial construction and operational costs of wastewater treatment plants have to be shared by all companies in an industrial park. In this paper, we consider the long-term capacity planning problem for wastewater treatment facilities of a stochastically growing industrial park. By explicitly modeling randomness in the arrival of new tenants and their random wastewater discharges, our model calculates the future mean and variance of wastewater flow in the industrial park. Mean and variance are used in a Mixed Integer Programming Model to optimize wastewater treatment plant selection over a long planning horizon (30 years). By fitting our first model to empirical data from an industrial park in Turkey, we find that considering the variance of wastewater load is critical for long-term planning. Also, we quantify the economic significance of lowering wastewater discharges which can be achieved by water recycling or interplant water exchange.
