Yayın The role of cross-group friendships, outgroup perspective-taking, and ingroup identification on competitive victimhood beliefs(Turkish Psychologists Association, 2021-12) Bağcı, Sabahat Çiğdem; Piyale, Zeynep Ecem; Karaköse, Selin; Şen, EzgiIn conflict-ridden societies, both groups often believe that they are the sole undeserved victim of the conflict. The current study aimed to examine Turkish and Kurdish ethnic group members’ competitive victimhood beliefs in the context of intergroup contact theory and investigate whether two social-psychological variables – outgroup perspective-taking and ingroup identification – significantly mediated this association. The sample consisted of 234 participants (142 Turkish and 92 Kurdish; 152 Females, 81 Males, 1 Unknown; Mage = 22.39, SD = 3.96). Participants completed online surveys including demographic information, and measures of intergroup contact (cross-group friendship quality), outgroup perspective-taking, ingroup identification, and competitive victimhood beliefs. Findings demonstrated that the quality of cross-group friendships was negatively associated with competitive victimhood beliefs and as expected this association was significantly mediated by increased outgroup perspective-taking and decreased ingroup identification. Results imply the need to study intergroup contact and competitive victimhood beliefs simultaneously to facilitate the understanding of reconciliation processes in conflictual intergroup relationships.Yayın Failure of an exchange-rate-based stabilization plan in Turkey(M E Sharpe, 2003-02) Gökkent, Giyas; Moslares, Carlos; Amiel-Saenz, RafaelThe Turkish exchange-rate-based stabilization plan adopted in 2000 has been a spectacular failure, lasting a mere fourteen months despite a relatively flexible peg regime and preannounced exit strategy. The final three months of the currency regime were marred by the eruption of a banking sector crisis that quickly developed into a currency crisis, quelled only by external loans and a blanket guarantee by the sovereign of all banking sector liabilities. This was ultimately to no avail as the lira was allowed to float following a full-fledged currency crisis in late February 2001. The usual indicators of crisis did not point to imminent turmoil in November 2000 despite widespread concern about eventual dire developments. To identify the source of the November crisis, one must weigh the factors that led economic agents, and banks in particular, to expect higher interest rates after the fall.Yayın Polish-Russian relations: history, geography and geopolitics(East European Quarterly, 2008-03) Özbay, Fatih; Aras, Bülent[No abstract available]Yayın Religious solidarity, historical mission and moral superiority: construction of external and internal "others' in AKP's discourses on Syrian refugees in Turkey(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2018-10-20) Karakaya Polat, RabiaTurkey hosts the world's largest community of displaced Syrians. According to UNHCR, there are more than 3 million registered Syrians in Turkey as of 2018. Since the beginning of the conflict in Syria in 2011, Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has followed an open-door policy, which was accompanied by a discourse emphasizing religious solidarity and humanitarian values. However, the arrival of Syrian refugees has become entangled with the existing identity debates and conflicts in Turkish politics. The AKP's discourse on Syrian refugees has become intertwined with its positive self-representation as the defender of all oppressed people (mazlum) and its attempts to reconstruct the Turkish nation along more Islamic lines. The article analyses parliamentary debates and presidential speeches in order to unravel AKP discourses on Syrian refugees. Drawing upon the Discourse Historical Approach in Critical Discourse Analysis, the article puts forward two arguments. First, the refugee issue has become a constitutive component of AKP identity and a discursive tool to reconstruct the nation along more Islamic lines. Second, Turkey's refugee policy has become a source of pride and enabled the AKP to claim moral superiority both vis-a-vis the West and its political opponents at home.Yayın Influence of ABCB1 polymorphisms and serum concentrations on venlafaxine response in patients with major depressive disorder(Taylor and Francis Ltd, 2017-04) Özbey, Gül; Çam Çelikel, Feryal; Cumurcu, Birgül Elbozan; Kan, Derya; Yücel, Berna; Hasbek, Ekrem; Perçin, Ferda Emriye; Güzey, İsmail Cüneyt; Uluoǧlu, CananBackground: The pharmacokinetics and the pharmacodynamics of antidepressants show large inter-individual variations which result in unpredictable clinical responses. Aim: The aim of the study was to examine the effect of ABCB1 polymorphisms and the serum concentrations on the efficacy and tolerability of venlafaxine in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Methods: Fifty-two outpatients who met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) criteria for MDD were recruited for the study. The severity of depression was assessed using the 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression scale (HDRS17) and tolerability was assessed based on a query regarding side-effects for 6 weeks. The ABCB1 C3435T/A and G2677T/A polymorphisms were genotyped by PCR/RFLP and steady-state serum venlafaxine concentrations were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography. Results: Patients with the TT genotype for the C3435T and the TT/TA genotype for the G2677T/A polymorphism showed significantly higher frequencies in venlafaxine-induced akathisia. This relationship was not observed for efficacy. As regards serum venlafaxine concentrations, patient groups showed no significant differences in efficacy and tolerability. Conclusion: The results suggest that individuals with the TT-TT/TA genotypes for the C3435T-G2677T/A polymorphisms of ABCB1 may be pre-disposed to a risk of akathisia.Yayın Afghanistan's security: Political process, state-building and narcotics(Wiley-Blackwell, 2008-06) Aras, Bülent; Toktaş, ŞuleEstablishing political authority and constructing a state instrument would increase trust, which would contribute to stability.1 The lack of political institutions necessary for stability encourages the interference of individuals and groups with "special" interests, at both the state and societal levels.2 Stability is not only a prerequisite for the development of the political process and security within the country; it is also a risk to security, as it would require the involvement of groups and factors in the political process that might hinder security itself. [...] in a setting where fierce security measures are needed, running security operations without supplying adequate security personnel and munitions is an absolute risk.48 CONCLUSION The long-term objective for Afghanistan is to strengthen the state structurally and to set mechanisms in place that would prevent it from working only for narrow or factional interests.Yayın Turkey’s military victory over the PKK and its failure to end the PKK insurgency(Routledge journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2015-09-03) Kayhan Pusane, ÖzlemThis article explores the major reasons why Turkey could not end the PKK insurgency despite its military defeat in the late 1990s. It argues that Turkish governments have failed to sufficiently address two key aspects of their low-intensity conflict with the PKK, namely the fact that the PKK is not just a group of armed militants, but rather a complex insurgent organization and that it appeals to a large number of Kurds. Turkey's inability to definitively quell the PKK insurgency raises significant questions regarding the justification and effectiveness of the use of military force in dealing with insurgencies. Yayın Europe, Turkey and the Middle East: Is harmonisation possible?(H.W. Wilson - Social Science Abstracts, 2006-09) Aras, Bülent; Bıçakcı, Ahmet SalihThe possibility of Turkey joining the European Union (EU) has generated much debate in both the EU and the Middle East--interest that Turkey has interpreted as a clear signal that it could be a powerful regional player. Indeed, Turkey's new ruling elite is sure that it can hold an active peacemaking role in the Middle East. Together, the EU and Turkey will be much stronger in the Middle East than either could be alone. Without the EU, Turkey would face the disadvantage of dealing with Middle East insecurity and instability by itself; the EU would miss the chance to embrace a democratic, Muslim country that already takes a pro-European stance in Middle East affairs. Therefore, harmonization of Turkish and EU policies is not only possible but, to a certain extent, necessary.Yayın Staying the course: Permanent bases in Iraq?
