Yayın Are your cross-ethnic friends ethnic and/or national group identifiers? The role of own and perceived cross-ethnic friend's identities on outgroup attitudes and multiculturalism(Wiley, 2018-02-01) Bağcı Hemşinlioğlu, Sabahat Çiğdem; Çelebi, ElifWe investigated how own ethnic and national identities and perceived ethnic and national identities of close cross-ethnic friends may predict outgroup attitudes and multiculturalism among Turkish (majority status, N=197) and Kurdish (minority status, N=80) ethnic group members in Turkey (M-age=21.12, SD=2.59, 69.7% females, 30.3% males). Compared with Turkish participants, Kurdish participants were more asymmetrical in rating their cross-ethnic friend's identities relative to their own, reporting higher ethnic identity, but lower national identity for themselves. Own ethnic identity was negatively associated with attitudes and multiculturalism, whereas own national identity was positively associated with only attitudes. Perceived cross-ethnic friend's national identity was positively related to both outgroup attitudes and multiculturalism. Shared national identification (high levels of own and friend's national identity) led to most positive outgroup attitudes and highest support for multiculturalism. Findings were discussed in the light of social identity and common ingroup identity models.Yayın Turkey's Kurdish opening: Long awaited achievements and failed expectations(Routledge Journals, 2014-01-02) Kayhan Pusane, ÖzlemTurkish state actors have used mainly military means to first suppress the Kurdish rebellions and then to end the PKK violence from 1984 onwards. However, after the AKP came to office in 2002, the government challenged the hardline state policy and initiated a Kurdish opening. This policy has the ultimate goal of disarming the PKK and resolving the Kurdish question. However, the Kurdish opening so far has failed to bring about the desired policy outcomes because the parties to the Kurdish question have been highly divided on the side of both the state and the Kurds in Turkey.Yayın The economic lot-sizing problem with perishable items and consumption order preference(Elsevier Science BV, 2015-08-01) Önal, Mehmet; Romeijn, H. Edwin; Sapra, Amar; Van den Heuvel, WilcoWe consider the economic lot-sizing problem with perishable items (ELS-PI), where each item has a deterministic expiration date. Although all items in stock are equivalent regardless of procurement or expiration date, we allow for an allocation mechanism that defines an order in which the items are allocated to the consumers. In particular, we consider the following allocation mechanisms: First Expiration, First Out (FEFO), Last Expiration, First Out (LEFO), First In, First Out (FIFO) and Last In, First Out (LIFO). We show that the ELS-PI can be solved in polynomial time under all four allocation mechanisms in case of no procurement capacities. This result still holds in case of time-invariant procurement capacities under the FIFO and LEFO allocation mechanisms, but the problem becomes NP-hard under the FEFO and LIFO allocation mechanisms.Yayın Effects of childhood trauma and clinical features on determining quality of life in patients with bipolar I disorder(Elsevier Science BV, 2014-06-20) Erten, Evrim; Funda Uney, Aslı; Saatçioğlu, İbrahim Ömer; Özdemir, Armağan; Fıstıkçı, Nurhan; Çakmak, DuranBackground: We explored how childhood trauma (CHT) affects the clinical expression of disorder and quality of life in patients with bipolar I (BP I) disorder. Methods: Euthymic patients (n=116) who subsequently received a diagnosis of BP-I disorder were consecutively included and were interviewed using the following sociodemographic and clinical data forms; Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), Childhood Abuse and Neglect Questionnaire (CANQ) and the 36 item Medical Outcome Study Short Form Health Survey (SF 36) The quality of life of BP-I patients with and without a history of CHT were examined. Results: The percentage of trauma was 61.2%. Patients who had CHT had higher frequencies of depressive episodes (t = -2.38, p=0.019), total episodes (t = -2.25, p=0.026), attempted suicide more often (chi(2)=18.12, p=0.003) and had lower scores on the pain subscale of Lhe SF 36 (z=-2.817, p=0.005). In patients with mixed or rapid-cycling episodes, SF-36 subscale scores except general health and pain were Found to be lower.Limitations: Our sample may fail to reflect the general BD population; the patients were included consecutively and consisted of a majority of female patients. Conclusions: CHT plays an important role in the clinical expression of BP-I disorder and having mixed/rapid-cycling episodes negatively affects both physical and mental components, as measured by the SF-36. While both males and females reported experiencing sexual abuse, female BP-I patients complained about pain more often. It is suggested that treatment of BP-1 patients with a history of CHT should differ from that provided for patients with no CHT history.Yayın Unnecessary bleeding, unnecessary suffering: normalcy and necessity of menstruation in promoting NovaSure (R)(Routledge, 2016-08) Erol Jamieson, MaralNovaSure (R) is an endometrial ablation procedure that destroys the inner lining of uterus to stop heavy bleeding. It is performed mostly on women entering menopause who are experiencing irregular and heavy bleeding. In this article, this biotechnology, promoted for women approaching the end of their reproductive life, is analyzed. The analysis is informed by a feminist science studies and medical anthropology background. The discourse of normal' menstruation and representations of menstruation in the promotional materials for NovaSure (R) are explored through a textual analysis of the NovaSure (R) website and patient brochure. The themes in the materials analyzed include the idea of getting back to life, normal' bleeding, and having a choice among different medical procedures and interventions. The possibility of getting rid of embarrassment that accompanies heavy bleeding is also emphasized. It will be argued that NovaSure (R) contributes to the redefinition of what is natural' and necessary' by combining the unnecessary period' idea of pills such as Seasonale (R), which is aimed toward women in their reproductive years, with the unnecessary suffering' idea related to menopausal complaints. While advertising the procedure, NovaSure (R) promotional materials co-construct the ideal user for the technology and reproduce the taboos and embarrassment that accompany menstruation.Yayın The moderating role of environmental munificence on innovativeness in B2B markets(Emerald Group Publishing Limited, 2019-09-30) Gül, Mısra ÇağlaPurpose: The purpose of this paper is to understand the relationship between two business orientations, namely, entrepreneurial orientation and market orientation, and innovativeness taking into account the moderating influence of environmental munificence. Design/methodology/approach: This is a multiple respondent quantitative study. A total of 312 marketing managers middle level and above from 79 firms participated in the survey. Multiple regression and hierarchical multiple regression was the method of choice for data analysis. Findings: Findings indicate that environmental munificence moderates the entrepreneurial orientation – innovativeness relationship. Findings reveal that even though a significant impact of entrepreneurial orientation is not present on innovativeness, this insignificance may be due to environmental munificence. Market orientation has a direct positive impact on innovativeness, and environmental munificence negatively moderates this relationship suggesting that when the environment is less munificent, the market orientation – innovation link becomes stronger. Practical implications: Managers should be aware that the more munificent an environment becomes, having an entrepreneurial orientation will be more important for innovativeness. In addition, results of this study suggest that being market oriented more strongly impacts a firm’s ability to innovate in non-munificent environments where growth opportunities are undesirable. Originality/value: This study is unique in that it is a multi-respondent study with respondents from different layers of each participating organization, incorporating the moderating impact of the business environment’s munificence on business orientations–innovativeness relationship.Yayın Assortment optimization with log-linear demand: application at a Turkish grocery store(Elsevier Ltd, 2019-09) Hekimoğlu, Mustafa; Sevim, İsmail; Aksezer, Sezgin Çağlar; Durmuş, İpekIn retail sector, product variety increases faster than shelf spaces of retail stores where goods are presented to consumers. Hence, assortment planning is an important task for sustained financial success of a retailer in a competitive business environment. In this study, we consider the assortment planning problem of a retailer in Turkey. Using empirical point-of-sale data, a demand model is developed and utilized in the optimization model. Due to nonlinear nature of the model and integrality constraint, we find that it is difficult to obtain a solution even for moderately large product sets. We propose a greedy heuristic approach that generates better results than the mixed integer nonlinear programming in a reasonably shorter period of time for medium and large problem sizes. We also proved that our method has a worst-case time complexity of O(n 2 )while other two well-known heuristics’ complexities are O(n 3 )and O(n 4 ). Also numerical experiments reveal that our method has a better performance than the worst-case as it generates better results in a much shorter run-times compared to other methods.Yayın The relationship between a mother's attitude toward domestic violence and children's schooling outcomes in Turkey(Sage Publications Inc, 2014-09) Rende, SevinçThis study explores the relationship between a mother's attitude toward domestic violence and her children's schooling outcomes in Turkey. The sample is drawn from the 2003 Turkish Demographic and Health Survey and consists of 7,951 children within the ages of legally mandated compulsory education. A probit regression model is used to analyze the data. The results suggest that the daughters of mothers who find domestic violence acceptable are 2.6 percentage point less likely to enroll in school, all else being equal, than the daughters of mothers who do not tolerate abuse. In comparison, the schooling outcomes of male children are not statistically sensitive to the mother's attitude toward wife beating. The policy implications of the results are discussed.Yayın The cerebral blood flow deficits in Parkinson’s disease with mild cognitive impairment using arterial spin labeling MRI(Springer, 2020-09) Arslan, Dilek Betül; Gürvit, İbrahim Hakan; Genç, Ozan; Kıçik, Ani; Eryürek, Kardelen; Cengiz, Sevim; Erdoğdu, Emel; Yıldırım, Zerrin; Tüfekçioğlu, Zeynep; Uluğ, Aziz Müfit; Bilgiç, Başar; Hanağası, Haşmet Ayhan; Tüzün, Erdem; Demiralp, Tamer; Öztürk Işık, EsinParkinson's disease (PD) with mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI) is currently diagnosed based on an arbitrarily predefined standard deviation of neuropsychological test scores, and more objective biomarkers for PD-MCI diagnosis are needed. The purpose of this study was to define possible brain perfusion-based biomarkers of not only mild cognitive impairment, but also risky gene carriers in PD using arterial spin labeling magnetic resonance imaging (ASL-MRI). Fifteen healthy controls (HC), 26 cognitively normal PD (PD-CN), and 27 PD-MCI subjects participated in this study. ASL-MRI data were acquired by signal targeting with alternating radio-frequency labeling with Look-Locker sequence at 3 T. Single nucleotide polymorphism genotyping for rs9468 [microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT) H1/H1 versus H1/H2 haplotype] was performed using a Stratagene Mx3005p real-time polymerase chain-reaction system (Agilent Technologies, USA). There were 15 subjects withMAPTH1/H1 and 11 subjects withMAPTH1/H2 within PD-MCI, and 33 subjects withMAPTH1/H1 and 19 subjects withMAPTH1/H2 within all PD. Voxel-wise differences of cerebral blood flow (CBF) values between HC, PD-CN and PD-MCI were assessed by one-way analysis of variance followed by pairwise post hoc comparisons. Further, the subgroup of PD patients carrying the riskyMAPTH1/H1 haplotype was compared with noncarriers (MAPTH1/H2 haplotype) in terms of CBF by a two-samplettest. A pattern that could be summarized as "posterior hypoperfusion" (PH) differentiated the PD-MCI group from the HC group with an accuracy of 92.6% (sensitivity = 93%, specificity = 93%). Additionally, the PD patients withMAPTH1/H1 haplotype had decreased perfusion than the ones with H1/H2 haplotype at the posterior areas of the visual network (VN), default mode network (DMN), and dorsal attention network (DAN). The PH-type pattern in ASL-MRI could be employed as a biomarker of both current cognitive impairment and future cognitive decline in PD.Yayın Pros and cons of using building information modeling in the AEC industry(ASCE-AMER Soc Civil Engineers, 2019-08-01) Seyis Kazazoğlu, SenemAlthough a plethora of studies on building information modeling (BIM) have been conducted in the last decade, none of the previous studies collate and/or prioritize the benefits, risks, and challenges of BIM based on the data collected from a comprehensive literature review and subject matter experts (SMEs). In order to allow architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) professionals and academics see the true potential of BIM in a wider context and help them understand its multiorganizational and multidisciplinary functions, there is an obvious necessity for identifying, classifying, and prioritizing the pros and cons of BIM; however, such a study is still currently absent in the AEC literature. The aim of this study is to identify, classify, and rank the pros and cons of BIM that address the benefits, challenges, and risks of BIM in the transition from computer-aided design (CAD). A literature review was performed and face-to-face semistructured interviews with SMEs on BIM were conducted for identification and classification purposes. A total of 41 types of benefits, 11 types of risks, and 13 types of challenges of BIM were identified via triangulation of literature review and face-to-face semistructured interviews with SMEs. The Delphi method was performed for prioritizing the benefits of BIM in terms of time, cost, and sustainability as well as the risks and challenges of BIM encountered in the transition process from CAD to BIM. The interrater agreement and significance-level statistics were performed to analyze and validate the consensus reached by the Delphi panel experts. This paper contributes to the existing body of knowledge on BIM by providing comprehensive identification and classification of the benefits, challenges, and risks of BIM, and prioritization of the benefits for BIM in terms of time, cost, and sustainability as well as the risks and challenges of BIM. The priority rankings of benefits, risks, and challenges of BIM ensure successful completion of projects and create additional value by allowing professionals to make well-informed decisions that support decreasing time and cost-related waste in the transition process from CAD to BIM.
