Yayın The political incorporation of labor in Turkey: tracing the origins of a nationalist path(Cambridge University Press, 2021-09-13) Apaydın, Fulya; Ülker, ErolThis study makes an important contribution to the literature on labor incorporation in developing areas based on existing historiography and archival material from Turkey. Specifically, we argue that the political incorporation of labor during the early period of state building is strongly influenced by elite preferences over who constitutes the nation. In doing so, we address a neglected dimension by putting the emphasis on ethnoreligious politics: the founders of modern Turkey pushed for a homogenizing program that prioritized Muslim-Turks over other minority groups, eventually paving the way to the state-led incorporation of labor. This is different from the experience of most Latin American countries that the existing literature draws on. Our findings make an important contribution to theoretical debates by highlighting the subtle link between nation-building and the pathways of labor incorporation in developing contexts.Yayın Culture and silviculture: origins and evolution of silviculture in Southeast Europe(Commonwealth Forestry Assoc, 2018-03) O'Hara, Kevin L.; Bončína, Andrej; Diaci, Jurij; Anić, Igor D.; Boydak, Melih; Čurović, Milić; Govedar, Zoran V.; Grigoriadis, Nikolaos; Ivojevic, S.; Keren, Srđan; Kola, H.; Kostov, G.; Medarević, Milan J.; Metaj, M.; Nicolescu, N. V.; Raifailov, G.; Stăncioiu, Petru Tudor; Velkovski, NikolcoSilvicultural practices are generally developed to meet societal objectives given the constraints of the site. This simple premise is a foundation of modern silviculture. However, silviculture may vary for other reasons related to cultural factors. This paper reviews the differences in silviculture in the twelve countries that comprise southeastern Europe, an area that includes a variety of cultures, and a complex history. The silviculture generally follows three models: coppice systems that are largely unregulated, even-aged stands that include former coppice stands and other reforested sites, and systems to develop and maintain complex stand structures. Plantation management is not common. Cultural and historic drivers have affected the development of silviculture in this region. Additional drivers include forest access, the importance of wood for fuel, and proximity to central Europe. It is anticipated that European Union membership of countries in the region will lead to greater regional and international exchange and cooperation in the future.Yayın Nâmık Kemal and his utopian dream about freedom(English Language and Literature Association of Korea, 2021) Edman, Timuçin Buğra; Gözen, HacerBorn in 1840, Nâmık Kemal left his mark on Turkish and world literature. He was one of the pioneers of the Ottoman Reform era. Due to Nâmık Kemal's pioneering endeavors and his writings that purported to enlighten the society and expostulate on the political descension occurring during his time under the rule of Abdulaziz, the 32nd Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Kemal was twice sent into exile. During these exiles, he deepened his knowledge and academic background further, explored new worlds, and wrote Dream. This study deduces how, in contrast to its apparent meaning, Nâmık Kemal's choice of title for his “utopia” was meant to suggest a sarcastic condition, indeed one that he might have intentionally created while he was ostracized in Famagusta, Cyprus. Nâmık Kemal's utopia, Dream, consists of a “dream” that he claims to have had while in a mansion overlooking Bosphorus in Istanbul. Dream, in an ironic way, is actually Nâmık Kemal's collection of thoughts designed to agitate the Ottoman nation. This study subsumes Dream as a euchronia or a homotopical utopia that portrays a better society created in the same place in Istanbul and the Ottoman Empire. The study also reveals how Nâmık Kemal posited the social and local environments in Dream with the intent to influence future political, cultural, and social connotations and reasoning in his contemporary world. Through a comparative study of history and literature, this essay thus propounds how Nâmık Kemal actually intended to “shake” the people to awaken them from their long-lasting irresponsible sleep.Yayın The politics of population in a nation-building process: emigration of non-Muslims from Turkey(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2008-02) İçduygu, Ahmet; Toktaş, Şule; Soner, Bayram AliWithin the politics of nationalism and nation-building, the emigration of ethnic and religious minorities, whether voluntary or involuntary, appears to be a commonly occurring practice. After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in the early twentieth century, modern Turkey still carried the legacy of a multi-ethnic, multi-religious diversity in which its Armenian, Greek and Jewish communities had official minority status based upon the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne. However, throughout the twentieth century, Turkey's non-Muslim minority populations have undergone a mass emigration experience in which thousands of their numbers have migrated to various countries around the globe. While in the 1920s the population of non-Muslims in the country was close to 3 per cent of the total, today it has dropped to less than two per thousand. This article analyses the emigration of non-Muslim people from Turkey and relates this movement to the wider context of nation-building in the country.Yayın Art Nouveau interiors in The Ottoman Empire: the case of Pera Palace hotel(Asos Yayınları, 2025-10-27) Erol, Eda; Karadağ, DeryaArt Nouveau, an influential art movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, shaped architectural and interior design across Europe and beyond. Focusing on the Ottoman Empire, this study explores the distinctive adaptation of Art Nouveau in Istanbul’s Pera and Galata districts, shaped by European influence and the integration of local cultural aesthetics. Through on-site observations, the research analyses the interior design of the Pera Palas Hotel, built in the late 19th century, classifying its features into interior materials and finishes, ornamental details, and furnishings. The findings reveal how Ottoman Art Nouveau harmonized global Art Nouveau motifs with Neo-Classical features and local aesthetic sensibilities, resulting in a distinctive hybrid style. This study contributes to understanding the cultural and architectural synthesis in Ottoman Art Nouveau, offering insights into its significance within global design trends and its legacy in Istanbul’s architectural history.Yayın Emperyalizm, Anti-Emperyalizm ve Osmanlı İmparatorluğu(Eğitim Sen, 2021-06) Ülker, ErolBu yazı geç dönem Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun emperyalizm ve sömürgecilik karşısındaki konumunu ve bu konuda tarih yazımında ortaya çıkan belli başlı eğilimleri tartışmayı amaçlamaktadır.
