    Driver recognition using gaussian mixture models and decision fusion techniques

    In this paper we present our research in driver recognition. The goal of this study is to investigate the performance of different classifier fusion techniques in a driver recognition scenario. We are using solely driving behavior signals such as break and accelerator pedal pressure, engine RPM, vehicle speed; steering wheel angle for identifying the driver identities. We modeled each driver using Gaussian Mixture Models, obtained posterior probabilities of identities and combined these scores using different fixed mid trainable (adaptive) fusion methods. We observed error rates is low as 0.35% in recognition of 100 drivers using trainable combiners. We conclude that the fusion of multi-modal classifier results is very successful in biometric recognition of a person in a car setting.

    Temperature effect on drying and swelling of kappa carrageenan gels: A steady state fluorescence study

    A novel technique based on in situ steady state fluorescence (SSF) measurements is introduced for studying drying and swelling Of kappa(-) carrageenan (kappa carrageenan) gels at various temperatures. kappa(-) carrageenan gels were completely dried and then swelled in water vapor. Pyranine was embedded in kappa(-) carrageenan and used as a fluorescence probe. Scattered light intensities, I-SC and fluorescence intensities, I were monitored during the drying and swelling Of kappa(-) carrageenan gels. it was observed that the fluorescence intensity decreased linearly as drying time was increased. A simple model consisting of Case II diffusion was used to quantify the drying processes of the kappa(-) carrageenan gels. This moving boundary model provided packing constant, kappa(o). During swelling, fluorescence intensity increased exponentially as time is increased. The increase in I, was modeled using Li-Tanaka equation from which swelling time constants, tau(c) and cooperative diffusion coefficients, D-c were determined. It was observed that swelling time constants, tau(c) decreased and diffusion coefficients, D-c increased as the swelling temperature was increased. Activation energies for drying and swelling were also obtained and found to be 53.9 and 47.2 kJ mol(-1), respectively.

    Design of a new low loss fully CMOS tunable floating active inductor

    In this paper, a new tunable floating active inductor based on a modified tunable grounded active inductor is proposed. The multi regulated cascade stage is used in the proposed active structure to decrease the parasitic series resistance of active inductor, thus the Q factor enhancement is obtained. Furthermore, the arrangement of this stage leads to the smaller input transistor which determines active inductor’s self-resonance frequency and to be free of body effect which is crucial in sub-micron technology. Symmetrical design strategy has enabled both ports of the proposed floating active inductor to demonstrate the same properties. The Q factor and active inductor value are tuned with bias current and flexible capacitance (varactor), respectively. The self-resonance frequency of floating active inductor (~6.2 GHz) is almost the same as grounded prototype. In addition, the proposed active inductor also shows higher quality factor and inductance value compared to the conventional floating active inductor circuits. To show the performance of suggested circuit, simulations are done by using a 0.18 µm CMOS process, which demonstrates an adjustable quality factor of 10–567 with an inductance value range of 6–284 nH. Total DC power consumption and occupied area are 2 mW and 934.4 µm2, respectively.

    A design technique of 50 Ω terminated bandpass matching network and its implementation to a Y-shaped monopole antenna matching

    In this paper, a 50 Ω terminated or in other words transformerless bandpass matching network design methodology and an implementation example are presented. The real frequency techniques are powerful numerical methods to design wideband lossless two-port networks such as filters, matching networks and amplifiers. In these techniques, the value of the termination resistance of the designed network could not be yielded as 50 Ω by numerical package. Hence, a transformer is also required for 50 Ω termination which is not practical for high frequency applications. By employing the proposed procedure, it is guaranteed to obtain transformerless bandpass matching network. Also in this study a wideband suspended monopole antenna is examined. The proposed antenna consists of two major elements; Y-shaped impedance matching plate and hemi-circular radiator. Moreover Y-shaped impedance matching plate connected to a feeding probe excites the suspended hemi-circular radiator via air gap. Consequently, a transformerless bandpass matching network is designed to filter and expand the operational frequency bandwidth of the proposed antenna. It has been observed that ideal circuit and the layout of the matching network simulation have good agreement.

    ICamp - The educational web for higher education

    iCamp is an EC-funded research project in the area of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) that aims to support collaboration and social networking across systems, countries and disciplines in higher education. The concept of an iCamp Space will build on existing interfaces and integrate shared community features. Interoperability amongst different open source learning systems and tools is the key to successful sustainability of iCamp. The content for this collaboration within social communities is provided via distributed networked repositories including, for example, content brokerage platforms, online libraries, and learning object databases. The innovative pedagogical model of iCamp is based on social constructivist learning theories. iCamp creates an environment for a new way of social networking in higher education that puts more emphasis on self-organised, self-directed learning, social networking and cross-cultural collaboration.

    Metamutator applications: a quadrature MOS only oscillator and transconductance/transimpedance amplifiers

    NMOS based circuit realizations of a sinusoidal quadrature oscillator, a transconductance, a transimpedance amplifier are presented. All the circuits are constructed with a voltage-mode “Metamutator” consisting of an analog adder and a subtractor which is one of its possible realizations. The most important feature of the proposed circuits is their extremely simple structures containing only twelve NMOS transistors (six for adder, six for subtractor). Another significant advantage of the proposed circuits is that no external passive element is needed for the oscillator and only one resistor is used for each amplifier circuit; a variable resistor can provide gain adjustability. The post-layout simulations of all the proposed circuits have been executed using TSMC 0.25 µm process parameters with ±1.25 V power supply voltage.

    An effective maintenance policy for a multi-component dynamic system using factored POMDPs

    With the latest advances in technology, almost all systems are getting substantially more uncertain and complex. Since increased complexity costs more, it is challenging to cope with this situation. Maintenance optimization plays a critical role in ensuring effective decision-making on the correct maintenance actions in multi-component systems. A Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) is an appropriate framework for such problems. Nevertheless, POMDPs are rarely used for tackling maintenance problems. This study aims to formulate and solve a factored POMDP model to tackle the problems that arise with maintenance planning of multi-component systems. An empirical model consisting of four partially observable components deteriorating in time is constructed. We resort to Symbolic Perseus solver, which includes an adapted variant of the point-based value iteration algorithm, to solve the empirical model. The obtained maintenance policy is simulated on the empirical model in a finite horizon for many replications and the results are compared to the other predefined maintenance policies. Drawing upon the policy results of the factored representation, we present how factored POMDPs offer an effective maintenance policy for the multi-component systems.

    In situ fluorescence study of swelling, sorption and desorption processes in and out of PAAm gels

    Small molecule sorption and desorption in and out of polyacrylamide (PAAm) gels were studied at various temperatures. Pyranine (P(y)) dissolved in water used as a probe. Fluorescence emission intensity, I(p) from P(y) was monitored for studying sorption and desorption processes. Scattered light intensities, I(SC) from PAAm gel was also monitored to observed structural variations during sorption and desorption process. Li-Tanaka model was applied to produce the swelling time constants, tau(C) and sorption coefficients, D(C) for the swelling processes. on the other hand, sorption and desorption processes were studied and coefficients were produced by using Fickian model. Related activation energies were also calculated from the corresponding physical processes.

    Current inverting metamutator, its implementation with a new single active device and applications

    A new kind of metamutator, namely "Current Inverting Metamutator", its realizations using different types of active blocks and some of its applications like voltage-mode universal biquadratic filter with three input and one output terminals are presented. The proposed circuits can realize all standard filters, namely, low-pass, band-pass, high-pass, notch and all-pass without passive component matching conditions. The proposed circuit offers the features of using grounded capacitors and orthogonal controllability of angular frequency and quality factor. Then a novel realization of metamutator with one active device, additive and differential IC (AD-IC) is proposed and implemented with twelve transistors only. The metamutator with AD-IC has the advantages: (1) of creating new realizations of memristors, capacitance multipliers, inductor simulators, frequency dependent negative resistors which can be used to make IC active filters, (2) less is the number (only one) of active devices, less is the amount of disparity, (3) no need to match passive component values.

    On travelling wave solutions of a generalized Davey-Stewartson system

    The generalized Davey-Stewartson (GDS) equations, as derived by Babaoglu & Erbay (2004, Int. J. Non-Linear Mech., 39, 941-949), is a system of three coupled equations in (2 + 1) dimensions modelling wave propagation in an infinite elastic medium. The physical parameters (gamma, m(1), m(2), lambda and n) of the system allow one to classify the equations as elliptic-elliptic-elliptic (EEE), elliptic-elliptic-hyperbolic (EEH), elliptic-hyperbolic-hyperbolic (EHH), hyperbolic-elliptic-elliptic (HEE), hyperbolic-hyperbolic-hyperbolic (HHH) and hyperbolic-elliptic-hyperbolic (HEH) (Babaoglu et al., 2004, preprint). In this note, we only consider the EEE and HEE cases and seek travelling wave solutions to GDS systems. By deriving Pohozaev-type identities we establish some necessary conditions on the parameters for the existence of travelling waves, when solutions satisfy some integrability conditions. Using the explicit solutions given in Babaoglu & Erbay (2004) we also show that the parameter constraints must be weaker in the absence of such integrability conditions.
