Yayın Phased subarray imaging for low-cost, wideband coherent array imaging(IEEE, 2003) Johnson, Jeremy A.; Oralkan, Ömer; Ergün, Arif Sanlı; Demirci, Utkan; Karaman, Mustafa; Khuri-Yakub, Butrus ThomasThe front-end hardware complexity of conventional full phased array (FPA) imaging is proportional to the number of array elements. Phased subarray (PSA) imaging has been proposed as a method of reducing the hardware complexity-and therefore system cost and size-while achieving near-FPA image quality. A new method is presented for designing the subarray-dependent interpolation filters suitable for wideband PSA imaging. The method was tested experimentally using pulse-echo data of a wire target phantom acquired using a 3.2-cm. 128-element capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (CMUT) array with 85% fractional bandwidth at 3 MHz. A specific PSA configuration using seven 32-element subarrays was compared to FPA imaging, representing a 4-fold reduction in front-end hardware complexity and a 43% decrease in frame rate. For targets near the fixed transmit focal distance, the mean 6-dB lateral resolution was identical to that of FPA, the axial resolution improved by 4%, and the SNR decreased by 5 dB. Measurements were repeated for 10 different PSA configurations with subarray sizes ranging from 4 to 60. The lateral and axial resolutions did not vary significantly with subarray size; both the SNR and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) improved with increased subarray size.Yayın Design of optimum nyquist signals based on generalized sampling theory for data communications(IEEE, Piscataway, NJ, United States, 1999-06) Panayırcı, Erdal; Özuğur, Timuçin; Çağlar, HakanA new method is given for the optimal design of bandlimited Nyquist-type signal shapes for data communications, which maximizes its energy in a given time interval. The method is based on the periodically nonuniform sampling (PNS) theory making use of the linear splines. The computation is straightforward, and the constraint for intersymbol interferrence is shown to be easy to include in the problem. A numerical example is given, and performance of the optimal signal shapes is compared with that resulting from the use of previously obtained signal shapes in the literature. It is also concluded that the optimal signal shapes thus obtained are almost immune to small offsets at the sampling instants.Yayın A priority based packet scheduler with deadline considerations(IEEE Computer Soc, 2006) Dağ, Tamer; Gökgöl, OralQoS issues have become a focal point of research on Next Generation Networks (NGNs). In order to supply the various QoS requirement for different kinds of applications, new scheduling policies need to be developed and evaluated. This paper introduces a new kind of packet scheduler which tries to integrate an important QoS parameter (the delay) with the classical schedulers. The two sets of algorithms introduced; Static Priority with Deadline Considerations (SPD) and Dynamic Priority with Deadline Considerations (DPD); not only simplify the complexity and overhead of a classical Earliest Deadline First (EDF) or Static Priority (SP) algorithm, but also provide a better QoS based on the results of the simulations conducted.Yayın Inductor saturation compensation in three-phase three-wire voltage-source converters via inverse system dynamics(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2022-05-01) Özkan, Ziya; Hava, Ahmet MasumIn three-phase three-wire (3P3W) voltage-source converter (VSC) systems, utilization of filter inductors with deep saturation characteristics is often advantageous due to the improved size, cost, and efficiency. However, with the use of conventional synchronous frame current control methods, the inductor saturation results in significant dynamic performance loss and poor steady-state current waveform quality. This article proposes an inverse dynamic model-based compensation (IDMBC) method to overcome these performance issues. For this purpose, two-phase exact modeling of the 3P3W VSC control system is obtained. Based on the modeling, the inverse system dynamic model of the nonlinear system is obtained and employed such that the nonlinear plant is converted to a virtual linear inductor system for linear current regulators to perform satisfactorily. Further, to control phase currents in the synchronous frame, a two-phase coordinate transformation is proposed. The IDMBC method is tested via dynamic command response and waveform quality simulations and experiments that employ saturable inductors reaching down from full inductance at zero current to 1/9th inductance at full current. The results obtained demonstrate the suitability of the method for 3P3W VSCs employing saturable inductors.Yayın Parçacık süzgeçleme ile hedef izleme uygulamasında topak çizelgeleme(IEEE, 2007) Özfidan, Özgür; Bayazıt, Uluğ; Çırpan, Hakan AliBu çalışmada, uzaklık ölçer algılayıcılarla hedef takibi uygulamasında algılayıcı çizelgeleme problemi ele alınmıştır. Due to the use of multiple Macroblock (MB) partitions, the Motion estimation module has extremely high complexity that makes it unpractical for most real-time applications on resource-limited platforms such as hand held devices. In this paper we propose a novel algorithm that significantly reduces the encoding complexity while maintaining high rate distortion performance. The proposed method reduces the Motion estimation (ME) computational complexity by accurately predicting the optimal MB partitions and restricting the number of candidate modes based on a-priori probabilities computed from spatio-temporal information. The experimental results show that the speed up of UmHexagonS [1] (one of the most efficient ME algorithms) can be doubled while maintaining the coding efficiency of Full Search.Yayın An Analog beamformer for integrated high-frequency medical ultrasound imaging(IEEE, 2011) Gürün, Gökçe; Zahorian, Jaime; Tekeş, Coşkun; Karaman, Mustafa; Hasler, Paul E.; Değertekin, Fahrettin LeventWe designed and fabricated a dynamic receive beamforming integrated circuit (IC) in 0.35-mu m CMOS technology. This beamformer is suitable for integration with an ultrasound annular array for high-frequency (30-50 MHz) intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) imaging. The beamformer IC is capable of buffering, delaying and preamplification for 8 receive channels. We explored an analog delay cell based on a currentmode first-order all-pass filter, which is used as the basic building block to form an analog dynamic delay line. We also explored a bandwidth enhancement method on the delay cell that improved the overall bandwidth of the delay line by a factor of 6. Each delay cell consumes 2.1 mW of power and is capable of generating a tunable delay between 1.75 ns to 2.5 ns, enabling dynamic receive beamforming over a focal range from 1.4 mm to 2 mm. We successfully integrated the fabricated beamformer IC with an 8-element annular array. Our experimental test results demonstrated the desired buffering, preamplification and delaying capabilities of the beamformer.Yayın Iterative channel estimation approach for space-time/frequency coded OFDM systems with transmitter diversity(Assoc Elettrotecnica Ed Elettronica Italiana, 2004-06) Çırpan, Hakan Ali; Panayırcı, Erdal; Doğan, HakanFocusing on transmit diversity orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission through frequency selective channels, this paper pursues novel iterative channel estimation approaches for both space-frequency OFDM (SF-OFDM) and space-time OFDM (ST-OFDM) systems. Relying on the unifying signal model for SF-OFDM and ST-OFDM transmitter diversity systems, we develop computationally efficient, maximum a posteriori (MAP) channel estimation algorithms according to the MAP criterion. The algorithms require a convenient representation of the discrete multipath fading channel based on the Karhunen-Loeve (KL) orthogonal expansion and estimates the complex channel parameters of each subcarriers iteratively using the expectation-maximisation (EM) method. In order to explore the performance, the closed-form expression for the average symbol error rate (SER) probability is derived for the maximum ratio combiner (MRC). Furthermore, to benchmark performance of the MAP channel estimator, the modified Cramer-Rao bound of channel estimates is also derived. Finally, we provide simulation results studying the influence of delay spread, propagation parameters and modelling mismatch on the performance of channel estimation techniques. Simulation results confirm our theoretical analysis and illustrate that the proposed algorithms are capable of tracking fast fading and improving overall performance.Yayın Forward-viewing CMUT arrays for medical Imaging(IEEE-INST Electrical Electronics Engineers Inc, 2004-07) Demirci, Utkan; Ergün, Arif Sanlı; Oralkan, Ömer; Karaman, Mustafa; Khuri-Yakub, Butrus ThomasThis paper reports the design and testing of forward-viewing annular arrays fabricated using capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (CMUT) technology. Recent research studies have shown that CMUTs have broad frequency bandwidth and high-transduction efficiency. One- and two-dimensional CMUT arrays of various sizes already have been fabricated, and their viability for medical imaging applications has been demonstrated. We fabricated 64-element, forward-viewing annular arrays using the standard CMUT fabrication process and carried out experiments to measure the operating frequency, bandwidth, and transmit/receive efficiency of the array elements. The annular array elements, designed for imaging applications in the 20 MHz range, had a resonance frequency of 13.5 MHz in air. The immersion pulse-echo data collected from a plane reflector showed that the devices operate in the 5-26 MHz range with a fractional bandwidth of 135%. The output pressure at the surface of the transducer was measured to be 24 kPa/V. These values translate into a dynamic range of 131.5 dB for I-V excitation in 1-Hz bandwidth with a commercial low noise receiving circuitry. The designed, forward-viewing annular CMUT array is suitable for mounting on the front surface of a cylindrical catheter probe and can provide Doppler information for measurement of blood flow and guiding information for navigation through blood vessels in intravascular ultrasound imaging.Yayın Cluster based sensor scheduling in a target tracking application with particle filtering(IEEE, 2007) Özfidan, Özgür; Bayazıt, Uluğ; Çırpan, Hakan AliIn multi-sensor applications management of sensors is necessary for the classification of data they produce and for the efficient use of sensors as well. One of the important aspects in sensor management is the sensor scheduling. By scheduling the sensors, serious reductions can be achieved in the cost of bandwidth, power, and computation. In this work a simple solution for the problem of sensor scheduling in a multi-sensor target tracking application is presented. Due to non-linearity of the problem itself, proposed solution is presented in the framework of non-linear Bayesian estimation.
