Yayın Are your cross-ethnic friends ethnic and/or national group identifiers?The role of own and perceived cross-ethnic friend's identities on outgroup attitudes and multiculturalism(Wiley, 2018-02-01) Bağcı Hemşinlioğlu, Sabahat Çiğdem; Çelebi, ElifWe investigated how own ethnic and national identities and perceived ethnic and national identities of close cross-ethnic friends may predict outgroup attitudes and multiculturalism among Turkish (majority status, N=197) and Kurdish (minority status, N=80) ethnic group members in Turkey (M-age=21.12, SD=2.59, 69.7% females, 30.3% males). Compared with Turkish participants, Kurdish participants were more asymmetrical in rating their cross-ethnic friend's identities relative to their own, reporting higher ethnic identity, but lower national identity for themselves. Own ethnic identity was negatively associated with attitudes and multiculturalism, whereas own national identity was positively associated with only attitudes. Perceived cross-ethnic friend's national identity was positively related to both outgroup attitudes and multiculturalism. Shared national identification (high levels of own and friend's national identity) led to most positive outgroup attitudes and highest support for multiculturalism. Findings were discussed in the light of social identity and common ingroup identity models.Yayın Reciprocal relations between the trajectories of mothers’ harsh discipline, responsiveness and aggression in early childhood(Springer New York LLC, 2018-01-01) Akçinar Yayla, Berna; Baydar, NazlıTheoretical advances in the study of the development of aggressive behaviors indicate that parenting behaviors and child aggression mutually influence one another. This study contributes to the body of empirical research in this area by examining the development of child aggression, maternal responsiveness, and maternal harsh discipline, using 5-year longitudinal data from a nationally representative sample of Turkish children (n = 1009; 469 girls and 582 boys). Results indicated that: (i) maternal responsiveness and harsh discipline at age 3 were associated with the subsequent linear trajectory of aggression; (ii) reciprocally, aggressive behaviors at age 3 were associated with the subsequent linear trajectories of these two types of parenting behaviors; (iii) deviations from the linear trajectories of the child and mother behaviors tended to be short lived; and, (iv) the deviations of child behaviors from the linear trajectories were associated with the subsequent changes in mother behaviors after age 5. These findings are discussed in the cultural context of this study.Yayın Independent contributions of early positive parenting and mother-son coercion on emerging social development(Springer, 2018-06) Akçinar Yayla, Berna; Shaw, Daniel S.In the current study, we explored associations between parent-child coercion and positive parenting in the toddler period in relation to children's social-behavioral development during the school-age period. The data were drawn from the Pitt Mother & Child Project, a sample of 310 low-income, ethnically diverse boys. Drawing on tenets of both attachment and social learning theory, it was hypothesized that coercive mother-son interaction would lead to reductions in positive maternal parenting in the toddler period, and that both positive parenting and mother-son coercion in the toddler period would contribute to children's conduct problems at school entry and lower social skills and peer rejection in middle childhood. The results were largely confirmed, such that mother-son coercive interaction at 18 months was related to decreases in positive parenting at 24 months. Additionally, mother-son coercive interaction and positive parenting at 24 months were linked to child conduct problems at age 5, which in turn predicted child social skills and peer rejection during middle childhood. In addition to indirect effects through child conduct problems, mother-son coercion continued to be independently related to school-age peer rejection. The findings are discussed with respect to the importance of early coercive interactions in the growth of child social-behavioral development from early to middle childhood.Yayın Ethnic identification, discrimination, and mental and physical health among Syrian refugees: The moderating role of identity needs(Wiley, 2017-12) Çelebi, Elif; Verkuyten, Maykel; Bağcı Hemşinlioğlu, Sabahat ÇiğdemUsing a risk and resilience framework and motivated identity construction theory, we investigated the moderating role of identity needs in the association between social identification and perceived discrimination with mental and physical health among a sample of Syrian refugees (N = 361) in Turkey. Results showed that there were two clusters of interrelated identity needs, namely, belonging (belonging, continuity, and esteem) and efficacy (efficacy, meaningfulness, and distinctiveness). Higher perceived ethnic discrimination was found to be associated with poorer mental and physical health but not for respondents who derived a sense of efficacy from their Syrian identity. Higher Syrian identification was associated with lower depression and anxiety but more strongly for refugees who derived a sense of belonging and continuity from their Syrian identity. The findings indicate that investigating the motivational aspects of identity formation is important for understanding when discrimination and group identification undermine or rather contribute to the well-being and health of refugees. These findings are discussed in relation to the growing research on social identities and health.Yayın Exploring the impact of Flash technique on test anxiety among adolescents(SAGE Publications Ltd, 2025-07) Çitil Akyol, Canan; İnci İzmir, Sevim BerrinThis study aims to investigate the specific effects of Flash Technique (FT) on adolescents with test anxiety. This follow-up study consists of 38 adolescents, 14–17 years of age (M = 15.39, SD = 1.13). Pre-post assessments were conducted using the Test Anxiety Inventory (TAI), Scale of Attitudes Negatively Affecting the Performance I/Test (POET), and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) at baseline, at the end of the 4thand 12thweeks of therapy. The FT was applied for 12 weeks, with one weekly session as an intervention. As a result of the therapy process, the baseline means of total BAI scores decreased from 25.26 to 2.18; the baseline means of TAI decreased from 149.79 to 39.13, and the baseline mean of POET decreased from 298.47 to 73.84 at the end of the 12th week of therapy. Also, the baseline means of SUD scores decreased from 9.42 to zero at the end of the 12th week of treatment. All the adolescents showed complete improvement after the 12th week of the FT. The study findings showed that the test anxiety symptoms significantly decreased with the treatment of the FT. FT can be an effective intervention for test anxiety in adolescents.Yayın The comparison of psychological factors and executive functions of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome to ADHD and ADHD comorbid with Oppositional Defiant Disorder(SAGE Publications Inc., 2024-10) İnci İzmir, Sevim Berrin; Aktan, Zekeriya Deniz; Ercan, Eyüp SabriObjective: The study aims to examine family functionality, emotion regulation difficulties, preference for loneliness, social exclusion, internalizing and externalizing disorders, and executive functions in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome (CDS) and compare with ADHD, and ADHD+ Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Method: This study included 842 children aged 8–12 years. The subjects were categorized according to DSM-V as ADHD (n = 246), ADHD + ODD (n = 212), ADHD + CDS (n = 176), and Control group (n = 207). The solitude and social exclusion, difficulties in emotion dysregulation and Barkley SCT scales, Child Behavior Checklist, family assessment device, and Central Vital Signs (CNSVS) test were used. Results: According to the study, children with ADHD + CDS had higher rates of internalizing disorders. They also preferred being alone and experienced more difficulty communicating with their parents and solving problems within the family. Additionally, these children had difficulty recognizing and understanding the emotional reactions of others. The ADHD + ODD group presented a poorer performance on CNSVS domain tests except for the psychomotor speed test than other groups. Also, ADHD + CDS children had the lowest psychomotor speed scores and lower scores on reaction time and cognitive flexibility than pure ADHD children. Conclusion: This study will contribute to the etiology, treatment, and clinical discrimination of ADHD + CDS.Yayın A novel approach to non-invasive intracranial pressure wave monitoring: a pilot healthy brain study(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2025-06-28) Karaliunas, Andrius; Bartusis, Laimonas; Krakauskaite, Solventa; Chaleckas, Edvinas; Deimantavicius, Mantas; Hamarat, Yasin; Petkus, Vytautas; Stulge, Toma; Ratkunas, Vytenis; Çelikkaya, Güven; Januleviciene, Ingrida; Ragauskas, ArminasIntracranial pressure (ICP) pulse wave morphology, including the ratios of the three characteristic peaks (P1, P2, and P3), offers valuable insights into intracranial dynamics and brain compliance. Traditional invasive methods for ICP pulse wave monitoring pose significant risks, highlighting the need for non-invasive alternatives. This pilot study investigates a novel non-invasive method for monitoring ICP pulse waves through closed eyelids, using a specially designed, liquid-filled, fully passive sensor system named ‘Archimedes 02’. To our knowledge, this is the first technological approach that enables the non-invasive monitoring of ICP pulse waveforms via closed eyelids. This study involved 10 healthy volunteers, aged 26–39 years, who underwent resting-state non-invasive ICP pulse wave monitoring sessions using the ‘Archimedes 02’ device while in the supine position. The recorded signals were processed to extract pulse waves and evaluate their morphological characteristics. The results indicated successful detection of pressure pulse waves, showing the expected three peaks (P1, P2, and P3) in all subjects. The calculated P2/P1 ratios were 0.762 (SD = ±0.229) for the left eye and 0.808 (SD = ±0.310) for the right eye, suggesting normal intracranial compliance across the cohort, despite variations observed in some individuals. Physiological tests—the Valsalva maneuver and the Queckenstedt test, both performed in the supine position—induced statistically significant increases in the P2/P1 and P3/P1 ratios, supporting the notion that non-invasively recorded pressure pulse waves, measured through closed eyelids, reflect intracranial volume and pressure dynamics. Additionally, a transient hypoemic/hyperemic response test performed in the upright position induced signal changes in pressure recordings from the ‘Archimedes 02’ sensor that were consistent with intact cerebral blood flow autoregulation, aligning with established physiological principles. Although language-related symptoms such as disorganized speech were predicted by the polygenic risk for SZ which emphasized the common genetic liability for the disease, few studies investigated possible white matter integrity abnormalities in the language-related tracts in those at familial high-risk for SZ. Also, their results are not consistent. In this current study, we examined possible aberrations in language-related white matter tracts in patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP, N = 20), their siblings (SIB, N = 20), and healthy controls (CON, N = 20) by applying whole-brain Tract-Based Spatial Statistics and region-of-interest analyses. We also assessed language ability by Thought and Language Index (TLI) using Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) pictures and verbal fluency to see whether the scores of these language tests would predict the differences in these tracts. We found significant alterations in language-related tracts such as inferior longitudinal fasciculus (ILF) and uncinate fasciculus (UF) among three groups and between SIB and CON. We also proved partly their relationship with the language test as indicated by the significant correlation detected between TLI Impoverished thought/language sub-scale and ILF. We could not find any difference between FEP and CON. These results showed that the abnormalities, especially in the ILF and UF, could be important pathophysiological vulnerability indexes of schizophrenia. Further studies are required to understand better the role of language as a possible endophenotype in schizophrenia with larger samples.Yayın Reliability of direct-to-home teleneuropsychological assessment: a within-subject design study(Routledge, 2025-07-04) Yıldırım, Elif; Soncu Büyükişcan, Ezgi; Akça Kalem, Şükriye; Gürvit, HakanObjective: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the need to continue diagnosis and treatment processes, in addition to scientific research, led to a rapid shift towards direct-to-home tele-neuropsychology administrations, the reliability and validity of which had not been clearly established then. This study, therefore, aimed to examine the reliability of direct-to-home tele-neuropsychological assessment (TNP). Method: The sample included 105 cognitively healthy individuals aged between 50–83 years, and 47 patients diagnosed with neurocognitive disorders (mild cognitive impairment and early-stage Alzheimer’s type dementia). All participants underwent both face-to-face and teleneuropsychological assessments in a counterbalanced order. Results: The results revealed that performances across measures of attention, working memory, verbal fluency, verbal and visual memory, and visual perception were comparable across assessment modalities. Intraclass correlation coefficients of the tests ranged from.54 to.92. Conclusions: The findings of the study provide support for direct-to-home teleneuropsychological assessment among patients with neurocognitive disorders. Neuropsychological tests relying on verbal administration and independent of motor performance may represent a reliable alternative for this patient group when administered in settings where external distractions or technological limitations are controlled. For cognitively healthy individuals, on the other hand, the reliability of the TNP application is more questionable for memory and some executive function tests and therefore needs further exploration.
