New criteria for the existence of stable equilibrium points in nonsymmetric cellular neural networks
(IEEE, 2003) Özcan, Neyir; Arık, Sabri; Tavşanoğlu, Ahmet Vedat
A new criteria for the existence of stable equilibrium points in nonsymmetric cellular neural networks (CNN) was presented. It was shown that the results obtained can be used to derive some complete stability conditions for some special classes of CNNs such as positive cell-linking CNNs, opposite-sign CNNs and dominant-template CNNs. The model of the CNN whose dynamical behavior was described by the state equations was discussed.

    Budding trees
(IEEE Computer Soc, 2014-08-24) İrsoy, Ozan; Yıldız, Olcay Taner; Alpaydın, Ahmet İbrahim Ethem
We propose a new decision tree model, named the budding tree, where a node can be both a leaf and an internal decision node. Each bud node starts as a leaf node, can then grow children, but then later on, if necessary, its children can be pruned. This contrasts with traditional tree construction algorithms that only grows the tree during the training phase, and prunes it in a separate pruning phase. We use a soft tree architecture and show that the tree and its parameters can be trained using gradient-descent. Our experimental results on regression, binary classification, and multi-class classification data sets indicate that our newly proposed model has better performance than traditional trees in terms of accuracy while inducing trees of comparable size.

Complex and real rays in three dimensional Minkowski space
    (IEEE, 2002) Hasanoğlu, Elman
A new approach to the theory of complex rays is proposed. It is shown that the Minkowski space is more appropriate for describing these rays than the usual, Euclidian spaces. Some illustrative examples are represented.

    A cost-efficient bit-serial architecture for sub-pixel motion estimation of H.264/AVC
(IEEE Computer Soc, 2008) Fatemi, Mohammad Reza Hosseiny; Ateş, Hasan Fehmi; Salleh, Rosli Bin
This paper presents a new VLSI architecture for sub-pixel motion estimation in H.264/AVC encoder. It is based on an interpolation free algorithm that causes a high level reduction on memory requirement, hardware resources and computational complexity. A high performance, bit-serial pipeline architecture is proposed for quarter pixel accurate motion estimation which supports real-time H.264 encoding. Due to the bit-serial, modular and reusable architecture, it provides significant improvement in area cost (at least 390) and increases the macroblock processing speed almost 6 times when compared with the previous designs. The proposed architecture is suitable for portable multimedia devices where the memory and power consumption are limited.
